You know, that sounds pretty funny coming from the guy whose own "fame and reputation" rest on "Tubular Bells," pointless snooze-fest o' repetition that it is. But don't mind me: I just dropped in to say that one of the best RM guitar solos is the understated little gem in the middle of "Oh Yeah." Les ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Aug 1998 07:48:20 -0700 From: "Vicente Dobroruka" Subject: [AVALON] Re: avalon-digest V3 #209 Dear fellow avalonians, "and he's stuck on the "Oh Yeah" side of things"... So what? I am really fond of RM in the 79-82 period. In my opinion, they were "ripe" then (is that theword in English?), while there was a great deal of virtusoity during 70-75 - but experimentalism is not the point, in my opinion. Sure Manifesto, Flesh and Blood and Avalon were, as MacKay said recently, a "Ferry thing". So the best for the band, since he was the real brain of all the stuff. It is impossible to imagine RM without Ferry though we can without Paul Thompson (great drummer, BTW). Most of my favourite Roxy songs are from the period - "My only love", "Avalon", "Take a chance with me", all the versions for "Angel eyes" and "Dance away", to name but a few. They had more swing, and spent less time experimenting. Damn if this makes them more "commercial", we are talking about a pop band and not about some dissident trotskist group preocuppied with purity. Best wishes for all, Vicente ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Aug 1998 09:33:23 -0400 (EDT) From: jason and jill Subject: [AVALON] welcome file [This hasn't been sent to the list in a while, and I'm gettting a lot of f*cked up messages sent to majordomo by folks that didn't save this...] Welcome to Avalon, the Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music mail list. To provide a little background, this list moved around a bit before finally landing at smoe.org, so you may have seen it listed a few different ways in books like NetMusic. This welcome message is in four parts: 1) list preliminaries (address to write to, etc.) 2) list rules 3) the majordomo help file 4) the Avalon FAQ. The FAQ covers frequently asked questions and is good introduction to the list, as well as an easy way to avoid asking questions that have been answered a million times before. Preliminaries: The address to post to is: avalon@smoe.org The address to send sub/unsub/etc. messages to is: majordomo@smoe.org OR avalon-request@smoe.org The difference between the addresses is that when you write to - -request you don't have to include the listname in your command. When you write to majordomo, you have to include the listname. So: To unsub from this list mail to majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe avalon OR, you can write to avalon-request@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe If you are on the digest you can switch to loose mail by sending this message to majordomo@smoe.org: unsubscribe avalon-digest subscribe avalon Or, if you are subbed to the loose mail version, you can receive the messages in a once-a-day-or-so digest by sending this message to majordomo@smoe.org: unsubscribe avalon subscribe avalon-digest Please note that commands go in the message body, not the Subject: line. Please don't add any additional information or punctuation to commands, you will only confuse the program interpreting them. Avalon list rules: 1) No one checks messages before they go out. So you are responsible for what you post. 2) The list owner does read the messages AFTER they are posted, and if you prove to be a dick I can delete you from the list. 3) Check your headers before you send a message to the list. Mail goes to avalon@smoe.org Do not have a Cc line or To anyone else. If you do, the list will send out your posts to members of the list, while your own system sends the post to the list and to the additional people listed in the CC and TO lines. So if your message is To: the list and person X, and CC person X, the result will be that person X will receive three copies of your post and will then write to the list complaining that they are getting duplicates. Please avoid doing that. 4) If you have any problems with the listowner, write privately with your grievances. Airing of manifestos to the list can result in an ...unpleasant... response. ;) Anyway, that kind of problem has only come up once, but to avert further difficulties just mail jgreshes@netaxs.com if you have a prob. 5) Please only post text to the list. What that means is, don't send binaries like jpgs and gifs. And don't send uuencoded stuff, either, please. 6) List topic: The list topics are Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music. Try to keep related to that topic, but pretty much any music-related discussion is fine. I just try not get into Eno posts b/c there is an Eno list, that list was around first, and I have no desire to step on that lists' toes. Please don't feel too limited as far as your music posts. After all, a few months ago people started talking a lot about John Cale, and the result was the formation of a John Cale list. Just try not to waste people's space with posts about the usual political, religious, etc. crap that lists bog down on. 7) There is a digest version of the list. To get the digest, unsub from avalon and subscribe to avalon-digest. You can do it with one message: subscribe avalon-digest unsubscribe avalon The list archive status is up-in-the air. I have most of the lists posts stored, but not immediately available. If you want the whole laod emailed to you, write me. The FAQ below lists where some older Avalon archives are stored. Finally, save this message unless you want a housecall from my favorite moyl. If you don't know what that is, go up to your nearest Jewish friend (of course if you are Nebraska, that could be a long trip) and ask. When is Bryan Ferry's next record coming out? It is slated to be released next spring (source: Billboard magazine, 1996) and it will be produced or co-produced by Robin Trower. In addition, Bryan had been reportedly working with Dave Stewart on this album. He was quoted saying that he and Dave had been friends for many years and that their friendship goes back to when The Tourists supported Roxy in the 1970s. 2. When and where will he be going on tour? Tours usually co-incide with album releases, so expect to hear something in March or April if the album is released on time. There is a possibility that Dave Stewart will be part of this tour. 3. What is the status of a possible Roxy reunion? Rumo[u]rs from 1993 to 1996 suggest that Bryan was offered good money for a Roxy reunion tour, but was more interested in studio work with the band, if anything. He has repeatedly suggested that it might be interesting "to do something" for the 25th anniversary of the first album, which was released in 1972. 4. Who are Roxy Music? - --Bryan Ferry (Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure, Stranded, Country Life, Siren, Manifesto, Flesh and Blood, Avalon) --Graham Simpson (Roxy Music) --Andy Mackay (Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure, Stranded, Country Life, Siren, Manifesto, Flesh and Blood, Avalon) --Eno (Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure) --Paul Thompson (Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure, Stranded, Country Life, Siren, Manifesto) --Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure, Stranded, Country Life, Siren, Manifesto, Flesh and Blood, Avalon) --Eddie Jobson (Stranded, Country Life, Siren - --Gary Tibbs (Manifesto) - --Alan Spenner (Manifesto, Flesh and Blood, Avalon) - --Paul Carrack (Manifesto, Flesh and Blood) - --Allen Schwartzberg (Flesh and Blood) - --Andy Newmark (Flesh and Blood, Avalon) - --Simon Phillips (Flesh and Blood) - --Neil Jason (Flesh and Blood) - --Gary Tibbs (Flesh and Blood) - --Paul Carrack (Flesh and Blood, Avalon) - --Neil Hubbard (Flesh and Blood, Avalon) - --Jimmy Maelen (Avalon) - --Fonzi Thornton (Avalon) - --Yanick Etienne (Avalon) - --Rick Marotta (Avalon) - --Kermit Moore (Avalon) Guests: - --John Porter (For Your Pleasure) - --John Gustafson (Stranded, Country Life, Siren) - --Chris Lawrence (Stranded) Detailed information on additional musicians and "guests" on studio and live recordings can be found at http://www.dlc.fi/~hope. 5. How did Roxy Music get their name? A. Andy McKay and Bryan Ferry compiled a list of glamorous fifties picture houses, and Roxy seemed the best--almost a slightly camp description of the music. But the name was already taken by an American band, so they became Roxy Music. 6. How would you describe their music? Roxy Music's first sound was classified as "glam rock," due mainly to their look (feathers, make-up, spangles, platform shoes, etc.), but actually their early music was a mix of 50's rock'n'roll, futuristic sounds and noises, crooner ballads, hard rock and vanguard experiments. With the departure of Brian Eno there was a change in look (Bryan turned to his well-known formal style, with suits and ties), and the music gradually adopted funky, soul, disco, and tropical rhythms. The last Roxy Music albums show the style that Bryan developed in his last solo career: dark sounds, minimalist lyrics with soul and rhythm and blues background, creating an intimate and sensual atmosphere. 7. Who are Bryan Ferry's influences ? Otis Redding (Bryan named his son after him), Billie Holliday, the Beach Boys, the Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Smokey Robinson, theVelvet Underground, James Brown, Bob Dylan, Marc Bolan, _Casablanca_, Richard Hamilton (painter), Elvis Presley, and John Lennon. 8. Who did Roxy Music influence? Lots of new wave bands during the 1980s adopted Roxy Music's sounds and fashion, Ferry's original vocals, and/or his romantic and surrealistic lyrics: Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Japan, ABC, Ultravox, etc., and veteran artists too, like David Bowie. 9. What was the deal with this Country Life cover that I've heard so much about? The Country Life album cover was censored in the U.S. (and perhaps elsewhere) when it was initially released. All it had on the cover was the bush minus the girls (probably a reprint of the back cover). Subsequent re-releases have restored the girls to the cover. 10. What did Roxy Music release? Roxy Music (1972) For Your Pleasure (1973) Stranded (1973) Country Life (1974) Siren (1975) Viva! (1976) Greatest Hits (1977) Manifesto (1979) Flesh and Blood (1980) Avalon (1982) The High Road (1983) The High Road Video (1983) Roxy Music - Total Recall - A History 1972 - 1982 (Video, 1989) Heart Still Beating (1990) Street Life (1986) [Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry] The Ultimate Collection (1988) [Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry] The Thrill of it All (Boxed 4 CD set) (1995) More Than This (Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music CD and video) (1995) For more information on non-album releases, you can check out http://www.castrop-rauxel.netsurf.de/homepages/j.delmere/rbook.htm http://www.dlc.fi/~hope 11. In "The Magic Sword" there is a misty scene with a knight on a horse where the MST3K comics start to sing "Avalon." In the hilariously awful "Teenager from Outer Space" the lead character, who looks a bit like Ferry, gets up off the floor, his disheveled hair trailing over his forehead. One of the comics yells out "It's Bryan Ferry." 18. What DID the guys in the band think of Jerry.... and all the other babe-girlfriends of HIS that he put on the album covers? Sometimes, the cerebral connection or the soul conncection between 2 people is not clearly evident. Jerry HAD to have something going on upstairs for a guy like Bryan to dig on her... Bryan in my opinion is like the Thinking Man's Rockstar... and a guy like that can not only HAVE his choice of chicks, but also, I imagine, he would also pursue someone that somehow spoke to His Soul. And that was, at one time, Jerry Hall. And besides, I was TOO young for our Hero Bryan.... I was 10 years old when then had their thing goin'.... More likely "Sticky Fingers" or "Let It Bleed" or "Exiles" than "Bridges to Babylon", right? Arnie Well you almost got me there. I try to mix it up but Yes I am drawn back to Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers ( Brown Sugar is the first song I learned how to play completely on guitar and can match Keith note for note-you always remember your first one!) Get Your Ya Yas Out (a GREAT live album) Exile ( only because Rocks Off reminded me of a Carribean cruise I took three years ago then again so does Bittersweet ( notice how I bring it back to Roxy)) and Some Girls (When the Whip Comes Down gets everything going every time). Now for what follows, kind of spotty, some Tatto you, some Emotional Rescue, not to much Undercover, maybe two cuts on Steel Wheels and a few on Voodoo lounge. Dirty Work-hey they hardly tried. Bridges to Babylon- a few cuts but growing on me. So I pick and choose, but I don't count them out entirely. They can still rise to the occassion when needed be. At least they're better than there American counterparts-Arrowsmith ( I can hear the e-mails being typed up now.) Yes there best work is behind them, but they are still out there. It will be a truly SAD day for music when Keith goes ( just as when Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon died). I guess it was enevitable that a bootleg of the Double Door set was made. I would like to know how to get it. I was one of the thousands who had to stand outside the club that night they played. That place is so small and was a total surprise to everyone that is chosen. As for Jeri Hall, yes she arouses interest even if she has really nothing to say or maybe she grooming Scarlett to do that. I wonder how Mick feels NOW that his daughter is a model and a budding SIREN at that??? Blondie kicked and Debbie was pogoing all over the place one One way or Another. I miss that! Bryan ( not our hero) and the other Beach boys looked wasted especially Dennis. It was only a matter of time. It's hard to argue with these. That must be Hubbard on TTYO, he was the only guitar player on the credits and it sounds like him. This song is as far from Roxy as it gets. No Manzenara or McKay. I like the cello is used on this song. My favorite Manzanara solos are "Mother of Pearl" and "Still Falls the Rain", I'm thinking of the versions on the 79' "On the Road" video. He was great that night. Also Neil Hubbard (I think) on "More Than This". It's hardly a solo at the end, just little blurbs, like throwing paint at the canvas. Anything more would have been less. His style was tailor made for where Ferry was heading in the 80's. I thought "Saint of Me" was some vintage tune I had never heard, like when I first heard "Almost Heard You Sigh" Someone mentioned Mick's solo album, what song went like " I don't want to see your picture no more" "Don't Tear Me Up" or something like that. He wrote it about Jerri Hall when they separated. It's a great tune. One song from the 80's I'll put up with any of their stuff is "Slave". I was 16 in 1981 and went to the Home Audio Show at a convention center in Boston with a friend. Before we went in we got experienced for one of the first times out back. It was just a bunch of stereo equipment. Soon we reached this giant system with speakers larger than any I had seen. "Hang Fire" was just ending. I knew the tune, it just came out. Then it came on, "Doo at, Doo at Doo at" it sounded like. It was so loud and clean. I was blown away, the organ, piano, sax and of coarse guitars. The drums sounded huge. I was frozen there , forgot where I was. when the song was over I looked at my friend and we both started laughing and walked away. Everyone else was running around while we stole the moment. This was in response to conjecture about his decision not to participate in Velvet Goldmine. He simply stated he didn`t want to work on a competitive film. He refused to go into anymore detail. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Aug 1998 00:35:53 +0300 From: "Michael Hillman" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Guitar Solos In terms of piano solos my favourite was the one on "A Song for Europe" Michael - ---------- > From: jspellma@techadvisers.com > To: avalon@smoe.org > Subject: Re: [AVALON] Guitar Solos > Date: 22 August 1998 20.41 > > Victor wrote: > > >here are my picks: > > >manzanera at the end of 'dream home' and in 'serenade' > > >knopfler's work on 'windswept' -- not so much a 'solo' as a great > >accompaniment. > > >waddy wachtel's short solo in 'sign of the times' which i think works very > >well in the context of the song. > > >neil hubbard's -- i think it's him -- solo in the middle of 'to turn you > >on' -- has great chord changes, gives me shivers when i listen to it. > > It's hard to argue with these.
