I saw Eddie a few times through his last concerts with UK. His "clear" violin was basically a plexiglass appearing neck that ran down to his chin. The rest of the violin, the resonating body, was simply not there. What was there was the skeletal outline of where the rest of the violin in metal. This made it a truly electronic violin. The pickups only heard the string's vibrations, no resonance. Did he switch to a violin with a plexiglass BODY later? I sort of doubt it. I expect the light reflection was off the neck of the violin, or the metal skeleton. BTW: I know Eddie is doing TV themes, etc. these days, but why on Earth doesn't he record anymore? Apparently he is going to release an album soon? I know he was royally ticked off that he was never allowed to do the "Pink" album, but can anyone really say they liked the "Green" album? It was sadly like the repetitive mainstream drivel UK were doing live (never recorded) just before they split. I remember Eddie doing that stuff live on stage in London and really wanting to know what the audience thought of it. I didn't know how to respond! I respected him too much to gag myself. Certainly the two albums for Private Music were brilliant and beautiful, contrasting what I expect was just an experiment in MOR. I really miss his work, a lot!! :-Derek Derek Currie, derekc@frontiernet.net ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Jun 1998 15:37:41 -0000 From: "Decophile" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Sadistic Mika Band. - -----Original Message----- From: M.R.Humphrey To: avalon@smoe.org Date: Thursday, June 11, 1998 2:24 PM Subject: [AVALON] Sadistic Mika Band. >ochiai-san wrote............. > >> Yukihiro was also member of Sadistic Mika Band from 1972 to 1975. > >> Does anyone seen SMB on 1975 UK Tour? > >I saw the open for Roxy at the Liverpool Empire in '75, and I >remember them going down really well with the Roxy audience. > >I can remember going out and buying their "Hot Menu" album the >next day and seem to recall them having some success that year with a >single from that album (Funkee Mahjong ?). > Jeeeez! OTOH, bill nelson (formerly of be bop deluxe, a fairly good roxyish band) has churned out gazillions of discs on some obscure private labels. don't see how he makes any money at all on it, but then i haven't listened to anything of his in a decade or more. it seems to me that if he could find an outlet for his stuff, then so could jobson, if he were truly interested. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Jun 1998 22:17:47 +0200 From: Per Stade Subject: Re: [AVALON] So, Who Wants A Copy? When it come right down to it, I don't think the 90's had the proper "zeitgeist" for Roxy Music, compared to the 70's and 80's, which were what they were all about. I mean, can you imagine Roxy Music singing about recycling or safe sex? I think they could write some interesting stuff on the Internet once it really starts to define the "spirit of the era" and seep into people's consicousness. What is it about Ferry's vocals on that song that is so perfect for the lyrics? Like when he sings, "Or is it cocaine," he just sounds so, I don't know, provocative. You're right, that album is wonderful. Like the best of them (For Your Pleasure, Siren) it seems to span human consciousness, from the cavalier decadence of "The Thrill of It All" or "A Really Good Time," to the self consciouness of "Bittersweet" or "Casanova," to the downright guilt of "Triptych" (I imagine him in church the morning after a wild party wondering how he could have let himself come to this, like Madame Bovary. I've only really heard Here Come The Warm Jets and Another Green World, and find the former more accessible - it's got far too many first-rate, left-field pop songs to list here (although Dead Finks Don't Talk is worth mentioning for Eno's hilarious Ferry impersonation), with some wonderful lyrics. I'm so glad that somone else heard Eno's dig at Bryan. I'm sure he was smarting from being dismissed from Roxy. It took me a while to get it, but one day it sunk in. He also got a dig at Bryan by having most of the Roxy band on this release which means that THEY did not have problem with HIM. It's kind of like a quirker, low-fi version of early Roxy, I suppose - Mackay, Manzanera and Thompson all appear on it. Another Green World is a bit more abstract, but still well worth checking out - it's more mellow than Warm Jets, with some really nice songs (St Elmo's Fire was recently covered by Stereolab), and some more ambient stuff of the type he's since become known for, including the title track, which is now better known as the theme tune to Arena. Lots of guest stars too - Robert Fripp and Phil Collins, to name but the two I can remember. Thanks for mentioning thiis realease. I like it just for the fact that it was very different AND the fact that it contained Baby's On Fire. It still remains my favorite Eno song. If you want to ambient music before it called ambient music, then you should listen to No Pussyfooting. It is just Eno and Robert Fripp and a tape machine. I use to meditate to the Heavenly Music Corporation in the background. I have a tape of that and Swastika Girls that I listen to when I take plane rides. Nothing beats looking down thru the clouds while listening to those songs on headphones (plus a glass of wine). I trip every time I fly....
