No Roxy sightings but I met Eno about 3 years ago. My brother spotted Brian among our fellow punters on the last day of an art exhibition called Self Storage. Brian and Laurie Anderson had organised it in a half-empty storage warehouse in Wembley and made it a showcase for lots of students' work; they included some of their own pieces, too. It was in one of those place you'd use to store your stuff between house moves or whatever. Lots of murky-looking, locked cubicles among the exhibition space. They turned it into a little wonderland. One of the highlights was a mock-up (I hope that's what it was) of a teenager's messy bedroom. His diary, record collection, answerphone messages, desk drawers, books - everything was fair game and few of us could resist rummaging through the lot. It was one of the most popular exhibits. We spotted Brian with his wife and two daughters. He was taking them around the exhibits. We spoke only for a few minutes after leaving the exhibition hall - he was very forthright and intense and talked about the the high points of the exhibition, things that could have been done better, what he was trying to achieve, his hatred of the way people were misusing technology and probably some other stuff. No spin, no attitude - just a very intelligent and driven sort of bloke. He seemed to show no displeasure whatsoever at having been recognised, either. Autographed my BR timetable with a flourish. A slightly more surreal encounter of the Roxy kind involved a long telephone call to Phil Manzanera a few years ago to tell him about a cousin of his - Columbian, I think - who was desperate to get in touch. It all came about through this list, so the wrinklies among us (time passes *much* faster in cyberspace) might remember it. The Columbian (E & OE) Manzanera spotted my name next to a magazine interview I had typed up and posted. Bryan Chow has asked whether he could publish it on his site - no objection on my part. The article's author was fully credited but nevertheless, Manzanera Junior mistakenly assumed that I'd written the article and was a friend of his famous cousin. Senor Manzanera senior coped very well with our unexpected conversation when we spoke. He was amazed to hear about this list ("Extraordinary!") and sounded pleased to get in touch with his lost cousin, whose identity he verified via a series of deaths and marriages that Junior had e-mailed and which Phil knew of. Truly, life is stranger than fiction. I like to think that Phil puts on his fly-eye sunglasses before he picks up the phone... But then again, there's only one Phil Manzanera....mind you, Fripp would always be woth a jam. The same way a Sony Superbeta HiFi will copy most copyguarded VHS videotapes (the copyguard comes back if you try and dump it back to VHS) it will also copy DVD material. So there's just another one of the MANY ways Beta is FAR SUPERIOR to VHS, it's just too bad the masses fell for the bullshit propaganda that VHS came up with to become the dominent video medium. Which was unfortunately as simple as "you can get 6 hours of video on a VHS and only 4.5 hours on beta" I guess it should have been said "You can get 3 hours of superior quality vid on beta and only 2 hours of fine looking video on VHS, but if you don't care about video quality you could get 6 full hours of nearly unwatchable video quality in the extended play mode compared to only 4.5 hours of still good quality video on a beta in extended play mode". A real F***ing shame for most of you. I however held onto 2 really fine beta decks (one with digital effects even) and have hundreds of high quality beta dubs. My version of The High Road is even on beta. I actually bought 120 used beta tapes from a local thrift store a couple of months ago in excellent condition for $60. I was ready to pay a buck apiece but seeing as I bought all they had (3 large boxes) they low balled me. Actually what really excites me is whoever it was posting that the Fear and Loathing DVD has 10 or 15 minutes of extra scenes in it. I'm renting the player ($10 for 4 days with 2 free DVDs) and I'm going to make such a copy of it. My other choice for the free rental...Austin Powers of course. He plays the beautifully sparse solos at the end of "More Than This" and "Slave to Love", at least I think he does. He can definitely be heard as the only guitarist on "To Turn You On", the only Roxy song I know of that had NONE of the original members on it. "This time, Adam and the Ants(by now including ex-Vibrator/Roxy Music bassist Gary Tibbs) took top honors in both 'Smash Hits' categories." Woo-Hoo... they pop up everywhere. I just had to share. No wonder I like the group. But then, it's the dark haired Englishman theory. - --alegna - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Jan 1999 18:00:09 -0500 From: jspellman@banet.net Subject: Re: [AVALON] Roxy sightings Robert Fedder wrote: > >>Much though I "appreciate" how well Hubbard plays, I've never really felt he > was right on BF, and especially not RM, material. Would like to have seen Trower and Hubbard. Williams to me plays every song like it's Madonna or Michael Jackson. He did help create a new sound with the super chorused "chica chica" guitar solo on MJ's "Billie Jean", but this is not "fast food pop", it's Bryan Ferry and I thought Williams stepped all over Hubbard's subtle approach.
