Subject: [AVALON] New Roxy Bio? Fellow Avalonians-- Last week I attended this massive book fair in Frankfurt (for work), was rushing around the exhibits aimlessly when I looked up and saw an immense poster of our heroes and reference to a new biography. Is this old news? A topic I missed? If so, feel free to delete the rest of this. If not, here's all I could find out. The title was Unknown Pleasures: A Cultural Biography of Roxy Music. The author was Paul Stump and the publisher was UK-based Quartet Books. Of the people that were IN the Quartet Books stand, no one knew anything about it, sans what was in the catalogue I snatched. Here's all it said: Roxy Music are one of the most influential of the bands of the 1970s, and yet the literature devoted to them and their charismatic frontman and chief creative force, Bryan Ferry, is surprisingly thin. No books about the band have been published since their demise as a performing unit in the summer of 1983. Unknown Pleasures: A Cultural Biography of Roxy Music sets out to revisit the magic of Roxy Music's heyday, by telling the story not only of the band but also of the times which both influenced and were influenced by their unique music and stylistic discourse. Few, if any, bands have both so precisely reflected and simultaneously contributed to the era in which they enjoyed their greatest successes. This new study of the band, published to coincide with the release of the film Velvet Goldmine, is a vital document of popular culture in the 1970s. According to the promotional piece, it's supposed to be released in November, is 352 pages, will sell at a cost of 12 pounds, ISBN 0 7043 8074 9. If anyone has seen this or has any more info, do tell! Kelly After seeing a few digs at Asia over the last few days I hate to say that I have a book "The musics all that matters " Paul stump A history of progressive Rock. In the front sleave it says that Paul stump writes for the Sunday Telegraph etc. It also says that he is currently writing a cultural biography of Roxy Music. (but perhaps it is not being published by Quartet books) I would say that the book is a bit of progressive rock meets university thesis. I took it on holiday and found it heavy going, however there are some good snipppets of information in his progressive rock book even if they are not always easy to find or follow. However i would say that the author does have a wide view of the music scene. Presumably as you have carefully noted the ISBN number any good book seller should be able to loacte and order. As you say something is long overdue... I loved Andy Newmark w/ Bryan Ferry and his work w/ Bowie, but w/ Roxy live , he just didn't do it for me. The original feel was lost. Who would be a better fit for the 70's Roxy? One that comes to mind is Cozy Powell. He started out w/ the Jeff Beck Group and then played w/ quite a few groups like Rainbow, Michael Shanker, Emerson Lake and Powell (replaced Carl Palmer). I feel he could have done the older songs some justice. Unfortunately he died just a few months ago. I was not taking a shot at Asia, I just thought it would be odd hearing Wetton break into an Asia song, like Andy and Phil did w/ Wild Weekend/Diamondhead. But since you bring it up, has there ever been a more underachieving band? One that the sum of it's parts by far exceeds the whole. Maybe Return to Forever, the jazz fusion combo of Chick Corea, Al Demiola, Stanly Clark and the drummer was...Lenny White? I expected so much more. Chemistry is everything. On the other side, the band I saw in the 70's that the whole was much greater than the parts was J. Giels, a local (Boston) band. You can find more skilled players in your local Top-40 band, but these guys knew how to play together, for each other, for the audience. Yes they really sucked at the end, but they had quite a run.
