I`ve often considered celebrities doomed from the start in matters of love. I mean, how does one go about finding a mate that`s 100% attracted to them as a person rather than the celebrity they play for the public? I would think it`s almost impossible for people who pursue a relationship with a celebrity to completely separate the image they perceive from who they actually are. In a worse case scenario, I recall Ted Bundy receiving dozens of marriage proposals while sitting on death row. Anyway, there are some that do work out, however, I believe it`s the exception rather than the rule. It seems to me that when a relationship/marriage involves contracts, prenuptials etc., it`s as good as saying "I don`t trust you or this arrangement". It a set up for catastrophe, IMO. > Will Bryan be re-inspired to create more music by this course of events? I've been a Kate Bush fan for years too. Her fans have it even tougher that Ferry fans. She's even more reclusive (only one tour, ever), and she hasn't put out a record since around '93 or so. Her one tour was a big production, dancers and props, etc. She's said she wouldn't tour again unless she could put on a similar big production. She doesn't want to just front a band. I've thought it would be wonderful if she would do the opposite, a solo tour, just Kate and a piano. Expenses would be relatively low, and you know she'd pack 'em in. So what about Bryan? I think it would be stunning to see him alone on stage at the piano, a single spotlight. His earlier material could be easily adapted, and it would give him the chance to reinterpret his later material, perhaps bringing a new appreciation for it to those (like myself), who have always found the charms of "Boys and Girls" and "Bete Noir" elusive. The best show I ever saw was John Cale in the mid-80's, solo at a small club. "Heartbreak Hotel" that night was the singular most impassioned and intense musical moment I've experienced. 'suspended in gaffa' was a dream of mine ... and she still looks good! just wish she could refill her inkwell, creatively speaking. would be a great artiste for bry-bry to hook up with as well. forget gabriel! it's funny some should mention cars alongside bryan's choice of advertisements to lend his musical oeuvres to. i was just at the detroit auto show weekend before last and it was *quite* interesting. i would have figured bryan to do something different than 'blockbuster' as well. and, ford-owned or not, an aston martin (especially @ apx. $175K a piece) would have been something fun, no? though, i'm sure TV wouldn't exactly be the place for an aston. what about adult diapers?! at least _this_ nation's elderly population is quite high. think of the 'readies' rolling in with that kind of gig ... re: jerry hall ... i'd be surprised if bryan dumped his marriage now for her. there'd have to be some problems at home for that, no? i've never seen a picture of lucy, btw, is there at least one on the web somewhere? and now ... rush limbaugh and bryan ferry -- what's wrong with this picture? rush is a ferry fan?! why, this is an unfortunate turn of events, i'd say! unless, of course, bryan's got some royalties coming in from the 'big fat idiot's' show. Did anyone ever here the snippet of The Only Face on a BF interview - just him on piano and vocals? It sounded v haunting and better for my money than the album version. Why don't they make music like they did in the 80's anymore? Well, actually, some of the music today is pretty damned good. Here are some of my favorite new bands: Pulp Belle and Sebastian Blur Suede St. Etienne the Cardigans (yep, I like them too) Well, they're not THAT new, but they're newer than Roxy (bless their hearts). Indeed there are so many BF/RM songs that would go over well in a solo acoustic format...some examples IMHO: 2HB Sea Breezes Strictly Confidential (could be downright spine-chilling done solo) Beauty Queen A Song For Europe Mother Of Pearl All I Want Is You Bitter-sweet I would be interested in hearing some of the list members' picks for the proposed "Man and Piano" tour! Definitely. It made the studio recording sound wooden and worthless. Perhaps the demo will appear - together with all those extra Eno remixes of The 39 Steps - on the forthcoming Ferry box set. You like St. Etienne - have you tried Resurrection, the EP they did with Etienne Daho (as St Etienne Daho)? And Pizzicato Five are from the same planet... their standout song's James Bond vs. Twiggy - it's disposable and perfect. Have never heard a Cardigans album but love hearing the singles on the radio. Saw a Suede gig a while back - Brett was on such a Ferry trip. He talked Bowie but walked Ferry. The posture, the clothes, the hair, the microphone attitude. That guy has definitely been through a few copies of New Town. Surprisingly good live band, though. >Well, they're not THAT new, but they're newer than Roxy (bless their >hearts). What are some of yours? Here's what I'm currently pinning hopes on. Apologies in advance for the cluttered splurge. Polly Harvey: Is This Desire? (My favourite PJH album was Rid of You but this may top it - it's really something.) Mercury Rev's Songs for Deserters (*great* and getting better all the time), Ian Pooley's Meridian (subtle, clever, soulful d & b), loads of Cale (Honi Soit, ...New Society, Vintage Violence, Fear, Helen of Troy - anyone able to explain what makes Chinese Envoy so brilliant?) - some French d & b compilations (Future Sound of Paris vol 1 and 2 and Etienne De Crecy's Super Discount). Laurent Garnier's 360. And, picked up in a bargain bin for 250 BF (that's Belgian Francs, Ferry fans) was a slightly trashed Bob Dylan's Good As I Been to You. Bought it to laugh at but, inexplicably, it really works. Had high hopes for Reverence by Faithless but it's two great tracks and lots of third-rate filler. From some time ago, Beth Orton's Trailer Park is really going the distance. Beck's Mutations (Nobody's Fault But My Own is a killer song). Has anyone heard that Jimmy Scott cover of Slave? What's it like? The new Stereolab album? Ziggy-heavy, as Vapor says, but it's not supposed to be a documentary, after all. Enjoyed it and loved the Roxy covers. Bernard Butler (ex-Suede...) plays *such* devoted homage to Phil Manzanera on these songs. He once mentioned that For Your Pleasure was one of his favourite albums and his love for the first few Roxy LPs really shows in his playing here. He weaves together Phil solos from live and studio recordings and makes them his own. And for 2HB, Thom Yorke (Radiohead) models his vocal on Ferry's rerecording of the song but it sits on a backing that's true to the Roxy orignal. The whole thing's painstakingly held together by Mackay's note-for-note perfection. Can't quite imagine Michael Stipe of REM being into Ladytron or Bitter's End but apparently he really is (or was). He co-produced the soundtrack. Excellent effort.
