Hello Hel! Welcome to the group! You posted: "I bought the four-disc set a few years ago called The Thrill of It All with lots of fun pics and b-side songs. I was just wondering if anyone had it and thought it was fairly comprehensive or what. I love it." Yes, this is good value indeed. The B-sides would be otherwise impossible to find (except for the collection of our Finnish friend in Avalon), and there is a fantastic remake that as I far as I know is not recorded anywhere else - Manifesto remake, one of my favourites. And the whole package is so nice, including the takes printed in the CDs... Just one song missing: "True to life", from "Avalon". No one here ever talkes about it, nut I like it very much, one of the best of their 79-82 years, It has a subtle atmosphere and fine lyrics. Best wishes for all, Vicente P.S.: Gene, you're right. BTW, in feline chronology his 53 would total up to just 301 years. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1998 12:57:39 +0100 From: Kicki Gustafsson Subject: [AVALON] Re: The Man and his Women > And did I >actually hear that Jerry and Mick separated today? I think that they basically had too little in common, the split up was unavoidable. But was is the present status of Bryan's marriage with Lucy?? She apparently had some serious drinking/drugs-problem some years ago. /Kicki G - curious - --------------------------- Kicki Gustafsson http://www.torget.se/users/k/KickiG kicki.gustafsson@op.se - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1998 12:58:33 +0100 From: Kicki Gustafsson Subject: Re: [AVALON] Hello Hel! >Best wishes for all, > > >Vicente > > >P.S.: Gene, you're right. There was talk of a Roxy bio a few weeks ago (I've been looking at the archives), and I actually picked up this book at the weekend. You may have great difficulty in finding this book, as I checked every major bookshop in Glasgow and I only saw one copy which I bought. It's a very detailed, and well researched book with some very good points. As "Uncut" magazine noted in it's glowing review of the book it's almost like a thesis. Notably though it mentions that none of the members were willing to give interviews to the author nor was Ferry's management willing to proof read it. I wonder why? Is the management arranging a book of it's own to coincide with a possible reunion? By chance I also picked up a copy of "The Bryan Ferry Story" last weekend in a secondhand bookshop. Despite it's completely biased stance on Ferry (the author even praised the abysmal video's for "These Foolish Things" & "A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall") it was a beutiful tribute, short but sweet with some great photographs. One of them of Ferry as a youngster even looks like Rodney out of "Only Fools and Horses" - there's hope for any ugly ducklings out there yet. There is also, of course, the new book out on Glam Rock featuring new interviews with Ferry and David Enthoven, although no mentions of what might be to come in the future. Just a mention on some of the other news since I left. "Concert Classics" gets better every time I hear it. I can understand the critics slating it when it came out as I wasn't too impressed when I first heard it but the performances on "Out of the Blue", "A Song For Europe", Manzenara's solo on "In Every Dream Home" are top class, and the rest of the concert is also very good with the exception of "Manifesto", the opening track. Come to think of it every live performance of "Out of the Blue" is excellent. I purchased "Heart Still Beating" recently also and that again is the best track. Finally I don't know if a Roxy reunion would work since the rock critics seem only too ready to criticise Ferry for everything he does nowadays, even his best solo album to date "Mamouna". I guess thay just cannot accept that someone over 50 can still be near the height of his creative best. Gareth P.S. Thinking of going to a Pulp concert in Glasgow next weekend. Is anyone else here going or would they recommend it. They are about the only 90's act I'd be bothered going to see. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1998 19:17:20 -0000 From: "Mary Hunwicks" Subject: [AVALON] Velvet Goldmine - -----Original Message----- From: jas2347@xsite.net To: Avalon Discussion Group Date: 23 November 1998 03:08 Subject: [AVALON] Big, Puffy, Dissolute??? >Speaking of which, I saw Velvet Goldmine last night. It's called 'Glam! Bowie, Bolan and the Glitter Rock Revolution' and is by Barney Hoskyns. I haven't read the book yet, but there's quite a few references to Roxy and group members in the Index and also a chapter 'the lives of bryan and brian' Mary - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1998 20:21:30 +0000 From: "Martin Stockman" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Ferry literature - ---------- Regarding gareth's "find" of "the Bryan Ferry Story" - have always thought that Rex Balfour was a "nom de plume" of the ubiquitous Simon Puxley. Ferry stalwart and crazy wordsmith Puxley is, of course, responsible for the fantastic cover notes of the first Roxy album but also the charming and poetic notes that came with the "Windswept" single. Am I alone in believing this to be Puxley's finest hour ? And is anyone interested in the said text ? Still didn't see Velvet Goldmine, maybe next week. Does the character of Jack Fairy or wahtever even look like him? I think that the character of Jack Fairy is the "link" between the main character Brain Slade and Curt Wild ( i.e Bowie and Iggy Pop). He does not look like our Bryan ALTHOUGH he does gget to sing 2HB in a long leather "dress" with feathers. You'll just have to see it to believe it-very stylish I might add. I forgot the name of the actor that played him. If you have the latest issue if Rolling Stone or visit their web site you will be able to get some more info. And did I actually hear that Jerry and Mick separated today? I wonder if she ever thinks what a wrong move it was to dump Bryan for Mick? Yes I read it too and if you read it closely it appears as thouugh it's divorce time. Of course Jerry has threatened this before and Mick relented at the last minute. I wonder this time though. Did she make a big mistake to dump Bryan for Mick? It's kind of hard to tell now. I do wonder if she has called Bryan for advise or comfort ( you know just two old friends just chatting). I'm sure Bryan will be the gentleman that he is and will offer some kind words ( I hear Chance Meeting in the background). Do you think maybe he still has a soft spot in his heart for her? And here's an insubstantial tidbit but one nonetheless....this last Sunday's Chicago Tribune magazine crossword puzzle had as one of the 4 down across or whatever Bryan Ferry's band, the answer of course being Roxy. Well I warned you that it was trite!
