This is my first message to this list. My name is Kicki Gustafsson, I'm 35, living in Östersund, Sweden, journalist (night editor), married, two kids. However: Does anyone know anything about this site: http://www.roxymusic.co.uk/ ? It looks very "official", but if it is, who is behind it? Has Bryan taken a HTML-diploma, or is it one of his boys...? /Kicki G - ------------------------ Kicki Gustafsson, Östersunds-Posten 063-16 16 51 http://www.op.se http://www.torget.se/users/k/KickiG (privat hemsida) - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Nov 1998 14:37:13 -0600 (CST) From: Heather Marie Propes Subject: Re: [AVALON] Roxy site You're right, Kicki, that is very wierd! I heard that David Bowie now has an ISP. I wonder if it could have anything to do with that! Well, in the meantime, why don't we all listen to some Roxy Music: ftp://cyberdron.whitewind.ru/pub/mp3/Songs/Bryan_Ferry/Songs/ Ciao! There are co.uk variations of one or two. Ferry's management (ie management) have regsitered one for him, too, but it's empty. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Nov 1998 22:36:39 -0600 From: "Victor Hastings" Subject: [AVALON] I'm bored.... well, with no album on the horizon and nothin' much to talk about, i decided to come up with my ten favorite non-roxy albums of the late 70s and early 80s -- in other words, about the time i became a roxy fan. so this post is decidedly non-roxy but i've always been intrigued by the non-roxy musical tastes of the members of this list. so here goes and if this is a boring post, sorry. ‘armed forces,' elvis costello. this guy started his career by releasing four or five truly great albums. this one is my favorite. turn it up loud when 'what's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding' comes on. ‘call of the west,' wall of voodoo. a wonderfully eccentric and well crafted album. if bryan ferry had grown up in southern california watching spaghetti westerns he might have turned out to be stan ridgway. unfortunately this album's success drove ridgway from the group and nothing he or they did since has captured the same magic. you've got to love a writer who comes up with lines like 'i wish i was in tijuana/eating barbecued iguana'. ‘english settlement,' xtc. another wonderfully eccentric group. make sure to buy the full version; the United States release was cut from a double album to a single. ‘dare,' human league. i love the sound of this album. nothing but synthesizers and mock-serious lyrics. ‘the clash,' the clash. everything the human league isn't: raw, spontaneous and pissed off. my favorite punk album. ‘love over gold,' dire straits. ‘industrial disease' has some of the best wordplay this side of ‘do the strand.' the rest of the album isn't quite as good but is still one of the group's best efforts. ‘murmur,' r.e.m. i don't really care much for this group but this album is, imho, their best. and it's got a sentimental pull for me. mitch easter, who produced this record, had a garage recording studio in my college town of winston-salem and was beginning to get attention from the music press in 1981 for his efforts. some friends of mine who were in a band saw the articles, got in touch with him and had him produce a single of original music. within a year r.e.m. was big big big but i figure that i got to shake the hand that shook the hand of the man who shook hands with michael stipe. ‘talk talk talk,' psychedelic furs. roxy clones? maybe, but this album stands on its own. great wall of sound production. the furs' decline began when they remade 'pretty in pink' for john hughes. ‘metro music,' martha & the muffins. hardly a classic album but a nice debut by a group that recorded some nice music in the 80s. they toured with roxy sometime around ‘f+b'. ‘stand in the fire,' warren zevon. buy this album and you won't need to buy anything else of his. solid, spirited live versions of his best stuff. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V3 #276 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
