What heresy! It just wouldn't be Roxy. 

IMHO, Genesis limped on for a short time after Gabriel left and had some
credibility left but after a bit they become just a pop band,
indistinguishable from the Phil Collins backup band. (Well, maybe some more
interesting keyboard work. Actually, Genesis was probably always Tony Banks'
band).

Hi Jim

I think the explorers failed because they were the explorers rather than
Roxy Music. In Deep Purple there are now only 2 musicians around who have
been there all the way through- Lord and Paice. Spin offs such as Whitesnake
had some success but not as much as the original. Perhaps this is why the
reformed Yes in the 80s did not call themselves Cinema.

I think the main thing however is that there is a lot of Roxy material which
is getting no airplay at all- it would be great to see it played.
Incidentally does anyone know of any Roxy/Ferry tribute bands out there?

actually they have made about 25 years- all I am saying is that something is
better than nothing. Bryan did soem good stuff on his tour but that was 5

I read that Eddie didn't sign up as a member of Roxy Music but was in fact
paid for his time, effectively as a session player. Not sure whether it
worked on a per-album basis or piecemeal. His arrangement meant that he
didn't take on the debt that the rest of the hand still carried around the
time of FYP & Stranded but at the same time, it left Bryan, Phil, and Andy
a greater share of the performance and arrangement royalties. (Eno, who
*was* heavily in debt to E.G. when he left Roxy, perhaps as a result of
advances, seems to have referred to this problem at the time of his
departure; his debt was, it seems, forcing him to live in an unheated
appartment and record in the cheapest studios available until some money
started coming in.) Anyway, Eddie didn't earn the royalties that the rest
of the band did whenever anything was performed or arranged by Roxy Music.

If I've interpreted his comments correctly then, songwriting apart, if a
record did well, he wouldn't do any better as a result. If it bombed, he
wouldn't suffer. Not sure what he *did* earn - whether he was paid for his
time or flat fees per album and tour. He has referred to this odd
arrangement publicly, mentioning also that the Ferry and the management
were keen for him to appear as a band member but I forget where this
interview was published. Perhaps Rogan's book rather tha the sychophantic,
E.G.-approved Lazell/Rhys (sp?) thing. More likely a web interview
somewhere.

Any of our well-placed sources know of the status of Ferry's new stuff or
the rumoured Roxy reunion? The latter was announced as fact on Belgian
radio (Studio Brussels), I was told the other day. Any news on an EMI
signing?

Going to see John Cale play in Cardiff on Jan 16 - promises to be an
interesting night.

Since we all share a love of Ferry/Roxy, I was wondering if some on the list
would like to share their "hidden gems," lesser known albums or artists that
might be of interest to like-minded listeners.

Since I've suggested it, I'll go first. Recommend "Sunflower" by the Beach
Boys. This gem from the Bruce Johnston era, has many beautiful songs,
impeccably arranged. Sadly overlooked, IMHO.

from the early 80's.  Fun songs, one of which was used in the Valley Girl

done in 1986.  The guitar parts are a bit Fripp-esque to me and remind me of

predictable tune?

"Predictable"?  Ouch.  This is one of my faves.

If I remember correctly, it's from the soundtrack of the remake of "The
Fly", is it not?

steve nieve, 'keyboard jungle.'  this obscure little album by elvis
costello's keyboardist contains a couple of dozen wonderful piano
compositions that sound classical in form but are nonetheless vibrant and
fresh.  don't know if it's available on cd; i bought the only copy i've ever
seen on lp 15 years ago.

'stiffs live,' a recording of an early stiff records tour.  great stuff,
with nick lowe, elvis costello, ian dury et al.  what a period piece!

I have the 45, which was released in 1986 to promote "The Fly" movie
starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis.  Side A= "Help Me".  Written by
Nile Rodgers and BF. Length= 4:35. Side B is "Broken Wings" which says
it was produced by BF, Steve Nye and Simon Puxley in 1977.  Does anyone
know the origin of this song.  Why was it released as a B-side some 9
yrs after it was written.

Why doesn't Ferry release a B-sides CD of all these songs.  Is poor
management part of the reason.  I believe Ferry has the same manager as
Roger Waters.  I bet he's not too busy with either one of them.
