I can only think of one other (o/t Shakey's Sonnet for Diana Trubute Dance with Life and Crazy Love) - Is Your Love Strong Enough? (Legend) - are there any others? Michael ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 21:17:06 +0100 From: Bahi Para Subject: [AVALON] Velvet Goldmine review Short pre-release review of Todd Haynes' long-awaited Velvet Goldmine. ======= Velvet Goldmine (Todd Haynes, US/UK) Some found this music-driven paean to a fictional UK glam rock-star increasingly incoherent but Hanyes' narrative was all the more powerful for its inference over explanation. The story stiches well-known episodes from the lives of Bowie, Iggy, Enbo, Bryan Ferry, Marc Bolan, and Lou Reed into a startling and gorgeous new fabric. Structured knowingly like Citizen Kane, with a present-day writer digging into a past enigman, Velvet Goldmine gets the early 70s mood of hesitant sexual experiment in Britain right, as well as the clothes. ======= Appeared in the July issue of Sight and Sound, in an article by Nick James and Jonathen Rommey about Cannes screenings. Not intended as a substitute for the full review, which will follow release of the film, says the article. And that's about all - its existance may have been triggered by the loss of the roxmusic.com domain and the construction of the official Roxy site, but Ferry's domain registration went through a completely different route. (Surprise! Not.) It was registered for Ferry's current UK management (David "EG" Enthoven's IE Music). Details were last updated by someone called Andy Slade, at NetMatters. No apparent link to the Web Construction Company, who hold the Roxy and Eno domains and are working with Phil. There are possibly lots of registered variations of these domains...to check out registration details for co.uk sites, visit , the UK equivalent of the Internic folks. It was an interview when he was wearing the Boys and Girls outfit i.e. black suit, white shirt with top button don up, no tie. BF was smoking throughout the interview. There was a clip from the filming of Is Your Love Strong Enough? Well does anyone have it in a form which could be taped to another video tape? I had it and have lost it/erased it by mistake. It was a very interesting interview. There was another interview that I saw on Virgin Atlantic from NY to London about two years ago. Does anyone have this? Or any other interviews? Maybe we can organise to put them all together? It was remixed in the 80s (and lost that great, dry, closet-like sound you get on the rest of the album) and released in '85 on the Windswept EP. I think the film you're thinking of is "She's Having a Baby". (Could be wrong.) >Also, what other films/soundtracks did BF record a song for that did not >come from an existing album? "Help Me" for The Fly. US-only release, eventully appeared on the Ultimate Collection. [...] Well does anyone have it in a form > which could be taped to another video tape? I have it somewhere but won't be able to organise a copy in the next few months. (It's nowhere near my current home.) It was originally a Whistle Test Special programme by Richard Skinner, part of a weekly series broadcast just after Strong Enough was released. Each episode was about a different artist. The Ferry program was re-shown on the RATC thing some time later. My 1st copy had disintegrated by then so I retaped it. > any other interviews? A short clip of an uncredited, Mamouna-period interview. I get the impression it was supposed to have been a similar, high-profile Richard Skinner thing but was shown on some late-night ITV program, the name of which I've forgotten. A slightly odd slot and format, maybe due to the poor chart performance you've mentioned. It included a clip of Your Painted Smile and an amusing interview with David Williams, Ferry's rhythm guitarist. Had a clip of a live TV performance of Mamouna and Jealous Guy ('94) but lost it. It was from the Danny Baker show. A copy of "This is Tomorrow", a programme about Richard Hamilton and pop art, with Ferry talking about Hamilton, Hamilton talking about his work and (briefly) about Ferry. Could organise an exchange of all this stuff but not this year - I'll be able to retreive it all in January by which time you'll probably have sourced it elsewhere. If not, remind me. It's all PAL VHS but I could probably convert it. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 16:15:22 EDT From: Lizard4663@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Hi Hi, I just subscribed, my name is Liz. You guys hit this one on the head. One of the records is off center. The previous owner modify the hole to make it center. Still doesn't sound right. Everything sounds like it has reverb on it. It says Stockholm, Sweeded 1982. The song list doesn't even match the order they appear. On the upside it gave me a chance to hear Roxy early in the "Avalon" tour. Not as bouncy, and this mix had more guitar than on High Road/HSB. Also on the playable record is a great version of "Take A Chance with Me", one of my favorites from "Avalon". ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Jul 1998 00:10:01 -0400 From: jspellma@techadvisers.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Mellotrons On Thu, 23 Jul 1998 ASchulberg@aol.com wrote: > P.S. Nothing compares to the EJ versions, but I thought "Out of the Blue" was one of the highlights from the "Mamouna" tour. It was like the 3rd song in. Chester Kamen blew me away.
