I remember I first heard "Love is the Drug" when I moved to Marco Island, Florida way back in 1975. Heard it from the Miami radio stations we tried in vain to listen to when Cuba wasn't jamming the AM radio stations... And I didn't think much of it. But, alas, I was only 9 back then... Hell, I didn't even know who Roxy Music were. My next encounter with Roxy wouldn't come until the video for "More Than This" was shown on MTV in '83 or so. I was a junior in high school and we had just gotten MTV. I was **fascinated** with that video, and I probably haven't seen that video since '85 or so... I would have to say that "More Than This" may qualify as my most favorite song of all time by any artist at any time...- the dreamy lingering ending is the most satisfying musical food... (the only Ferry work that appeals to me in the same way is Nocturne) And by the way, it doesn't say so, but the UK 7" single is definitely remixed from the album version... One of the wonderful things about being raised and living on Marco Island is that I got to take more long walks at night on the beach than most people get to do in a lifetime- ohh those days of discovering the nuances of Avalon under the stars feeling the warm salty breezes... Oh, and on those hot summer nights listening and discovering Roxy live a la "the High Road..." A young, sensitive man with too much chemistry flowing through his body... Believe me, "Like a Hurricane" became a bit of an anthem for me... (BTW- no one EVER talks about this MASTERPIECE of a song...) When I went to college (Mercer Univ, Macon, GA), I began to buy the older Roxy albums one by one- and although I was more into the later albums, Siren immediately became a favorite, as well as Stranded, and to a lesser degree, Country Life. Manifesto seemed confusing at first. I mean, "Stronger Through the Years" and "Spin Me Round" don't seem like they belong on the same album. And where in the hell did those two singles from Manifesto come from? they didn't match, either... My favorite song from the 'early days' aside from anything on Siren is "Mother of Pearl." Wow. What an extraordinary song.. clever lyrics, suave groove, and the concentrated 'essence' of Bryan Ferry's 'hope-against-hopelessness-je-ne-sais-quoi...' I was very, very fortunate to see Bryan Ferry in Atlanta in 1988 at Chastain park. I'm sure I've mentioned this story before, but I still think of this concert the most moving live performance I've ever seen. Chastain Park is an amphitheater in a tres-riche part of Atlanta called Buckhead. It's open air, and unlike most venues, you can bring alcohol with you. I brought a bottle of red bordeaux...You can reserve tables at the front of the amphitheater and actually have a catering service come in and serve dinner to you.. imagine how this 22 year old (back in '88) felt when he saw f**cking candleabras (!) on the front tables with people eating cold miniature lobsters.. (I was very impresssionable and I swooned! [an interminable romantic]) I now live in Atlanta, and this experience at Chastain may have played a little part of that... And I might also mention that the weater was threatening, too. And though the storm winds were blowing, the sun did set in brilliant colors as he was about to come on stage.. started with "Limbo," if I'm not mistaken.... Have I mentioned that this park is filled with trees and lilting hills? Anyway- I have already responded too abundantly to the 1st encounter.. He was born in Dunn, N.C., the son of a dirt farming street preacher. With a lung missing from a bout with tuberculosis while serving in the Korean war, he was under doctors orders to give up any hopes of singing. His brother Vernon did all vocals, who by the way was a teen idol for a brief time under the name of Ray Vernon. I remember an interview with Pete Townsend who related a story about Keith Moon being very close to Wray and how Moon always insisted (as only Moon could) that Wray would never have to walk anywhere as long as he was around and would literally carry Wray on his back everywhere he (Wray) wanted to go, something Wray found embarrassing but allowed cause he though Moon insane. Despite his lack of lung power, Link has sung throughout his career--badly, by his own admission, although it's occasionally incredible, as evidenced by his demented interpretation of Jimmy Reed's 'Ain't That Lovin' You Baby' on his debut lp (now available on CD as 'Walkin' With Link'). It should also be noted that one-minor-hit-wonder Ray Vernon took all of his brother's publishing, meaning that Link barely receives a dime from all the movie soundtracks, CDs, etc featuring his music. Straight from Link's mouth to Vapor's ears. I've been on this mailing list for a year now, but you wouldn't know it because I rarely post messages. This is because I am a relatively new Roxy Music fan and would not consider myself a connoisseur by any means. I am quite content to read what the more knowledgeable of you out there have to say about the group, absorb and learn. What I do know is that I'm entranced by their music and have been ever since I first listened to COUNTRY LIFE and, most specifically, "Out of the Blue". It's hard to believe that, until two years ago, I had been ignorant of the genius that is Roxy Music. My first exposure to the group was not through their music - it was through an issue of ROLLING STONE in which there was an article on the 100 greatest album covers of all time. Of course, the famous cover of COUNTRY LIFE was included (can't remember what its rank was though). The sexy cover was intriguing, but I didn't march straight out to the nearest record store to buy anything by the group. Years later I caught an episode of VH1's 8-TRACK FLASHBACK that featured a performance of the glam-era Roxy Music performing "Virginia Plain" (from MUSIKLADEN, I think) and then I came across a used copy of the COUNTRY LIFE CD in a record store and finally decided to branch out a bit and try the group on for size. That CD was the only CD I listened to for a whole month straight. Best music purchase I ever made. Seven CD's and three albums later, I now have a poster of Bryan Ferry on my bedroom wall (and I'm freakin' proud of it)! Thanks for all the info you guys have contributed to the list for the past year - I learn a little bit more everyday! I am also a late bloomer to the recognition of the soulful music of roxy and b/f, Amanda but boy did i make up for it once I was turned on to them. A "special" friend and i were driving around and he stuck in a tape of roxy and the first song i heard was Out of the Blue. I was mesmerized from there. Of course my collection includes all American releases and am currently working on imports to add. Atlas, my special friend has moved on but he left me with his gift of insight and wonderful memories of when roxy and ferry was new to me------like driving around Drummond Island with Roxy soaring and the night air whispering------and driving hours to Detroit to see the Mamouna show at the Fox and after the concert driving 16 hours back home just to turn around and see ferry the next week in Washington DC. To me it was get all you can because you missed everything before and there might not be another chance to see him. Of course i fell in love with ferry's vampish style and roxy's ability to make music that something different could be heard everytime you listened. That is my story and the only regret i have is that i was not aware of when roxy was prime and the missed chances of seeing the glam boys in full glory on stage. This list has been food to a starving soul---the information that flows is something i look forward to so thanks to you all for sharing this desire with me. The pants remain unwrinkled as of yet, but the night is young--after all, it's time for the 32nd Annual Avalon Christmas party. I don't know if it's the influence of that fabulous cinematic ersatz Bowie black hole 'Velveeta Mineshaft,' but Avalon is really Busting Loose & Coming Out. Arnie looks splendid in hot pants, Lederhosen and matching anters--sort of a Ruby Starr/ Hank Kingsley look. Bahi Para certainly shines in costume as the world's smartest--and oldest--Teletubby. Eh-oh, Bahi! How delightfully common. And Dawne simply radiates in her Bob Mackie/Cher creation. Gypsy, Tramp, Or Thief, Ms Dawndalion? Perhaps a few more egg-nogs and she'll tell us yet again how she lost her cherry in 'Hollyweird' to the strains of 'Avalon' (He was an Important Man...With A Very Large Studio...blah, blah, blah). And oh so many newcomers! Martin 'Stonking' Stockman makes quite a daring statement, adding a blue ostrich-feather boa to a Brooks Brothers suit--although brown does nothing for that ruddy complexion, dear. Wait--Is that Daniel 'Deep Throat' Atterbom, dressed as the world's largest franfurter? How quizzical. Tell us, Mr D, did the ex get over that relationship-ending psoriasis? And 'Terribly Old' Kicki hurts the eyes in that yellow latex jumpsuit with exposed derriere and raspberry socks. Va-va-voom! Abba has nothing on her. Mick 'Was Everyone Gay And I Didn't Notice?' Humphrey makes an unforgettable Marlene, although after few more drinks there might be a catfight with the always- obtuse-but-still-New-Orleans-Sexy Rexy. Quiet, girls--you each make the same dress different. Lets gather 'round, you Avalon cats n' kittens, for Vapor has a tale to tell. Kicki, come sit upon Santa Vapor's left knee and snuggle up tight. And please, Heather--bending so many genders in that lime-green polyester leisure-suit--put on the cha-cha heels, pull up to the bumper and do that Doggie Dance Of Love, just once more for old time's sake? Ciao, baby, ciao...Now, Kicki, just lower that one strap, a little to the left...yes, yes, that's it...Helene, open another beer, I'll get the 3D camera... Pardon me. A little too much absinthe in the egg-nog. We are here for a contest, after all. You may recall that Vapor has had Personal Contact with Our God, The Host With The Most and That Wizard Of Was, Mr Bryan Ferry. And published Here, For The Very First Time--was it Contest #37?--were actual remarks made to yours truly. What I did not reveal was that Mr Ferry left the room during this Brief Encounter--apparently to get medicated (a shot in the 'bum,' as you English lads and lassies put it)--and left Vapor alone to his own devices for about ten minutes. I suddenly noticed that lining the back wall of the studio we were situated in were a number of multi-track tapes, and possessing a prying mind, I scribbled down as many of the unfamiliar titles as I could. Were they legendary 'Horoscope' tracks? Roxy out-takes? Songs never heard, never finished? I don't know, because Mr Ferry refused to acknowledge ANY of the titles upon his return. So for the purposes of Our Contest #146, I want you to do the following: write lyrics for these mystery titles I've pondered over the last few years. Yes, I am asking the unthinkable--create faux Roxy/Ferry word-poems! Sacrilege perhaps, but fun, no? And this is what I pledge: sometime in the next little while--say, by the year 2525, if Avalonia is still alive--I will personally present Mr Ferry with the results and report back with his response, however disgusted. Who knows, perhaps he'll need material for the 76th reunion. THE MYSTERY TITLES: Now Or Never Hear, Say Lack Of Emotion Impossible Love Yes, Dear (song for lucy) Cup Runneth Over Easy Come, Easy Go Don't Ever Love Me Out Of Fashion Someone Close By Trust Game PS. One title is an admitted phony. Part of the contest is to figure out which. Good Luck, Avalonians, and continue to worship me. Your "Special" Friend, Vapor VooDoo VooDoo!
