By transforming Dylan at at his most messianic into gripping high camp complete with sound effects (when the poet dies in the gutter the chorus gives forth with a cute groan), Ferry both undercuts the inflated idealism of the original and reaffirms its essential power. Along the way, he also establishes "It's My Party" as a protest song. And just in case we're getting an highfalutin ideas, the title track reminds us that pop is only, well, foolish things, many of which predate not only Andy Warhol but rock and roll itself. Any business owners here? I've only been one for a few years, but I may be able to clear up some of the confusion. First, some terminology: Assets = Total value of all your property Liquidity = Amount of cash you have available and they are very different things. I live in the US, so I can only knowlegdably (alleged) talk about how things would work here. The advantage of Bryan keeping his assets in a corporation would be a tax shelter. He would minimize or avoid paying taxes unless he cashed in (liquidated) some of the stock in his company. Then he would get hit big time. Chances are, if he does have 50 million quid, a great deal of it was earned on investments. Since the majority of the income in his career came in the 70s and early 80s, he may have stashed away say 10 million or so, which is now worth 50 million, meaning 80% of his wealth comes from capital gains. So 80% of what he takes out would be taxed at something like 90% in Britain. Under this scenario, his 50 million would only be worth 18 million if he cashed out. Furthermore, if he cashed even some of it out, he would no longer own all the stock in the company. On the other hand, if he bought his NY condo for say $5 million (I'm completely speculating) and sold it for $10 million, he would be taxed only on the 5 million dollar profit, and (quite possibly) only by the US at about 38%. Under this scenario, he would get 8.1 million in cash. To get that amount of cash from his corporation, he would have to take out about $29 million. So it would make complete sense to sell the condo. (Take notes; there will be a quiz later). What doesn't make sense from a U.S. perspective is that if he held all the stock in a company, it wouldn't be publicly traded. So the company's financial records would not be public information. However, Brits call private schools public and vice versa. They also drive on the wrong side of the road, and as previously mentioned, pay too much in taxes. On the other hand, the Brits have Bryan and Brian. The Yanks have Jerry Springer and Kenneth Starr. Advantage: Brits. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Jul 1998 14:02:00 -0700 From: WCampanello@levi.com Subject: [AVALON] sub-culture wars-sub-versive speech John Fohrman wrote: "On the other hand, the Brits have Bryan and Brian.
