The Stones release albums and tour every three years but can anyone honestly say that anything in the last 20 years is memorable beyond that tour? They're an oldies band like the Monkees or Steve Miller or any of the other perennial "summer tour" bands that haven't made a material contribution in decades". Arnie, you couldn't have said better. Let me add two perennial "summer tour" dudes to your list - Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton. I prefer to wait Ferry's coming back from another cocktail party and be sure of getting something at least reasonable like 'Mamouna'. Best wishes for all Vicente ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Aug 1998 08:23:59 -0400 (EDT) From: Dan Ream Subject: [AVALON] The Stones & Drugs/Ferry in a Club/Pictures of Lucy Gene-- I agree in part with your Avalon posting on the Stones, but as still a pretty big Stones fan, let me comment on your comments a little. The Stones and drugs is a strange relationship, in that Keith Richards heroin addiction ran from about 1971 to 1978, during which time they did 2 of their best albums, Sticky Fingers & Exile. I think the bad effects of the drugs started to show after that. Goats Head Soup was a severe drop in quality, as was It's Only Rock N Roll and the bottom (I agree with you here) in Black and Blue. Keith didn't kick heroin until AFTER his famous Toronto drug bust in 1977, after which he went to a rehab center. Some Girls in 1978( a huge comeback) was his first album after cleaning up (though Mick seemed to be heavily into Coke on the 1978 tour). Keith still drinks and smokes too much for a guy in his fifties, but that's Keith, I guess. Since then, I'd say their albums are mixed quality. Out of the 80s and 90s material I can make 2 excellent compliations on cassette, which would include 4 or 5 songs from their latest "Bridges To Babylon". They still got it--in flashes at least. Actually my favorite Stones recording in recent years is a boot recording of their nightclub show in Chicago last summer at the Double Door, a week before they began their US tour. After alot of years and hearing a lot of recordings, I was shocked at how different and how great the Stones sound in a bar, playing songs like "19th Nervous Breakdown" and "Little Queenie". Getting back to Roxy in a roundabout way, are their any recordings of Roxy or Ferry playing in a small club around ?? And another long-held question....where could I find a picture of Brian's wife, Lucy? I have never seen her picture after all these years. Thanks. - --Dan Ream Richmond, Virginia On Wed, 19 Aug 1998, Decophile wrote: > -----Original Message----- > From: Will Frechette > To: avalon@smoe.org > Date: Tuesday, August 18, 1998 1:54 PM > Subject: Re: [AVALON] sub-culture wars > > > > > > > >ASchulberg@aol.com wrote: > >> YECCHH! EC has toured a bit more of late but at least he has new product, some of it very good. Paul has toured the States maybe once, twice in the last decade and, although I'd be going for the oldies, I'd like to see the show. Steve Miller goes out EVERY year like Jimmy Buffett or Lynyrd Skynyrd and there's very little new or at least nothing of interest. The Monkees and Steve Miller-HA! Give me a break.>> You may prove my point, Jas. Sure the Stones probably still give a great show. But isn't 90% of the material in their shows pre-1978 stuff? How many songs are they playing from "Steel Wheels" or some of the other, unmemorable albums from the last 15 years? And when you play your Stones stuff for your daily fix, what are you listening to? More likely "Sticky Fingers" or "Let It Bleed" or "Exiles" than "Bridges to Babylon", right? Sure they're not the same. I thought the 1st 3 albums w/ Mick Taylor were the best. But to say they have released no memorable material in the last 20 years? How about Start Me Up, She's so Cold, Let Me Go, Emotional Rescue, T&A, Waiting on a Friend. Then there was Undercover, Harlem Shuffle, Rock in a Hard Place, Mixed Emotions. My favorites from the 80's were Slave and Dance part 1. Also Almost Heard You Sigh is a beautiful tune. Love is Strong and Anybody Seen My Baby weren't bad either. In their recent tour I thought one of the highlights was Saint of Me and Out of Control (yes from the new album). The biggest highlight was going to the small stage in the middle of the stadium with just a Fender Twin each, ala the 60's with just a 5 piece band, they played Last Time and the best version of Like a Rolling Stone I've heard since Hendrix covered it. They sound much better now than they did 10 years ago. Say you don't like them or they have past their prime, but to compare them to Steve Miller and the Monkees? They didn't reunite, because they never broke up. Bill Wyman left because he was 60 and he retired. Your all wet on this one Arnie. Bryan should pull a Mick and get touring for HIS DEVOTED FANS!!! Almost Heard you Sigh.... Ah, yes....great tune. Great memories. While I won't defend the Stones' recent output (and my mind boggles at GOATS HEAD SOUP and IT'S ONLY ROCK 'N' ROLL being hailed as "masterpieces"), I must point out that "Sister Morphine" was played almost every night on last year's Stones tour, and the Stones' Nashville show last year was the best live performance I saw in 1997. I was expecting them to rip me off, but instead they delivered 2 1/2 hours of white-hot rock and roll, and I was as surprised as anyone. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Aug 1998 23:43:35 -0400 From: jspellma@techadvisers.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Sticks asn Stones......
