I picked up an old copy of Q magazine (Jan.1988) at the weekend with a Ferry interview. This one shows a picture of the couple at the races in 1981. Also the interviewer mentioned thet both Bryan and Lucy were "gracious, considerate, and extremely amusing people". It also mentions that Lucy is very well balanced although as we all know she was to have a battle with the bottle a few years down the line. Also saw a picture of Lucy recently with bryan and she looks really quite attractive. I think they are still happy together (Anthony Price said only a few months ago that they were still very much in love), and certainly I'd rather her to Jerry Hall any day. The haunting feel of the original is brought to even more dramatic heights, Bryan's sadness tinged voice at it's very best. I certainly feel frustrated that he hasn't yet brought out an album of this sort. I also feel he'd be quite capable at the piano. As Robin Trower said it would not be Bryan Ferry without him on the piano. I've actually got a typed out version of that Radio 1 show at home. I must try to get it converted to e-mail so that you can all read it. The only bit I'm missing is where Andy Mackay speaks about Avalon over Tara. I think that those bands who were attracted to the glam scene did not just choose to become so. The seventies were super-ecctntric and everyone was wierd, like now, but these bands had some "extra wierdness," they were not just going along with the rest of the crowd to be cool. They were the artsy, the introverted, the sexually devient, etc. Which is not to say that other artists were not into experimental lifestyles, I jst think that glam rockers took themselves more seriously. And, as with any scene that occupies the fringes as glam rock did, the legacy of the movement stands out more brashly and vividly than other rock music. These glam musicians, with their cinematic, artsy leanings, influenced the art, fashion and literary world much much more than the average bell bottom, joint-smoking 70's band, a mon avis. They were just larger than life. The version I heard is the one Gareth later referred to from the Bryan Ferry story, a 3 part radio series. Since only a fragment of the song was included, I never listen to it from the tapes - I remember that on the radio programme, it was made to fade into the album version. The song came to life during that performance. I thought at the time that Bryan's phrasing (awful, jazz critic word but what's the alternative?) and a slightly better melody made the difference. Perhaps he was also repeating a line that he doesn't on the released recording or vice versa. I'd love to hear that vocal performance on top of the studio tracks. Thought it was the better vocal that did the trick, rather than the absence of other instruments.
