Three and Nine is, literally, three shillings and nine pennies - the price of the cheap seats in a cinema in the fifities, Ferry's childhood years. This is 'no cheap nostalgia' but as it really was. He lists various movie novelties ( 'now and then 3D') But change ( a pun - change is money ) is here to stay with the coming in the early seventies of decimal currency to Britain. Prices have also risen, 45 pence being nine shillings. 'Six and two threes now' ... that is, six of one, half a dozen of the other. I don't think the lovey-dovey bits need clarification. What do people do in the back rows of cinemas?? Hope this helps. Yes. The Associates were a very fine band in the early 80's, fronted by one Billy Mackenzie who crooned like the Maestro but, how shall I put it, would not have struggled with the high notes on More Than This. The Associates were most famous for the singles "Party Fears *2" and the aforementioned "Waiting for the loveboat" - the cover of which had Billy cast in US Navy Officers uniform on some faraway beach gazing into the sunset. Hence my styling. Billy was very "out" about his adoration of Bryan but not so candid about his sexuality. As Billy Bragg famously says (paraphrasing Mott The Hoople) "Its a mighty long way from Top Of The Pops to a lfe on the dole," and somewhere along the line dear Billy Mackenzie lost interest in this vale of tears, and last year committed suicide in his mother's garden shed. Perhaps his loveboat never came in. Perhaps Rexy's right and our decadent European Welfare State is to blame. Perhaps if Billy's Glasgow had had America's trailer parks and shopping malls he could have seen a point to it all. Perhaps. I guess Rex is waking up to enough bad press. How about a duel ? An heroic scar would sit prettily upon my cheekbones. In '87, some music critic suggested that though there were several artists who might have considered calling a new album Bete Noire, only Bryan Ferry would have bothered with the circumflex. Lee Elliott, a much-missed contributor to this list, once pointed out that Bryan's photograph on Bete Noire's back cover was carefully put together using photos of Egyptian treasures and works of art, many of which are clearly identifiable; the identities of these goddesses and the like are almost certainly significant. Perhaps only Bryan knows the whole story. There almost certainly *is* a story - detail, detail, detail... and yet, in interviews, Bryan just said that he was fed up with the idea of yet another "head down, look up, cigarette in hand" photograph, so cut up his photo, painted the album's lettering in Tippex and was done with it. Speaking of images, do you see on the front cover the subject alluded to in the album's title song? Glance at the shadow cast by Bryan's hand (sans cigarette) upon his face: the outline on this Alistair Thain photograph bears a remarkable similarity to that of the creature Angel mentioned recently, featured on the Bete Noire tour, albeit in a somewhat different pose. Its legs and rump are the shadow of Bryan's forefinger, its belly and torso the shade along the side of his nose; one of its arms is raised across Bryan's forehead while the other wraps around his left eye.
