If there was a new album, it would be very, very unlikely, IMHO, that Brian Eno wouldn't be involved. Why?! - Ferry obviously wanted to work with Eno during Mamouna, and all interviews I've seen regarding this session seemed to indicate that working with Eno was quick, painless, and creatively beneficial to the album. Obviously, Ferry's career depends upon either creating new material or profiting from old material. He doesn't want to disappear into a studio for years and spend his own money to come up with new material and he can't expect a record label to support such excesses anymore. I think Ferry is now able to overlook past differences with Eno and see Eno for what he really was.. a powerful creative catalyst. Eno is gifted with being able to "effortlessly" and spontaneously summon powerful sonic environments which have an immediacy to them that generally surpasses the smooth studio stylings of Ferry's solo work. - It seems likely that the timing of the creation of the Roxy Music official website ( http://www.roxymusic.co.uk ) was no coincidence, based on the assumption that they are reforming. ( The site was registered about 3-4 months back, right? ) It is probably no coincidence that http://www.brianeno.co.uk was created at the same time and forwards to the same site. If Eno didn't want to be involved in Roxy Music, it would be inviting a lawsuit for Phil M. to set up such a site. If anything, it sounds to me like Eno will be a fully participating member of Roxy Music, so there are fairly good odds we would see him perform with the band. I guess the question now is when are the band recording, who are they recording with, and where are they going to do it? My guess? Take a look at http://www.hyperreal.org/music/artists/brian_eno/news.html .. it seems to indicate that Eno has been spending a lot of time around London lately.. I think the band will have a busy winter ahead of them if they expect to have a quality album ready in time for those summer festivals.. and I would imagine that any prospective record label would be very interested in releasing a reunion concert CD and video. -Mark - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 06 Dec 1998 03:31:30 -0800 From: Mark Kraft Subject: [AVALON] Possible Glastonbury show? From Nov. 1977. Bryan on the front cover, pouring a glass of champagne with the tittle, "Bryan Ferry: Has the fizz ran out?" Here is the beginning of the interview . - -Jim ________________________________________________ By Janet Macoska It came as very little surprise to anyone when the five members of Roxy Music (six, if you want to count the revolving bass player) went their separate ways last year. Ferry released a single, "Let's Stick Together" and an EP in Britain, both hits which were stretched into an album in America. Guitarist Phil Manzanera released the 801 Live album and produced an Lp by Australian group Split Enz. Andy McKay got involved with Rock Follies '77, Keyboard player/violinist Eddie Jobson joined Frank Zappa's band and went on tour, while drummer Paul Thompson played with anyone who asked him. The split, incidentally, was never officially announced. It simply happened And..it was expected. Throughout the lifetime of Roxy Music controversy and rumors of discontent amongst the members were reported quite frequently. The subject of most of the rancor was the leader, singer-songwriter, image maker and undisputed (at least in his mind) creator of Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry. He was considered by some to run Roxy like Captain Bligh on the Bounty; his work and policy decisions are final. Many, including various members of Roxy, thought Bryan ran too tight a ship, stifling personal and creative freedom, thus the dissolution of Roxy Music. Cleveland being possibly the hottest spot for Roxy Music in America (several hundred fans once converged on the airport to mob the band as it arrived in town and Roxy filled 10,000 seat halls here easily). The scene opens and you are sitting on the sofa in the luxurious (for Cleveland) suite at Swingo's Celebrity Inn, across a glass table from Bryan Ferry, infamous lounge lizard, who sips his tea and engages in a soemtimes-not-so-elegant discussion about everything you always wanted to know but didn't have the nerve to ask. - ----------------------------------------- TP: There are conflicting reports as to the past, present and future of Roxy Music. Some reports say Roxy is merely on sabbatical and will one day rise again, while others state that Roxy is dead and that everyone is happy with Their own solo careers. Why is the whole matter so vague? BF: It's vague because it's vague. There aren't any plans to get together again. The next Roxy thing that is going to come out is Roxy's Greatest Hits, believe it or not (Laughs). It makes me chuckle whenever I say it. That is later this year. Whether there will be another Roxy studio album....I don't really think there will be one, but it is slightly possible, which is why there will never be any kind of statement saying "Roxy is finished." It is possible there will be another album called Roxy Music, but it probably won't be the same lineup as before. After the Siren album, everyone got down to doing there own projects. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 06 Dec 1998 20:26:24 -0800 From: Rex Estorffe Subject: Re: [AVALON] t.v appearances -Reply -Reply Helchat@aol.com wrote: > > SORRY! Apparently no tape exists of this audition, it would have been interesting to hear. Bob V. Fripp on a magazine article (a guitar one-Not Guitar Player though) stated that this tape does exist. I wanted to ask Fripp about this when he was in Chicago this year, but alas I did not go because I did not find out about the concert in time and it was sold out. In addition, there is BF + RM Video Collection which covers most videos minus Avaln and More Than This. For those in US, this is available as Japan import only in VHS and LD format. European versions won't play in US VCRs because of incompatible formats. US is NTSC and Europe is PAL. > > Please let me know...And are they all available in the US in video > > stores? Performed Love Is The Drug. I also cringe at the site of Paul playing when my favorite music guests come on. Amen. There were a three exceptions though. When Letterman was on NBC in the early eighties, James Brown ( pre arrest for Angel Dust)was on one night and he did Sex Machine. The band at the time ( Hyram Bullock, Will Lee, and Steve Jordon) COOKED-even James stopped dancing long enough to play piano!. They sounded just like the JB's, without the horns, so much so that James said that he wanted to steal the band away from Letterman. Another instance was when Iggy Pop made and apperance, again on NBC, and the band was razor sharp. Also when the late, lamented DIVINE was on to do "I was born to be Cheap"-loved it. But yes you are right, Paul should not play on everything. I can't phantom what if anything he could have added to Love is the Drug. Speaking of Fripp, I found an odd remark in the Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll concerning Robin Trower. According to this entry, after Fripp disbanded KC in 1974 he gave some guitar lessons to Trower! Anyone ever heard that before? Arnie DUH???? Have not heard that one but if memory serves me well (?) did'nt Trower release Bridge of Sighs around that time? To these ears, after listening to THAT release, Trower hardly needed lessons from Fripp. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V3 #296 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
