Side one surrounds two pained, strained torch jobs with two classic neo-rockers and finishes with a song about an inflatable sex doll that's almost not stupid (title: "In Every Dream Home a Heartache"). Side two surrounds a fast fast one with two long mostly instrumental slow ones that are almost not boring. Verdict: almost not not bad. [Later on Atco]. Hi fellow Avalonians An idea...putting together some of BF's interesting remarks in interviews and the like...here are a few to start us off.. "Whatever you do in life always comes back to you. If you try to be a good person it comes back to you, and if you slap the world in the face you'll get slapped back....you've got to put something into life to get something out" "I am a master of disguise as you well know" "I'm a married man with children. My lifestyle doesn't really fit in with touring but I think I've missed it. I think my work's missed it...Please tell me I'm right because I'm committed to it now!" "Have you been in therapy?" "Er, yes, I have been, but not, like, every day. Once a week" "And is it any good?" "Yes it is. Whether it's worth the money or not, I'm not sure. But it wasn't because I thought I was going mad or anything like that...For me I don't think I have a problem. Perhaps I do? I don't know" "The next recording, I've decided, is going to feature me, a microphone and an acoustic guitar" (1985) "Can you play the guitar?" "Not really" "What film role could you imagine yourself playing?" "I wouldn't mind the porn version of James Bond, upon consideration" "I'm a tremedously private person. I can be very secretive when I want to be" So there we go to start...what else??? OK, but I think we should include some of Jeri Hall's too, like this: And I started telling everyone the story about how I'd been girls' champion leg wrestler back in Mesquite. And I'm doing this leg wrestlin' and being real loud-mannered and, you know, hootin' and hollerin'', and all these people were like eggin' me on. or He used to have this little mannerism with his ear. There's a cartilage in your ear and some people have it in a certain shape where they can just flip it back and forth. Bryan did and he used to sit there and do that and just look off into space. He'd be in a deep reverie. or this Once Bryan said I wasn't an English rose but a Texas rose. I thought that was so sweet. All from her book, "Tal Tales." I would love to read this book but I can't find it anywhere! I've looked in Toronto, Chicago, Berkeley, and the web. Who's this Christgau geezer? He needs to sort himself out. Yes ,that is a real Drag Queen on the cover ( I think it's Amanda Lear). Eno as a Enuch lookalike? Well he DID have camp it up a bit didn't he, but it was the music that was the message. As for Christgau, I have read some of his reviews over the years and for the most part agreed with him-not on this one of course. He seems "old" because he wrote the review when the album came out which was well over 25 years ago. I think those of us who are Roxy fans from that time, me included, are a little bit older too but certainly not geezers. While working within his standard darkly dance-oriented, Ferry incorporates several new touches -- namely, several psuedo-world music touches. None of it would have worked if Ferry hadn't blended them in so seamlessly with his stylish pop, which hasn't dated in the seven years that he's been away. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Copyright © All Music Guide LOL... ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V3 #173 **************************** ======================================================================== Please send any questions or comments about the list to avalon-digest-owner@smoe.org
