If every musical performer of the early seventies was categorized as a "gender bender" due to the fact that they wore make up, there would be precious few in the heterosexual category. Bowie was the only real gender bender as such. Everyone else (including our heroes) were following the trend. I am happy that our guys got out of it by the second album. It was a gimmick, pure and simple, by their own admission. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jun 1998 02:26:53 PDT From: "Heather Drain" Subject: [AVALON] well ooops! >What qualifies Brian Eno as a gender bender?? I think he might be offended by that >suggestion. goodness, didn't mean to offend anyone, especially eno, i didn't classify him as "gender-bending" just because he wore make up, i classified him as such, because {at least during the "for your pleasure" album} he looked beautifully feminine...to me that's certainly not a bad thing at all, and agreeably still he still had some masucline traits there....to me eno took things such as make up and feathers, and made it very stylish and quite interesting...i certainly was not using the phrase in some trendy manner, and just because someone is classified as a "gender bender" does not automatically mean they are homosexual just as it means if someone dresses typical of their own gender they are automatically hetero, appearances can be decieving but then again, classifications are silly, so i apologize for that or any offense i might of caused, the coffee obviously hadn't kicked in at that point yours truly, heather If every musical performer of the early seventies was categorized as a "gender >bender" due to the fact that they wore make up, there would be precious few in the >heterosexual category. > >Bowie was the only real gender bender as such. Just imagine the possibilibities- The opening of the school year,Parents Day, sleep overs, birthdays, recitals, starting a band!!!,etc. The press would have a field day possibly even leaving Prince Harry alone for a change. Keep us posted Jas (Chicago- Yes home of the Chicago Bulls!) About 10 years ago when I lived in the city I had the experience of getting to know some kids of famous musicians. David Sanborn?s son Jonathan, a bass player, Quincy Jones? son Quincy III, a hip-hop producer, and Donny Hathaway's daughter Layla, a singer. They were all very good musicians and nice people. Certainly more polite than most. The thing was, there seemed to be this melancholy cloud of expectation and pressure hanging over their heads most of the time. I was never happier than to be a poor unknown slob with minimal success being more than what's expected. Being the kid of a famous person must be difficult. They just wont leave the royal children alone. Hard Copy would do a special on Prince William on TV that reports the fact that he needs to be left alone until a certain age (16?), and then they proceed to show clips of him and keep bugging him and filming him just trying to live his life. What's my point? My vote is to just keep the kids out of it. If they go out and do something that calls for the attention, then great. But otherwise give them a break. I love hearing about the music, the guy who sang it, the people who played it , what they went on to do, the people they all played with and produced and influenced and so on. For me, reading about Lucy and the kids is about as relevant to the music as the Chicago Bulls. Nobody asked, just one guys opinion. Besides, when Johansen veered into that mindless Buster Poindexter persona, well, that just about shows the depths some people will sink to make a name for themselves. He had more respect as a washed up has-been, well, from me anyway. Just my 2 cents, of course. The Ferryphiles seem to be in a lull lately. By the way, with regard to my statement about merlin vs The Merlin; although I am no mythologist, I am an avid student of the Grail and all things related. In that quest for knowledge, I came across a recently published book by Laurence Gardner titled The Bloodline of the Grail. Said book has a foreward by Prince Michael of Albany. Mr. Gardner has the title of "The Chevalier Labhran de St. Germain" I don't know if such title and foreward attests to the authority of the author on the subject matter, but it sure sounds impressive. Anyway, on page 191, Mr. Gardner writes: "The title 'Merlin" - The Seer to the King - was long established in Druidic tradition. Prior to Emrys, the appointed Merlin was Taliesin the Bard, husband of Viviane I del Acqs. At his death in 540, the Merlin title passed to Emrys of Powys, who was the famous Merlin of Arthurian tradition..."
