"Unknown Pleasures" is a well written and very well researched book on the massively influential Roxy Music. The current public perception of Bryan Ferry as a wellied up country lifer who is constantly attending high society balls perhaps overshadows the great music he has made and the cult following which made the early Roxy gig such a powerful occasion. As editor Paul Stump notes of the first Roxy album "the praise lavished on the record is like reading a slew of dictators birthday cards, so unanimous is it". This was due to it's great unpredictibility, it's irony, it's visuals, it's vision of the future, and it's lament on the past. The second album was given as good, if not greater accolades. Stump is also a great subscriber to these albums but that is where the predictibility ends. One gets the impression that the author is being over critical in places simply to show that his bias as Ferry fan is not getting in the way of what he is writing. In fact his criticisms, and appraisals pack a surprise punch when compared to past reviews. He has little good to say, for example, about any of Ferry/ Roxy's future work except for the Ferry solo albums "These Foolish Things" and "Taxi" which were generally seen by many as some of Ferry's weakest works. This is to ignore the brillance of both "Stranded" and "Country Life", to ignore the starkness, passion, and sheer attitude of "The Bride Stripped Bare", to ignore the beuty of "Avalon", and to ignore the wonderful flavour of melancholy so well employed on "Mamouna". But then not even "man of the moment" Eno comes out of this book unscathed, and Stump does, to his credit, highlight some good points of the post-Eno Roxy. At any rate this is not a book completely dedicated to Roxy's sound. It is a book about the culture that surrounded Ferry and his bandmates from 50's Newcastle, to 60's London, to the 70's in New York, Los Angeles, and just about everywhere else, to the global sophistication of the 80's. It deals with the Pop Art movement, feminism, and of course style. This cultural theme is without doubt the best aspect of the book, displaying how it shaped Roxy Music. Stump relies more on his own opinions than that of interviews, which he does with the music. Perhaps though the best prize goes to the title - "Unknown Pleasures" which is exactly what Roxy Music have become, the forgotten greats of British Rock. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Dec 1998 11:17:21 PST From: "gareth mc ginley" Subject: [AVALON] t.v appearances Last year I made an unsuccessful effort to gather together all the Roxy/ Ferry televsion appearances onto one tape from all the people who had footage on this list. I think it would be great if we could do this, such is the part played by the visuals to anything our hero does. First of all though we should get into order the list of T.V. appearances because the one on the F.A.Q. is not even near complete. With reference to Paul Stump's book and of other footage that I am aware of, here are my additions to the list: 20th July 1972: Old Grey Whistle Test (performed "Ladytron" and 1 other track) 1972: Beat Club performance 1973: Live T.V. performance in London (as shown on "Total Recall" where the presenter refers to "Ladytron" as "Try Out Girl") 1973: Live performance in Paris where 2000 fans gatecrashed the studio. 1973: Old Grey Whistle Test (performed "Do The Strand" and "In Every Dream Home A Heartache") 1973: 1 hour T.V. special in Zurich 1974: Twiggy's t.v show (performed "What A Wonderful World") 1974: Cilla Black show on ITV (performed "These Foolish Things") 1975: Superstars (performed "Love Is The Drug") 1979: Kenny Everett Show (performed "In The Midnight Hour") 1979: South Bank Show 1979: T.V special benefit for U.N.I.C.E.F. (organised and hosted by ABBA) 1985: Interview with Jools Holland in "The Tube" 1985: Live Aid (performed Sensation, Boys and Girls, Slave To Love, and Jealous Guy) 21st June 1992: Channel 4 Without Walls "This IS Tomorrow" (featuring Ferry and Richard Hamilton) 1993: Later with Jools Holland (performed "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow") 1994: ITV Sound Bites (10 minute documentary on Mamouna) 1994: Danny Baker Show (performed "Jealous Guy") Top of the Pops performances: Virginia Plain (1972), Street Life (1973), All I Want Is You (1974), Dance Away (1979), Oh Yeah (1980), More Than This (1982), Is Your Love Strong Enough (1986) Video's not included in the B.F & R.M. video collection: Dance Away, More Than This, and Avalon. I have that Beat Club performance shown on VH1 a couple of weeks ago waiting for me when I go home at Christmas but I have'nt viewed it yet so I dont know the year. Is it 1975? If anyone can add to this list please do so and if anyone is willing to copy any footage for me I'd be happy to pay the cost along with a bit of profit. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Dec 1998 11:30:03 PST From: "gareth mc ginley" Subject: Re: [AVALON] >With regards to the reunion I have some curious news from an impeccable >source : Plans are well underway for Roxy to play (and headline) one of the >nights at Glastonbury next Summer (Still Falls THe Rain anyone !? ; >thankfully the Royal Albert Hall would also be a UK tour venue. Didn't like Ferry at the time. (D'oh!) Not sure if this is what you're referring to below: >1985: Interview with Jools Holland in "The Tube" Late in 1985, a video filmed by The Tube for "Boys & Girls" to accompany an interview with Anthony Price. Spooky and rather good, although unfortunately featuring Paul Yates at some length. She pointed out during its first broadcast that she and Bryan never met during filming and that their shots were filmed on different days. He gets to play chauffeur in the vid. March/April 1986: Whistle Test Extra. An hour-long Richard Skinner interview with Ferry. Quite a detailed career retrospective, with some time spent on Boys & Girls. Features a few moments from the making of the promo for "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" with Ridley Scott. Lots of promo vids, inc. Avalon and More Than This. Repeated later that year on another Whistle Test thing with Andy Kershaw, Janice Long, and co. Can supply this on VHS video but no time soon. Early January at the earliest. >1994: Danny Baker Show (performed "Jealous Guy"). And Mamouna... I had this but seem to have lost it. If it turns up, I'll let you know. I Put a Spell On You was performed on TOTP in '93 and Don't Stop the Dance was played (lip synch!) on a few of 1985's end of year best of collections and so-called pop festivals. Ferry generally performed with the same photogenic (but not quite real) band each time. I also have magazine articles that I haven't seen on the web and keep meaning to scan in. I never get around to it... Was there ever a promo for Take a Chance With Me ? - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Dec 1998 18:15:05 -0600 From: "Victor Hastings" Subject: Re: [AVALON] t.v appearances - -----Original Message----- From: gareth mc ginley To: avalon@smoe.org Date: Tuesday, December 01, 1998 1:22 PM Subject: [AVALON] t.v appearances (snip) on this side of the atlantic there are two tv performances of which i'm aware: on 'saturday night live' (danny devito was the host) in 1987 performing 'the right stuff' and 'kiss and tell', and on 'the tonight show' performing 'i put a spell on you' and 'will you still love me tomorrow'. unfortunately i don't have either of these recorded. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Dec 1998 19:51:02 -0500 From: "tfagan" Subject: Re: [AVALON] t.v appearances RE: American TV appearances there was a Thanksgiving night performance on the David Letterman show during the Mamouna tour in which he INEXPLICABLY (can you see the disappointment on my face?) came out and performed "Love Is the Drug" (!!). - --TriTri PS I still can't get over that! - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Dec 1998 22:11:30 -0800 From: Rex Estorffe Subject: Re: [AVALON] videos Neil Ashar wrote: > > Speaking of videos, does anyone have the music videos for avalon, more > than this, etc.?
