Well Heather I can help you on a couple of accounts. Back in July 1982 I was sharing an appartment with a music journalist called Tim. The previous winter he'd been out of work and had taken on a Christmas Mail Delivery job as a temporary measure to keep the wolves from the door. His co-worker at the Post Office turned out to be Chris Jagger, brother of Avalon effigy Mick, and husband to .....none other than Kari-Ann Mueller (the delightful pin-up from the first Roxy album.) Now you're probably wondering "what's the brother of one of Britain's wealthiest men doing trudging the icy streets of Camden Town delivering Christmas cards ?" And I do not know the answer except to say that there has been some record of sibling rivalry in the press. This tale also contains an irony in the context of a later Roxy cover girl's defection to a Jagger. But back to my story. The following summer Tim and I decide to hold a Saturday night party with a "Naval" theme, and I was thrilled that Tim has invited Kari-Ann along with Chris. The night before the party we were hanging around the flat working on our outfits - for the record I was styling myself on the 12" single sleeve of The Associates' "Waiting For The Loveboat" - and there's a ring on the door. I am ironing my tunic standing in my pink sea-island cotton boxer shorts as Kari-Anne and Chris enter the room. They had come the wrong night. I stood there aghast. My adolescent dream-girl was now in my dreamhome, and all I could offer her was some unchilled cheap white wine and some pickled onions. She was wearing something fairly new romantic with a sash - not unlike our dear Kicki's website - and I still shudder at the recollection of her disdainful fairwell, saying they were unavailable the following night. At least the following did turn up to the party : Dave Stewart, Clem Burke (Blondie drummer) and a couple of guys from Madness. A year later I had moved into a flat in Hampstead above the Maclean twins, Sue and Jenny, the girls who play the harp at the beginning of the Angel Eyes video. I think they are credited as appearing amongst the mannequins on the Manifesto shoot. They were a pair of wild-childs. I once knocked on their flat at dawn to get them to quit their party. "Its f***ing 5 o'clock girls !" "Is that morning or evening ?" Jenny genuinely wanted to know. Sue went out with Bryan for a few months and I recall a lovely sepia-tinged photo of them having a drink in a smoky country pub somwhere in Northumbria. Ferry was wearing a flat cap and looked like a crusty old sheep-farmer. Aah. Tous ces moments perdus dan l'enchantement. If there are copyright problems to overcome - something which an official site would have to take seriously - then a list would be useful so that collectors can look for them (even a list of 'current' features would help ensure no-one misses anything new - this is something I have seen done successfully on the sites for other artistes. It aired in the mid to late 80s, while DJs and critics were itching for another youth music revolution to finally kill off Genesis and other survivors of the last attempt. In it, someone - Simon Puxley, perhap - described how, during Roxy's very early days, Ferry asked to be followed & observed at a distance while walking through the streets of a town before and after having played a Roxy gig to learn how many more people recognised him after the event. PR & Marketing efficacy check? It was Jack Fairy's long walk through town that brought it to mind - schoolkids looking at each other, astonished: "That's Jack Fairy!" Mary Ann Hobbs (sp?), a Radio 1 DJ who presented a heavy metal show on Sunday evenings a few years ago, used to insist on disdainfully starting her programme with "that was part of the Bryan *Fairy* Story" each time her show followed one of the Ferry installments. Perhaps tapes made their way to Todd Haynes? It seems that DVDs labeled as "Code 2" will not play on American systems unless they are "all code" systems (about $650). I came across some Japanese Code 2 DVDs called, "Rock N Roll`s Greatest Years". The 1972 volume has Roxy doing Virginia Plain and volume 1975 has Love Is The Drug and Both Ends Burning, '73 wasn`t listed. $30 each. Chris, I find this Wetton thing interesting. Perhaps we should start a sweepstake...the line up of the next Roxy Music. I'll start with the following speculation: BF AM PM Eno Wetton That Simple Minds drummer NOT Rolf Harris And of course, Eno won't tour. Robert PS With your contacts Chris, can you get us a copy of the members' new contracts? I wouldn't be surprised... If you can get a copy of Resolving Contradictions die for it. Its Andy Mackay at his best after the Rock Follies exploit. It is inspired by China and communist scenarios and contains sax work to reflect on. I always listen in the dark with a large whiskey. It was listed again some time ago but by the time I applied it was gone again . My lp version is now worn out to the bone. Thanks for the list. Soem great stuff on it. Pip pip Chris M P.S. In the 50s (and probably the 60s) many officially designated new towns were built throughout Britain. They were often founded on or near existing villages and towns, and were intended to attract new, modern light industry, usually in areas where old heavy industries were being run down. Typically, you'd see them in places where coal mining, docks, or steel manufacturing jobs had been lost and would continue to be over the next few decades. I grew up (in a manner of speaking) in one of these towns. A weeping willow stood in my parents' garden, and the pedestrian town centre, with its free parking and one-way streets was a typical new town concrete jungle. These place, in spite of or because of their modern approach, lacked soul and character. See one and you've pretty much seen them all. To be fair, many aren't as bad as they used to be. Present among the list of places that received this treatment is Washington (made a new town in 1964). It's the place from which George Washington's family came, and it's Bryan Ferry's birthplace - one of the new towns I haven't visited. But I think I know it already.
