In short, what Bryan Ferry has to say has never spoken very loud to this listener no matter how you break it down. So while others may mourn the nuance and conceptual integrity of "Stranded" and "Country Life" and "Siren", I get off on this compilation, which puts his dialectic on display in its most entertaining guises. What with all the popcraft and robot energy and campy asides- and genuine emotion and ideas- I was even inspired to listen to "A Song For Europe" from beginning to end. Found I could translate the French part. I'm a Roxy, Ferry fan since '76. On the Madness in my soul site I saw the lyrics of a song called The Way You Do. I heared that Ferry in april appeared on a Noel Coward Tribute album with a song called 'I'll see you again'. Is there anyone who can tell me moere about the songs and the album? Thanks, Han ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Jul 1998 14:16:55 EDT From: ASchulberg@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Roxy Reunion Covers In case Bryan and the boys do get back together and don't have enough new material and want to add a few cover tunes to their oldies mix, I submit the following: The Smithereens' "Drown In My Own Tears" and "Green Thoughts". And, I've been a long time proponent of having Bryan cover Eddie Floyd's "Knock On Wood". Arnie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Jul 1998 14:16:58 EDT From: ASchulberg@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Scott Walker I only gave it one listen and, in fairness to all of you will give it another try, but "Looking Back with Scott Walker" was a real shock. Here are the first two paragraphs from the inside liner notes: "The album you hold in your hand is a tiny fragment of history- a snapshot taken many years ago when its young star was only beginning to find his way through the turbulent waters of the music business. Within seven years hw would find himself walking on those waters, his every move scrutinised, his every recording a smash hit, his group's fan club boasting as many members- in Britain, at least,- as the Beatles. Back in 1957-58, when these 11 tracks were recorded, Scott Walker was a 16 year old wannabe who still used his given surname of Engel for the growing amount of studio time LA record producers were prepared to allow a stunningly good-looking boy with a precociously mature voice. Certainly, on the evidence presented here, the only thing which stopped the young Scott from being a serious contender in competition with the many teen idols who then littered the pop charts was the mischievious madam called Lady Luck." Bottom line, so far, sounds like Cliff Richard (or is it Cliff Richards?) or a million other late '50s teen idols. One great couplet: "All the way to Albequerque/I'll be feeling mighty perky." I think Fender Rhodes was used on songs like "You go to My Head", "Sea Breezes" and "Could it Happen to Me?". It has more of a twinkling bell like sound. "EOY" intro has more grit.
