Thought it worth noting that another song that does that is The Strawbs' "Lay Down". King Crimson used to use mellotron extensively but never managed a big showy mellotron climax. In both ITIS and "Lay Down" there's no melltron in the song until the climax. Guess that's what makes it so effective. Oh, and on another thread, the official Steve Winwood site is www.stevewinwood.com. True, but what always did it for me was the stark piano/drum bit at the end, and BF screaming "Shake your head, girl..." My first time hearing that was the precise moment I became a Roxy Music fan (Viva! was my starting point). - --Don - -- Don Becker becker@panther.adelphi.edu http://www.adelphi.edu/don Unix System Administrator, Adelphi University "I am not anything to you. In fact, the cool weather is a nice relief from the statewide sauna that is Texas in the summertime. However, after getting stuck in an hour long traffic jam at 11:30 on a Tuesday night on I 94 all because of a merging highway, I must say that the traffic in this town is absolutely horrendous. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 22:32:38 -0400 From: jspellma@techadvisers.com Subject: RE: [AVALON] AUCTION COUNTDOWN!!! Things worked out in strange ways, and I was lucky enough to see BF a few times on his last tour. The New York City show was supposed to feature an appearance by my best friend, a Miss W, but she had to cancel at the last moment--emergency gall bladder surgery the evening before. She sent me to the show nonetheless (well, visiting hours were over). I went to the venue very early so I could try sell her ticket and managed to sell it pretty quickly. The woman who bought it was about my age and seemed relatively normal, so while we were waiting to get in we struck up a conversation. And what a conversation it was. Over some navel oranges she'd brought with her we discussed BF of course, but we also found out we'd had a lot more in common. We'd both had childhood crushes on Mark Spitz, we'd both religiously watched The Mike Douglas Show, as well as a number of other coincidences that are not as easily revealed in this forum. After the show we went out for a few drinks. It was very late, or very early--depending on your perspective--when we finally, and extremely reluctantly, parted company. Tina and I vowed we'd stay in touch. And we did. Letters and phone calls at first, and then email when we both got online. Visits when I could get back to NYC (and sneak away from the eagle eye of Miss W--doing academic research is a fantastic excuse for long periods of being incommunicado during the day). And an inspired exchange of gifts when the spirit moved us. I can still remember the thrill of getting home and seeing a package addressed in her careful script waiting for me. Then, 2 Christmases ago, no package from her. Since we didn't "officially" exchange gifts on Christmas, I wasn't too worried, but it was the first time she'd missed that date. Then, a few days into the New Year, I came home to find a package addressed to me in an unfamiliar script. I opened it to find my last package to her, still unwrapped, and a letter from her sister Tammy, whom I'd never met and who had just learned about my existence. Tina had been killed two weeks before in a freak type of accident which could have only happened to her: her long wool scarf--one of her trademarks--had gotten caught in the axle of a cab, and she'd been strangled to death. My life changed when I met her at that Bryan Ferry concert. And it changed again years later when I lost my dear friend. But every time I hear the music, she lives again. Nice web sight. It's like an encylopedia of music. It has bio's on Roxy, Ferry, Eno,, Curved Air, Crimson, Fripp, Scott Walker and a lot of the bands talked about on this list. I read of a Walker/Sylvian colaberation that never materialized. Jas, great story on Parliment. I never new they formed in 1955...Jim Thanks I will visit the site. Yes the ORIGINAL Parliament formed in 1955 as a doo-wop group. Of course it took until the 70's and Geroge's linking with Funkadelic and later Bootsy, that they became more well known and popular. Yes Geroge Clinton is that old.
