On the one hand, we have the usual unlikely borrowings, the most effective from Wilbert Harrison and the Everlys. And as usual, these are powerful, strange and interesting- and often quite compelling. On the other hand, we have unlikely remakes of old Roxy Music material, much of it from the group's very first album. Although Ferry proves that he knows more about making records (and music) than he used to, the songs remain powerful, strange and interesting- but not quite compelling. Add it all together and you get...two separate parts. I thought it was left quite vague as to what happened after the writer realized that she had fallen hook, line and stinker. Maybe there was a torrid affair, maybe not but who wrote that it was unrequited? I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. > Not even Arnie. yikes. but you still come to the front with a contest. qualifies you for some sort of war medal.... anyway, here's my $0.02. i came to new orleans in the summer of 1984 to visit my former college roommate, who was now in law school, and to kill six weeks before (hopefully) starting medical school. the second or third day i was in town i met a (female) member of his study group; we began dating immediately. after a couple of dates she came by our apartment and noticed my record collection (which, in true bachelor fashion, took up several peach crates). i started playing songs for her, and after a few minutes put on 'all i want is you,' which she listened too rather dreamily.... then it segued into 'out of the blue.' as she listened to, and read, the lyrics, she asked whether if that song meant something in particular -- which it did. the rest is history. we were engaged that fall, married the next year, and have been together happily for twelve years -- and she still talks about the night i serenaded her. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Aug 1998 23:02:27 EDT From: Dawndalian@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: The Last Contest Victor, I dig on your slice of history and the place that Roxy Music holds there. I also got turned on to Roxy in 1984.... I was 17 years old, a freshman at USC in Los Angeles, and I had found myself surrounded by "musician types" in the biz.... While hanging out with them while they all worked at a local large studio in Hollyweird, I met 'someone' there..... We got on like a house on fire, despite our considerable age difference (he was 32)...And one night there after doing some Serious Partying (Love was not the only drug that was in abundance there...) he asked me, "Have you heard of Roxy Music?" Well, yes, I have but never knew the music at all. He showed me the first CD I ever saw, and the first RM CD (of course).....it was Avalon. Avalon.... oh..... hearing More Than This, even now, sends me back to that time. He played for me this new music in the dispatch office at this Large Studio....I soon became a fixture at this Place....My fondness for Roxy Music grew almost as fast as my love for this man. Soon we were inseparable and completely in love. Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry (among other Cool recording artists like Bowie, Oingo Boingo, Thomas Dolby, Peter Gabriel...) became the background soundtrack for our too brief (almost a year) time together. One thing that always touched me about this love affair is that this man, so much older than this now barely 18 year old (me) would not "consummate" our love until I told him that I loved him as he loved me. It took a month for me to reach that time... I wanted to be sure.... And when our time was at hand, we selected Avalon for the backdrop of our tender, but totally hot and passionate "mingling" of our bodies and souls. That is now history....a time long, long ago....now only memories. However, in the past 14 years I have shared Roxy Music with roomates, friends, and other lovers that followed. My husband has also grown to enjoy and expect Bryan Ferry's voice as our Bedroom Companion.... So, although this is not the Hottest story that I could have related to you (How 'bout that night of Siren?), it is certainly my favorite.....I know that we, as devotees of Roxy Music all have a special connection or memory(s)...How can I paint for you a accurate image so you can all visualize and see and feel what I feel? I guess this is the point where we, as readers, fill in the voids and Make Our Own Imagery. Looking forward to hearing your special Roxy moments....
