Fripp played on Nocturne? Where did you learn of that? And do you know the words (that are barely audible)? Something like "the way you feel" - I really like that track. The b-side of Don't Stop the Dance. Instantly transported back to 1985. Fantastic. (Do you like Japan's early or late stuff?). I was a Japan fan long before I ever discovered Roxy Music. As a 9th grader at Long Beach Polytechnic High School (this was about '85), I used to go around with headphones on, blasting "Adolescent Sex," and "Obscure Alternatives." The latter was mine and my friends anthem, while "Christiane F" was our anthem movie (wierd choice, eh?). I didn't REALLY get into RM until '93 or so. Anyway, I've always loved Sylvian, his solo stuff is every bit as good as his work with Japan. My favorite will probably always be "Obscure Alternatives." It's a haunting album. Ciao! The myth of "Roxy golden five albums" never caught me. >I found the first one especially unpleasant, with all the noise Eno made - >IMHO, only "Sea Breezes" was worth the price. Roxy was a "live" band, which is to say that they were at their best on stage. Such is the dilemma(?) with studio released works. It`s a representation of that moment in time under controlled conditions and it doesn`t always translate well or reflect what the band is really about or trying to say. I liked the first 5 albums but it wasn`t until the first of the BBC boots hit the streets that I realized just how much Roxy shined. Too bad the Viva! album wasn`t an entire show. (I`ll spare everyone the studdering rage rant I still feel about this.) I don`t think I would have been as rabid a fan as I am if it wern`t for these live boots that represent, IMO, just what Roxy was really capable of. The band is not only having a good time (and the audience is included in the fun) but you get the feeling they are comfortable and proud with what they are doing. It seems to peak in '75 (listen to the New York/London boot) but by '76, (as heard on the Stockholm show) it`s very polished and laid back but not to a point that makes them boring. When Roxy reformed in '79, they`ve seemed to have lost the edge and their sound is too polished for my taste. I find the big band sound almost unlistenable or like was pointed out above....Safer. Roxy didn`t form to be safe. IMO, Safe is boring and so were the later albums. >Anyway, I know I am not alone >in this list in preferring the last 3 to the first 5 albums. Experimentation >is not everything in this field... Keep in mind that experimentation was everything at the time of the first 5. The whole point was to break away from that peace/love hippie s**t and bring fun back into music with a style that was fresh and original. Now, this brings me to the talk of the possible Roxy reunion (I`ll believe it when I see it). I have mixed feelings about it as well, especially with the added rumor of Eno joining in. If they plan to get back to their roots and be a little dangerous, I`m all for it. Otherwise..... It`s always been my contention that the best thing that ever happened to Roxy was Eno leaving the band and Jobson joining. I think that Jobson brought to Roxy the sound that made them the best they ever were. This is not to say that Eno took anything away, but Eno leaving the band set him free to produce, not only some of the best work to come out of the 70`s, but some of the best work ever. Here Come the Warm Jets and Taking Tiger Mountain are masterpieces IMO and there`s a possibility they would have never happened if Eno had stayed. At the same time, the Eno/Manzanera creation of 801 also produced great music as did Manzanera`s solo project, "Diamond Head", another masterpiece. I`d love to see Eno in the regrouping but not so much for the sake of an original Roxy line up, but because it also adds a possible reunion of Eno and Manzanera and a possibility.........even in the slightest form, of a collaboration on a new album outside of Roxy( read into this.... 801). Now, don`t get me wrong, Ferry`s solo stuff is fine but, IMO, it pales considerably compared to the solo projects of Eno/Manzanera/801. They never stopped experimenting and this gave them a fresh creativeness Ferry was never able to achieve on his own. Gene "The failure in the art field is that it's always such a minority market - a print is only going to be received by 50 people. And the great thing about rock music is that it has the possibility of being reviewed by a very very large number of people. Somehow, I'd like to be able to tread the line between the two."
