Saw them at the (then) Tower Theater in Houston. Smoked a J a friend gave me just before the concert. Don't know with what it was laced, but not only was I in orbit, the entire night my vision was rotated 180 degrees. Everything was in perfect focus, just upside down. Verrrrrry weird. A band from Athens, GA called the Method Actor opened - they were awesome; or at least seemed to be through my doors of perception that given night. Never heard of them again. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Jul 1998 08:22:25 -0500 From: "Sara Kerr" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Music recommendation needed! Hi - Do any of you guys like Semisonic? Granted they have a big US College radio hit / or is it "alt rock" hit...Anyway, the 2nd single to be released is fabulous: "Singing in My Sleep." It's about a long distance relationship carried out via a mix tape. It's a very dreamy, poetic kind of song -- it's not like RM, although I would bet that BF would like it. Hope that makes sense! They used to be called "Trip Shakespeare" in the mid 80's in Minneapolis, and they were great then. If you ever see them playing, try and catch a show. I think they are the best band I've ever seen live...I USED to think that the best show that I'd ever seen was U2 on New Year's Eve 1989 in Dublin (which was an incredible show and was broadcast all over Europe), but after seeing Semisonic in a few local (ie small) venues I've changed my mind. They're touring all summer in the US (all of August with Soul Asylum - -- another favorite band of mine), the dates can be found at their website: http://www.semisonic.com/ Sara PS I think we need another contest...How about recommendations for the ULTIMATE MIX TAPE? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Jul 1998 17:05:11 -0400 From: jspellma@techadvisers.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Minor League... They were very ecclectic. I have two tapes of them from a former roommate and have played them periodically over the years. I liked the fact that Sara Lee was in the band. She was briefly in Gang of Four ( a great, great band) and is now touring with the B-52's. Jas Is that Sara Lee on the new single "Debbie"? It sounds much like the "Cosmic Thing" album. I saw them in 89'. They were wonderful. The rhythm section was so cool with Sara on bass and Zac Alford on drums. He was on last years Bowie tour. I never heard of League but I really liked Gang of Four. The song list is far different then the Roxy Live Vol 1. Yes it is the "Concert Classics" on Ranch Life UK, recorded in Denver 1979. I was hesitant to buy it after reading what you read in Q. These live albums are hit or miss. I'm listening to it now. As far as "lousy quality" I think the quality is really good, much clearer than Viva. The only thing I've noticed is the sax is just a little too soft the first few songs. "Out of the Blue" and "Strand" are great, different than the other versions I've heard. "Angel Eyes" (orig. ver.!) and "Trash" really kick. Well worth the $20.
