I've never noticed, what BF songs are you comparing to? I have noticed that some tracks from Ziggy Stardust like "Hang on to Yourself" sound a lot like Roxy's "For Your Pleasure" album, or is it the other way around. I also hear shades of Bowie's "Low" album, especially the side 2 instrumentals, in Ferry's solo work in the 80's. I find "NewTown" sounds a little like " Art Decade". There is another song from "Low" that reminds me of "Boys and Girls" in one spot, it's just a particular noise. They must have been fans of each others music. I recently bought "Tin Machine Live" for 99cents in the cassette cut out bin. It's a little too self indulgent for me although they open up with a pretty good cover of Roxy's "If There Is Something". ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Jul 98 15:39:44 UT From: "Robert Fedder" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Ferry - UK TV Appearance Weds 8 July Maybe he's decided to laugh at himself again - 25 years on from his sense of humour collapse. - ---------- Steve said: The format of this (live) show is that the two front men review the evening's football and talk with the studio guest about same. A 5-star CD definitely. Sad thing >is the CD is out-of-print in US. Looking forward to the recommendations! Hi; I definitely agree with many of the recommendations made by some of the others on this list, in particular; Nick Lowe-"Dig My Mood" Mark Hollis-"Mark Hollis" Scott Walker-"Tilt" Neil Finn-"Try Whistling This" Massive Attack-"Mezzanine" any Gavin Friday are all excellent. Here is what has made a strong impression on me for the first half of '98; Bruford/Levin's Upper Extremities-King Crimson side project. Doesn't seem to be getting as much attention as the Fripp-Belew-Gunn ProjeKCt Two, but I like this better. As a guitar player, David Torn is pretty hard to beat, in my book, and he is in top form with one of the best rhythm sections (a totally inadequate term in this case) around, and a sharp jazz trumpeter (Chris Botti) to boot. Pulp-"This is Hardcore"-Why more Roxy fans aren't picking up on these guys is beyond me. They update much of what Roxy was up to as well as anyone around. They don't have any soloists on the level of Manzanera, Mackay or Jobson, but instead have a powerful ensemble approach and Jarvis Cocker is an excellent singer/lyricist. Chris Thomas produced. Sixteen Horsepower-"Low Estate"-Appalachian Gothic. They incorporate fiddles, accordions and banjos into their rock band instrumentation to great effect. The singer at times seems to be channeling the late Jeffrey Lee Pierce (Gun Club) and has the best whoop/howl since Iggy in his prime. Working some of the same twisted pentecostal ground as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds at times. Jeff Buckley-"Sketches for My Sweethheart the Drunk"-No way could anything live up to the level of anticipation I had for this and it doesn't. I think "Grace" was one of the 2 or 3 best of the decade (along with "Mamouna"). Unfinished and occasionally fairly ragged, it still points up what a incredible loss his death was and gives a pretty vivid glimpse of the album he would have ultimately delivered, had he had the chance. And it's still a damn sight better than 90% of what's out there anyway. Marc Ribot Y Los Cubanos Postizos-(the Prosthetic Cubans)-All but 2 tracks are compositions by the late Cuban guitarist/bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez. Jazz(John Zorn)/Rock(Tom Waits/Elvis Costello) guitarist Ribot works with a small combo and turns in a passionate, heartfelt recording that is loaded with excellent guitar work. Simple Minds-"Neapolis"-Unreleased in the US (apparently it wasn't what their record company was looking for), it finds them returning to a more "European" approach. Very densely textured and layered production work. It also finds some former members returning to the fold to good effect. Miles Davis-"Panthalassa"-"A modern mix translation and reconstruction by producer Bill Laswell features newly restored performances and never-before-heard extended themes from "In a Silent Way", "On the Corner", and "Get Up With It", all taken from the original multi-track tapes" is what the sticker on the cd says. Electric Miles ('67-'75) gets remade/remodeled (relatively subtly at that). Some of the greatest music ever made, IMHO. Pere Ubu-"Pennsylvania"-They still got it. America's premiere avant/garage band is in fine form. Guitarist Tom Herman is back. If you never liked 'em this won't likely change your mind, but I think it's excellent. Arcana-"Arc of the Testimony"-Bassist/Producer Bill Laswell teams up for the final time with late jazz legend, drummer Tony Williams for an album of where jazz/rock fusion SHOULD have gone. Former Coltrane compatriot Pharoah Sanders and avant/metal speed guitarist Buckethead among others, contribute stellar performances. Beauty, Passion, Intensity. It's all there. That's a cross section of what I have found to be exceptional so far this year. Not a lot of it has a direct (or even oblique) Roxy reference, but I find most Roxy/BF fans to have fairly wide ranging tastes, so maybe someone will agree with something here. I got more long-winded than I intended to, as is usually par for the course. Sorry. They were great live too. I liked the first two albums the best. They changed their line up quite a few times. It was Ian McDonald that was in Crimson but I think he was a horn player. I still think the guitar solo in Hot Blooded is one of the best. Mick Jones was my favorite. There was a Mick Jones in the Clash as well, right? Can anybody think of any other musicians with the same first and last names?
