And thank you Gareth for proposing this project I have an alternatve idea for putting together this tape of "best of Ferry TV appearances." Yesterday I met up with a friend of mine in London called David Hooper. He runs a video production company called Espresso TV and has all the necessary facilities. He has a soft spot for the maestro and would be happy to help. Different video categories would be no problem to him, "all styles served here," but raised a minor concern about copyright. The compilation tape is cool so long as no commercial gain and distributed amongst "fans." Our list clearly fits the bill and sidesteps the legalities. What excites me about this project is that, for instance, a Londoner would not have seen the French sitcom - "Jamais, jamais, jamais," - nor the Jay Leno interview, whilst the manly (!) Rex in New Orleans probably has no idea what we're on about when we discuss The Tube, or the celebrated Swedish TV broadcast.. The end result will be fascinating. If Gareth wants I would happily co-ordinate the gathering of tapes, the editing and the distribution, from London. Dave Hooper doesn't want to be paid but suggests I take him out for a good lunch. His only criterion is that each tape sent in clearly indicates how far in the Ferry segment is, how long it lasts, and precisely what we are looking for. eg 23 minutes from beginning 14 minutes long bryan discusses European Monetary Union on RAI Uno A blank tape + something between £5-£15 would cover costs. I reckon it would take 3 weeks to get all the tapes in, (I know we've all got to search the attic and in Jim's case get over to his scary ex's place,) 2 days to edit, and another week to distribute. Anyway thats my suggestion. There's no way that I want to gatecrash your party Gareth but it might make better sense this way. More fuel for the fire, I guess. "Mel Gaynor has been asked to work on the new album by the reformed Roxy Music. Although nothing has been formalised it is believed Gaynor will jump at the chance to make a contribution to the music of the legendary Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno et al." So here we have some form of semi-official confirmation, albeit from a rather backdoor route, that they are indeed talking about recording. Good news, I say. Be Well. It's "http://www.simpleminds.com/". Go to the news section and click on Mel. I just double checked to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. It still says the same thing. This is, BTW, very much the bands own official website, and does a pretty good job of showing what can be done when a band is actively involved. I hope Roxy does as well when they finally go online.(BTW, has anyone else noticed that the title bar on Phil Manzanera's site reads PHIL MAZANERA. I think Phil needs to find out who's doing the proofreading and slap 'em around.) Regarding Roxy with Eno, I didn't get that Eno was working with Roxy from the quote. I felt more like they were referring to Roxy's history and/or legacy, and how MG hoped to make a meaningful contribution to it. After re-reading it, I see how you arrived at that conclusion, though. Although it seems a foregone conclusion that Eno wouldn't go on tour with them, maybe he is indeed considering some kind of studio role. I'm a little old to be getting all excited, but damn.... Mark The Concert Classics is a live performance recorded in Denver and contains Manifesto, Angel Eyes, Trash, Out of the Blue, A Song for Europe, Still Falls the Rain, Ain't That So, Stronger Through The Years, Ladytron, In Every Dream Home, Love is the Drug, Do the Strand, Re-make/Re-model. Also for quite a while a fire alarm appears to be going off!! The Video Collection contains a lot of the videos released with single releases - 24 in all and more Bryan than Roxy together. Some of them - Your Painted Smile, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Jealous Guy. Hope that helps. Here is a repeat of what I posted previously and didn't appear to make it onto the list - apologies if multiple copies find their way out of the system later on. It was in response to the rumour that BF may appear at Glastonbury. Incidentally, the line-up for Glastonbury is rarely confirmed until they're practically on stage, as there have been some pleasant last-minute surprises apparently. Also, there was pretty official (local BBC news) confirmation a couple of weeks before this year's festival that Bob Dylan was going to appear, but he never did. Believe it when I see it...! - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have recently (March) moved to within a few miles of Glastonbury (Avalon!), and we heard the music without moving from our front room this year! My wife, who is a closet rocker/hippie, swears she is going to brave the mud next year, but I must confess I'm not that keen. On the other hand, if you-know-who is there, I might be fighting her for the ticket! Incidentally, a short review of "Unknown Pleasures" appeared in the (British not New York!) Times last Saturday (28th Nov) , entitled "Hitting the Roxy". It was the first I had heard about the book (I've been out of touch with the list for a few weeks), so immediately ordered it from amazon.co.uk. I probably shouldn't reproduce the review for copyright reasons, but it seemed balanced enough about the book. What I couldn't take, however, was statements like: "..but essentially this is the familiar tale of a band that blazed bright and then fizzled out. Even Ferry's solo career has since whimpered to a close, with a succession of patchy albums...". Very dismissive; not what I would call a well-researched, balanced critique - at this point I usually see red and have to lie down in a darkened room! You would be hard pressed to find two seperate bands with as many different points of convergence as Roxy/King Crimson, esp. in the '70's, but I wonder if those points of convergence weren't primarily of a superficial nature; The shared management and record company, the occasional overlap of musicians, etc... Despite all that, I think the 2 bands had/have very different and unique artistic missions. (Then again, just the fact that they DO each have a specific artistic viewpoint is a shared trait of no small significance.) Basically, I guess I'm on the fence on this one. I see it and I don't. But Bob does have a point. Still, I have always wanted to see Fripp and Ferry do something substantial together. Work that Fripp has done with David Sylvian and UK art-pop band No-Man show that Fripp could fit his unique (and brilliant, IMHO) guitar style into one of Ferry's soundscapes readily. Probably moreso than vice-versa. There are few KC numbers that I can imagine BF crooning. I'm done muddying the water. Be Well.
