What kind of size of audience was there?, was there RTE cameras to record it? I need not ask about the atmosphere for a Dublin concert. I visited a shop in Dublin last year which sold loads of bootlegs, and it seemed to have nearly everything ever done in Dublin. I asked them had they any Ferry/ Roxy boots but no go. I presume then that no boots exist for anything done by Ferry/ Roxy in Ireland. The Edge, and probably the rest of U2, seem to have been highly influenced by Roxy. As well as this duet it is well known that Eno has played a big part in their success, and The Edge also wore the same type of flies eye glasses as Manzenara on last years tour. So perhaps Roxy has played a big part in creating the most dynamic, and best presented world tour ever. This is why I think they were the most influential band of the 70's, because nearly every pop band will mention some aspect of Roxy that they admire. Gareth. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 12:18:03 PST From: "gareth mc ginley" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Was The Velvet Goldmine Worth It??? >Excellant film if your a Roxy fan. 2HB is the most powerful moment in the >film. Watching a film in the cinema is like watching a band live. You see and >here it the way it was meant to. A video is like listening to a live CD. I didn't think much of the film. It was an unbelievable rip off of Bowie, which we have all seen before anyway. It was made out that this film was going to bring back the 70's like Oasis brought back the 60's but how many people do you know have actually seen this film? I had bother finding somewhere that was showing it even in such a culturally diverse city as Edinburgh. Maybe when the video, or TV release comes out it will prove a bit more successful. No doubt about it the music was great, capturing all the fabulous moments of Roxy inspiration. But even my friend who's a big Radiohead fan hadn't a clue that Thom Yorke had covered Roxy songs. I also walked into a music store the last day where they were playing the soundtrack, and the staff were in stitches laughing at the Roxy tracks. I guess modern pop music is such nowadays that no mass audience is ever going to "GET" Roxy again. So my advice is instead of wasting all that money on a ticket, popcorn, coke etc., go out and buy the soundtrack (RATED TOP FOR 1998 IN Mojo) because that's all there is to remember about Velvet Goldmine. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 12:25:33 PST From: "gareth mc ginley" Subject: [AVALON] advertisements So another Ferry song appears on an advertisement then. It's easy to lose money on a tour. Plus he has no contract for the new record (yet), right? If he's serious about making money he should move ahead with the RM reunion and hawk as much junk as he possibly can. Drain that cash cow ASAP. Rerecord some of their old stuff. Rush out a live album. Cover "Horse With No Name" so they can have a world-wide #1 hit. As for the ads making me cringe, well there are lots of things which would be much, much worse. Yes it was great. Pardon my ignorance, but who WAS the "Roxy" band in this film. I thought it was "Jack Ferry"'s band, but they seemed more like Alice Cooper. Was there a Roxy Music band? Hi Heather, et al, I just got back from seeing The Velvet Goldmine, and I really dug it...I have seen better structured films, but it was good and worth it just to here 2HB a few times... I loved how "Mandy" gives credit to "Jack Fairy," saying (loosly quoting) how 'Everyone stole from Jack Fairy...." Now, I don't need validation from some movie script, but it WAS great to hear that coming at me from the Big Screen. And Heather, I was wondering a bit myself as to 'who was really doing who,' as far as music... the Bowie sound was unmistake-able, but I felt the Roxy Thread throughout the majority of the music ('cept the music of Curt or was it "Chris Wilder").... I am glad I went to see it...and sat through the credits, too. A Anything to see Bryan Ferry's name on the Big Screen. Naturally I cranked the Glam Roxy Music all the way home!!
