He has played on more records with Bryan than Phil has though this does not underestimate Mr. Manzanera's contribution to these shiny silver discs that have become the soundtracks to our lives. Bryan's music has several periods and sounds which are very diverse and you have to have a wide taste in music to like all of his work. (I think this is part of the reason he is no longer as big as someone like Elton John, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits etc, who all play safe and strait down the middle, ie. you know what to expect, a victim of his own success.) Niel Hubbard is an essential part to the airbrush glossy sound. When I knew Bryan had a new record coming out, and I hadn't heard it yet, I listened to the radio as much as possible with a cassette ready to record the forthcoming release. I knew right away it was Bryan's record during the intro before Bryan's voice came in because of Niel Hubbard's playing .That's what he is on the last few albums "the Bryan Ferry sound" without a hint of Bryan yet. Niel plays 2 or 3 notes here and there, like the punctuation in Bryan's lyrics, he fills those gaps beautifully, his playing is the quintessential later period Bryan Ferry, "smooth and seductive". If you look at the credits, the drummer is Rick Marotta. The only other place he turns up is playing 80% of "The Bride Stripped Bare", which, as we know, had several songs left over to be used in later years. (Crazy Love, Feel The Need, Broken Wings, He'll Have To Go) These four songs differ from To Turn You On in that they had the "Bride" producers, so I think that when Jealous Guy, an unplanned single came into the schedule, they needed a B-side quick, and this was probably the nearest to a finished product they had at the time and Rhett Davies got involved in the finishing touches and produced it. Is this all an educated guess, or is someone going to put this one to bed for me at long last with the facts.????????? Can only add that I enjoyed the contrast between his playing and Manzanera's on Roxy's last few albums. You mention Always Unknowing - the perfect example. Phil's bold, confident sweeps and Neil's finer touch. Have always assumed that it's Neil's minimalist solo on Zamba, too - can you confirm? Totally wonderful, whoever it is - the most parts being those he had the willpower to omit. And his solo on New Town, too - quite the opposite. Heard Manzanera's work on Robert Wyatt's Shleep album of last year? Phil seems to get better and better. Like Bryan Ferry's singing, there's something *odd* about his playing that makes it individual and expressive. Eno produced two of the Robert Wyatt tracks, the first of which is a real corker. A good album. (To Han - I too loved the novel Perfume, by Suskind. I read it in the English translation but it still worked its magic.) Second of all, yes, I have 4 tatoos...3 are visible to everyone: I had my lips done, you know, permanant make-up... in Red, of course, and I had my eyebrows filled in....that's 3. And the third one is on my bum, it is a cherub....really beautiful. The cool thing about this tatoo is, is that I traded dental work with this tatoo artist in the Haight who needed fillings but could not afford them. So she did the artwork, and I did her teeth. This may be TMI (too much info) for some of our readers, but hey, what the Hell, 'Let's get to KNOW each other, Avalonians!' The same way a Sony Superbeta HiFi will copy most copyguarded VHS videotapes So there's just another one of the MANY ways Beta is FAR SUPERIOR to VHS, it's just too bad the masses fell for the bullshit propaganda that VHS came up with to become the dominent video medium. Good to hear this. I still have my Hi-Fi Sony Betamax that I bought in 1984. Yes it was/ still is superior to VHS. In fact I taped Bryan's apperance on Saturday Night Live years ago on it. My problem is that it is harder than hell to get parts for it. My local Sony Dealer can't fix it because they no longer make the parts. They told me to seek smaller independents who might be able to service it. Not an easy thing to do. I am currently taking review classes so I can become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). I will sit for the exam in May 1999. If anyone of you is familiar with Accountants or know someone who has taken this test, knows how intense it is (pray for me!). I am seeking a better professional life and more money so I can more Roxy/Bryan related things (like the best concert seats when Roxy regroups). My dream is to become a band manager. I won't be just another "shirt". As somewhat of a musician myself (guitar, bass), I have sensitivity to the creative process. I want to be the type of manager who genuinely helps artists by giving sound advice but stepping out of the way when the muse(s) or "sirens" hits. I have heard of one too many managers take advantage/screw their clients(Colonel Tom Parker comes to mind) when they were not looking. I hope to be completely different. Hi; It's pretty common knowledge that I'm a sucker for this kind of thing. Usually I'm so far behind w/my email, that I don't bother posting, but since this is only a FEW days old, I'll jump in. I completely with Bahi (who, apparently, has impeccable taste) on the PJ Harvey and the Mercury Rev. Ditto (ALWAYS!!) on John Cale. Here's what I've found interesting that is relatively new. A lot of it really hasn't much to do stylistically with Roxy, so I won't give any blanket recommendations, but this stuff has been making my good days better and my bad days tolerable. The Boo Radleys-"Kingsize"-This is brand new, so I'm still forming my opinion, but all their other albums really grew on me and this one is doing the same with a vengance. Smart, studio-oriented Britpop with a taste for experimentation. Clever arrangements and a gorgeous pop sensibility with a great ear for killer hooks. Echoes of their predecessors from the Beatles to XTC abound, but they have their own energetic sound. Portishead-"Roseland NYC Live"-I had them pegged as primarily a studio act, so I was real surprised when they put out one of the best live recordings in recent memory, and may have in fact surpassed their (excellent) studio output. Beth Gibbons sings torch songs for the clinically depressed (Sometimes I think that if she didn't have this outlet, she would make a great stalker!), and Geoff Barrows brilliant work on the decks (turntables) cannot be overrated. Excellent integration of the string and wind instruments heighten the (melo)drama. Scarnella-"Scarnella"-Carla Bozulich and Nels Cline of the Geraldine Fibbers with a more experimental side project. Cline has worked his way "backwards" from being an accomplished jazz guitarist to a noisier Sonic Youth-influenced approach which is nothing short of stunning. Here, Cline is in excellent form, and vocalist Bozulich is always at least compelling, and sometimes much, much more. Some straightforward songs, some sprawling instrumental improvisations and some stuff that straddles the line between the 2. NOT an easy pop fix. Talvin Singh-"OK"-Tablatronics. Singh adds his own excellent tabla playing to the usual busy drum programs of Drum & Bass and then works in a lot of classy world class world musicians. D&B purists may be bothered by the approach (I've read a couple reviews which implied as much), but fans of world music fusion, such as that practiced by the likes of Bill Laswell (who makes an appearance) or Michael Brook, might find much to like. John Zorn-"The Circle Maker"-2 cds, 1 w/the Masada string trio, 1 w/the trio augmented by drums, percussion and my favorite guitarist of late, Marc Ribot. It's all great, but I am especially fond of disc 2, where Ribot achieves Hebrew spaghetti western transcendence. (This material is all written using distinctly Jewish scales and themes, being a "chamber"-style companion to Zorn's Masada project.) Those who are familiar only with Zorn's reputation for noisy jazz-influenced cut and paste, will likely be surprised by the beauty and delicacy of the playing contained herein. (Sax-man Zorn does not actually play on this, but is rather the composer and producer.) The Church-"Hologram of Baal"-One of the best things they have done in a long time. IMHO, There is something special about a great 2 guitar/bass/drums band (Television, '80's King Crimson to name 2 favorites) and the Church have it down cold. I love Steve Kilbey's vocals and lyrics and the way they orchestrate the guitar work is brilliant. Hypnotic. Various Artists-"Ocean of Sound"-It's been out a couple of years, but I just picked this up. It's a 2 disc companion to British electronic composer David Toop's book of the same name. He has some definite points to make about the nature and relationships of music and sound, and does it here with some brilliant juxtapositions. The Velvet Underground ("I Heard Her Call My Name") into a recording of bearded seals into Holger Czukay (Can) into the Beach Boys into African Headcharge into Sun Ra, just for one example. Truly incredible. Eno, Herbie Hancock, Debussy, Aphex Twin, Miles Davis, My Bloody Valentine, Jon Hassell, Harold Budd, John Cage, Erik Satie, rainforest shamen and howler monkeys, all flowing, one into another. Now I've GOT to get ahold of a copy of the book. And a few reissue box sets; Miles Davis-"The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions"-One of my all time favorite albums gets the deluxe re-master/re-issue treatment in a lavish package with a substantial amount of previously unreleased material. A bit on the pricey side, but for me that was a non-issue. Personally, it was one of those pivotal albums that changed the way I listened to music and challenged all my preconceptions about what could and couldn't (or should and shouldn't) be done with music. (Kind of like the first couple Roxy albums did!) "Nuggets"-4 CDs of classic mid-'60's psychedelic garage band punk. Ranges from several well known acts of the time (Electric Prunes, etc.) to a mess of unknown and little known regional one-hit wonders. Lots of attitude, combo organs, fuzzed-out guitars and occasional pharmaceutical damage. It's also fun to play "spot the occasional musician who went on to have an actual career in the music industry". AND the Beach Boys-"Pet Sounds Sessions Box"-"God Only Knows" may well be the most sublime piece of music in the latter half of the 20th century (followed closely by the recently mentioned "To Turn You On", not to stray on-topic too much), but most of the rest of this isn't far behind. I find all the studio outtakes fascinating and the stereo and alternate versions are great. How is a 4 disc set out of an album that probably clocks in well under 40 min for maximizing your effort? Enough of that. If you made it this far it should be obvious that all of the above is massively IMHO-specific. Back to lurking and reading my email in a relatively untimely fashion (too many lists!!) Be Well.
