Keep us informed on how to get hold of this GEM of a tape!! I have a friend who is a lawyer (here in Chicago) and she does copyright work - I can ask her about the laws - at least here in the sates and she may be able to help with overseas also!! Kim >>> "Martin Stockman" 12/05/98 03:28am >>> >Thank you all for the outstanding response to the T.V. performances... And thank you Gareth for proposing this project I have an alternatve idea for putting together this tape of "best of Ferry TV appearances." Yesterday I met up with a friend of mine in London called David Hooper. He runs a video production company called Espresso TV and has all the necessary facilities. He has a soft spot for the maestro and would be happy to help. Different video categories would be no problem to him, "all styles served here," but raised a minor concern about copyright. The compilation tape is cool so long as no commercial gain and distributed amongst "fans." Our list clearly fits the bill and sidesteps the legalities. What excites me about this project is that, for instance, a Londoner would not have seen the French sitcom - "Jamais, jamais, jamais," - nor the Jay Leno interview, whilst the manly (!) Rex in New Orleans probably has no idea what we're on about when we discuss The Tube, or the celebrated Swedish TV broadcast.. The end result will be fascinating. If Gareth wants I would happily co-ordinate the gathering of tapes, the editing and the distribution, from London. Dave Hooper doesn't want to be paid but suggests I take him out for a good lunch. His only criterion is that each tape sent in clearly indicates how far in the Ferry segment is, how long it lasts, and precisely what we are looking for. eg 23 minutes from beginning 14 minutes long bryan discusses European Monetary Union on RAI Uno A blank tape + something between £5-£15 would cover costs. I reckon it would take 3 weeks to get all the tapes in, (I know we've all got to search the attic and in Jim's case get over to his scary ex's place,) 2 days to edit, and another week to distribute. Anyway thats my suggestion. There's no way that I want to gatecrash your party Gareth but it might make better sense this way. I have no idea who is in his band now because I can't watch Dave do the same crap he did 10 years ago. The original guys would party quite heavily. Will said he was totally wasted on drugs but nobody noticed. He would play on a Sanborn record one night, sing on a KFC commercial the next day, stoned throughout, session after session. He actually became a millionaire from playing sessions. I have a friend who toured (drums) with Hiram Bullock early 90's. I heard the stories..Sex and Drugs and Jazz/Fusion. Been listening a lot to newer pop, Pulp, Belle and Sebastian, there's some GOOD stuff out there. But Roxy will always be my favorite. Anyway, I'm really excited about owning this box set. It's a real concern of mine that I will someday tire of Roxy Music. This box set will solve that. I can listen to all the "hits" on the set over and over again, then, just when I'm getting sick of them, I'll go back and listen to the original albums and the "other" songs (the ones that aren't on the box set) will be a novelty. That's how I will avoid Roxy Music tedium. Does anyone else have a similar strategy for how not to get sick of Roxy Music? Ciao! All this with crumpled khakis. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1998 19:33:39 -0500 From: "Decophile" Subject: Re: [AVALON] "The Tape" and Velvet Goldmine. - -----Original Message----- From: M.R.Humphrey To: avalon@smoe.org Date: Monday, December 07, 1998 3:11 PM Subject: [AVALON] "The Tape" and Velvet Goldmine. >On a different subject, I finally got round to seeing Velvet Goldmine >last night. Well, I finally got my hands on the soundtrack. I found it, of all places, on the Cherokee Indian reservation near Cherokee N.C. The clerk, who looked 40ish, claimed he was a Roxy fan way back and seemed eager to talk more about them but was too busy, so I left him to his work. Then I had a vision of the reservation in '73 with hordes of young glammed out Indians running wild through the streets with T-Rex and Roxy blaring from their cars as the tribal elders looked on in disgust and pondered their future. Made me feel real good. As far as the music on the cd, I think the covers are very good as are the original songs, but I fail to see why they added the original LP tracks of Needle In the Camel`s Eye, Virginia Plain and Satellite Of Love. On a side note, someone with the e-mail address of pbowles99@aol.com (PBowles99) has been flooding various music and 70`s related news groups with request for auditions for a Roxy Music Tribute band in the UK. It simply reads: Any budding ENO's in the London area? (Also looking for all sound-alikes except Bryan Ferry) Call Phil (0961 104371) > >I don't consider myself homophobic but I did think that the gay >scenes were a little over the top. > >The director (can't recall his name ?) seemed to have a private >agenda. Was he really suggesting that the glam rock era was anything >more than just another fashion and music trend ? > >Or _was_ everyone gay and I just didn't notice ? I`ve read post from others who expressed the same observation about the movie. I seem to recall that people ignorant to what was really going on perceived glam as being associated with gays and there was no shortage of red-necks yelling "queer" at anyone wearing a Bowie,T-Rex etc. t-shirt. It never bothered us a bit and we usually retaliated with accusations of their being responsible for the success of MacAuthor Park and Chipmunk Love. Ah, those were the times. In any case, I`m hoping Bowie`s upcoming glam movie project offers a bit more reality. And $45 to boot! I spent $70 on mine, or my father did when I made him buy it for me for a X-mas gift a few years back. Yes, the fourth cd songs are quite fun. I especially like Sultanesque. Too bad you will have to wait until December 25 to hear them though! :-) Helene - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1998 23:08:22 EST From: Helchat@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] The Thrill of It All Heather, I will go months without listening to any RM or BF and one day I will be walking along and a line from a song will enter my mind, then I have to listen to everything for at least three months. Right now I am listening to In Your Mind a great deal and Bete Noire. I listened to the entire cd collection of The Thrill of It All the weekend before Thanksgiving when I was cooking all day! It was great! I am getting ready to start listening to "the other side of the coin" again though. I haven't listened to KC since 1982-83 after Beat and Discipline. Heather, et al, Yes, I totally miss Vapor... and wish he would return to our circle...or at least make some noise. As to the notion of getting burnt out or OD-ing on RM/Bryan Ferry...I just rotate my music selection. And I know that the members of this list must, like myself, have a vast collection to choose from...other artists, other styles of music. I can't see how a true Devotee can become Permanently sick of Ferry... And with BF/RM, you can truly say that there are 'all styles served here,' in that their musical style has such variety through the years. I am certain that you, Heather, will not get permanently bored/sick of, or tired of Our Man Mr. Bryan Ferry. So Vapor, if you are out there, SAY SOMETHING!!! I could really use some humour!!
