I got into Roxy by eating my words. At first I didn't like Love is the Drug, and swore they were no good. THEN I listened to Siren, and went out and bought EVERYTHING! Of course, thanks must go to schoolmates Keith Proper (where are you?) and my STILL best friend, Peter Whitcomb, who got me to experiment instead of just liking the Beatles and The Stones. This was 1975. I saw Ferry in 77 on the In Your Mind tour, opening for labelmates J. Geils Band (local openers were THE CARS, pre-fame of course!) Spedding WAILED on that guitar. Didn't see Roxy until 79, on the Manifesto Tour (Boston Orpheum show from Mar 79, a tape which circulates), and the highlight was an extended intro on Manifesto - Bryan's mike didn't want to work! It was 9 years before I saw Bryan again, this time at the Palladium in London, Dec '88. I have to say I like most periods of the band equally; however, I find Bryan seems to have stagnated sound-wise; everything since Avalon sounds like a derivative of Avalon! Taxi was basically covers of songs done in the Avalon style, and Mamouna went absolutely NOWHERE. I find both it and Taxi so much elevator noise, save for I put a spell on you, and TAXI. Bryan needs to stop dicking around and get Roxy back together, with ENO producing. I too lament the lack of recognition for RM/BF. In that VH1 100 greatest artists, I was SHOCKED that other artists did not recognize RM as an influence! What losers did they ask, anyway? Yes, it is IMHO that RM were the godfathers of all those "new romantic" bands of the early/mid 80's; Spandau, Depeche, Duran, Eurythmics...the list goes on. I truly hoped that the Maniacs version of More than this would whip up some interest, but, it's kind of a lame. RM was very experimental, ground-breaking, and risk-taking. With age, however, BF has lost that edge. B&G, BN, and Mamouna were all basically remakes of Avalon; each one got more diluted, until we have reached the point we are at now...NOTHING. I gotta ask: what is this 79 concert CD? And what is the status of any RM related works? Has anyone thought of moving this to My Deja News? It could get more attention....
