Think of Roxy albums 2-5; they all open with fierce rocking numbers that make you sit up and pay attention. "Jealous Guy", while it may be one of Lennon's solo highlights, is just too "soft" as an opener. My vote for the opener is the incomparable "The Thrill of It All". Of all the lineups I've heard, Roxy opening for Zappa is the most justifiable. My favorite mismatch was the time Emerson, Lake and Palmer, on their initial tour, opened for Procol Harum. Everyone went nuts during the ELP set and were so wiped out that people were passed out in their seats when Procol Harum came on. Many people just left after ELP, figuring that nothing could top that. And they were right. And how I wish I'd had tickets for Frejus that night. My two favorite bands in the world in the same venue. I'll have to see if I can find out who was the opening act. I would agree with you but you know those French, Vive la Roxy. Maybe Bryan and Company headlined. I'll ask around. I know too many people on the list who`ve wasted their money on those over priced, horrible quality "Funky Chick" and "For Europeans" boot cd`s, among others. Here`s your chance to get a near flawless copy of this great Roxy show. If this works out, I`ll restore other Roxy shows. The only cost is either a blank cassette or blank CD-R media that you mail along with shipping cost (postage and cost of the shipping package). Your recording will be made and shipped to you. We`ll figure who`ll make what for who later. This thing is just getting off the ground now, so it could be a couple of weeks before the master copies are sent out. I`ll post to the Avalon list when everything is set to go. Arnie ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 May 1998 04:20:09 EDT From: Dawndalian@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Bryan Ferry Meets Mighty Aphrodite So, where did we leave off in Athens??? Oh, yes....Last we were in the Lobby of the Grand Bretagne Hotel in Athens, the hot summer's twilight upon us....Bryan and I having just left our shared Taxi ride to the hotel...Bryan and I exchanged pleasantries, and although I wanted to exchange much more with this man, I knew this would not be the last time we would meet... If it is one thing I have learned, it is to Make Things Happen... and I was not about to let this opportunity slip away from me. The bellboy does as I ask (in Greek, of course, friends!), and my luggage ends up in Bryan's room, and mine in his.... As the Fates would have it, we were at least on the same Hotel floor... So,. about 10 minutes later, there is a knock on my door... it is the Bellboy (he got the drachmas and cigs from me) with Bryan! Now, I gotta ask myself, "Here is the man of my dreams, in MY room... now what do I do with him??" I decide to just go with it, after all I have nothing to lose here....It is time to shake any apprehension... we talk a bit more, and he tells me that his plans have changed for the evening and since I knew Athens quite well, if I would not mind having a dinner companion....My heart leaps in my chest... I try to maintain cool here, and agree to show him Athens, which I pretty much have in my back pocket by now..... But first, I must call up the cousins and somehow back out of my plans with them. I lamented to them about how tired I was and that going out tonight just can't happen. They are cool, unlike the Older Relatives, who load on the Guilt Complex if you don't do the Family Thing All The Time.... So the night is ours, for the taking..... I am free to roam the streets with this man, Bryan. As I hang up the phone and look at him, standing near the window, peering out into the street below....shifting his weight as he lights another cigarette....He turns, walks toward me and hands it to me, saying, "Dawne, I have a feeling we will need to stock up on some more cigarettes for the evening, don't you?" He looks at me with this knowing look... this gaze that just melts any remaining apprehension I had lingering inside me.The look in his eyes tell me all I need to know. I am feeling that vibration in the air, that connection you feel when there is an undeniable sexual tension... start to get a little nervous...the kind of nervousness you feel with a new lover....Desire smolders below the surface... You both know where this is leading. There is a strange comfort in knowing the object of your desire is burning inside for you....I am beginning to realise that this is not a game, this is not a dream, He is standing here with me, and things I have only dreamed of could actually happen this night..... I begin to go through my luggage, looking for something to wear this evening.... I lay out some dresses on the bed, and ask Bryan if he would not mind waiting a bit while I shower and freshen up. He likes the idea for himself and excuses himself to return to his room, with his things and we agree to meet back here in 30 minutes. I luxuriate in the floor-to-ceiling marble bathroom, my legs are smooth-as- silk shaved, and I slather on the Versace Blonde lotion and douse my body with the Blonde perfume.....I quickly apply my make-up and throw on some cool jewelry and every girl's Must Have, the Little Black Dress, a sure hit. Bryan arrives back at my room right about then, and he is glowingly handsome, his black hair slicked and side-parted....He is sporting a beautiful white pressed shirt, so smooth and fine (must be a 310-thread-count!) with French cuffs, and irridescent black slacks, and of course, another cigarette... Beneath the tobacco smoke, there was the faint scent of Burberry's Cologne on.... We look at each other admiringly, and we head out the door, and I sense us both feeling a bit nervous, like a couple of teenagers going out to the Prom. Our gait is light, and as I look at Bryan in the elevator, I can tell he is eager and energized for whatever lies ahead. The street is noisy with traffic and diesel buses. Taxis crowd the curb outside the hotel, and there is a constant stream of activity as atheletes and spectators return from the day of Olympics.... We break through the glut and head to Plaka, the oldest and most colourful little neighbourhood in downtown Athens... It lies directly below the slopes of the Acropolis. I glance at Bryan and he is soaking it all in... the sights and smells.... At last we find ourselves in the middle of the action. I read a few menus outside the tavernas....none of it is new to me, but Bryan seems to like the look of some of the dishes so we decide to stay and dine here and dig the live music....And I can't resist the Greek dancing.... the music, so sensuous, so pulsating, we both succomb and work up a sweat, dancing.... After a few rounds, we exit the worn, tiled floor of the taverna. We laugh, we embrace and we cannot stop tallking to each other! We just "get on" like a house on fire....Neither of us want the night to end... But before we leave, I tell him he must try Greek yogurt and honey.....It is plain, creamy-white and more delicious than anything you will find ANYWHERE. I order it up, in Greek of course, with a bowl of honey on the side.... And then, I take the spoon, full of yogurt and honey and feed my lovely companion.... There is a bit of honey on the corner of Bryan's mouth, and and lean towards him and gently lick it off....and then, without moving, I look into his dreamy eyes....for a moment, neither of us move.... then I slowly back away, and neither of us say a word. I continue to spoon-feed him....slowly, deliberately....Then he takes the spoon form me and feeds me the rest of the yogurt.... I arch my back a bit, and lean into him, putting my chin up and opening my mouth.... I close my eyes and let out a little sigh as I swallow the creamy smoothness. Bryan exhales, takes a drink of the ice water with his other hand. His hand, wet from the glass, gently brushes a bit of sweaty hair from my face. He caresses my face and I reach to hold his hand there, still, on my cheek. ... He whispers softly, " Dawne, I think it is time for us to go...." Without a word, we both get up, he pays the bill, and we head back to the hotel, winding through Plaka's narrow streets.... The nightlife is just beginning here, as the music is pumping out of several clubs now , and more and more young people looking for a good time are filling the streets. A taxi cab comes speeding around a corner, and as I am just about to step in the street, Bryan's arm blocks me. We shout obscenities at this Brain Donor- of-a-cab-driver and continue onward. We reach a busy intersection and while we wait for the light to turn green, Bryan turns to me and takes my hand, gently in his, and kisses it. "Thank you, my little Greek Goddess, for showing me around tonight. I never thought I'd enjoy yogurt that much!" "Well," I said, "The night is still young... isn't there any other place you want to see tonight?" Duh... I was getting nervous again.... He goes, "Let's just see what develops...." "I know my place is here with you..." Okay, I have come up for Air, Avalonians.... Having just heard it (it comes out Tuesday), I can report that "More Than This" by the Cure is DEFINITELY NOT a Roxy cover, but rather a Cure song, written by Robert Smith. Very well done and all, but I was looking forward to hearing the Cure cover Roxy, and thus a bit disappointed. All they share is the same name and a certain dreamy ambience. Thanks Erik for the update. I guess I wont't be too disappointed by this. It would have been way cool for the Cure to cover Roxy-maybe they will in the future (hmm.... how about the Bogus Man or End of the Line??). They have covered others most notably Hendix (Purple Haze) and The Doors (Hello I love you) with very good results. I am a big Cure fan so I will look forward to hearing it. I have not followed the X-Files but will try to see the movie. Oh yes, It is good that X has reformed and has included Ray Manzarek on Crystal Ship. I remember seeing them in Chicago in 1982 and it was a vey explosive show. They are touring this summer and will play Chicago on mid-June as part of a big festival including Sinead O'Conner, Richard Thompson (another fave of mine), Tracy Chapman, Los Lobos (one of the best and underated) and Squeeze amongst others. Okay, here is the conclusion of ONE of my Fantasies.....Submitted for contest #77/78.... THIS IS FICTION (unfortunately....).... So Bryan and I continue back to the Bretagne.... He asks about monuments here and there....and seeing this as an opportunity, I seize the moment....."Well, I think you might enjoy the sites more during daylight hours....." Just as I had hoped, he says to me, "Maybe we could do something tomorrow...together." I smile at him, in quiet disbelief, and nod my head in agreement. "Yes, there is so much to see and do..." We enter the hotel and I see my favorite Concierge Man, Demitri.... we pick up our room keys, as it is the custom there to leave your hotel keys with the Concierge, and Bryan goes to fetch an elevator. I lean over the counter to Demitri and ask him to arrange to have room service immediately send up a fresh fruit and honey platter, along with a bottle of Perrier-Jouet Champagne, as I did not want to make a phone call from the room, I just wanted it to 'arrive' there soon...He agreed, "But of course, Kiria Dawne, right away!" The elevator arrives and Bryan holds the door for me and I sashay through the entrance. He comes in and it is just us two, alone. He stands in the corner of the elevator, facing out, with his hands resting on the brass rails, and his feet were crossed at his ankles..... He looks so devastatingly handsome, so debonaire at that moment, I could not resist the impulse to step closer to him...There, face to face, I take hold of his collar and pull him in close to me. He straightens up and I feel his strong hands on my arms, running down to the small of my back.... I run my hands along his chest, my long, polished fingernails a nice contrast to his white shirt. Then I imagine my blood-red nails and how they would look on his pale skin. I can hear in the soundtrack of my mind the song, "The 39 Steps," pounding in my head. He looks down at me, breathing a bit harder now, and we kiss, at first softly, but then, our lips press together harder......I can feel his excitement building..... The elevator stops at the 10th floor and we don't leave each other for a moment. While still kissing him, I back out of the elevator, pulling him with me, The 39 Steps still playing in my mind, only now, I can barely hear it.... We make it to my room, and while still in his arms, I nudge the door closed with the heel of my black suede pump. Now I am backing him towards the bed, which has already been turned down by the maid service. And fortunately, there was a CD player in this particular room, but because I always travel with one, I came prepared with a large assortment of tunes.....Bryan sits on the edge of the bed as I cue up the CD player... I decide on Delibes "Lakme,"a French opera, and oh-so very romantic. Bryan stands up and comes to unzip my black silk shantung dress, my body quivers at the feel of his hands on my skin. He slips the dress off my shoulders, kissing my neck, and I turn to face him. The dress falls to the floor and I step out from it....He looks at me and begins to unbutton his shirt, but I take his hands away and unbutton it for him.... I loosen his tie, and unfasten his cufflinks..... and I peel off his shirt and drop it behind him on the bed..... Oh but then an interruption breaks the pace.... It is Room Service with the tray of fruit and champagne....Clad only in my black lace bra and panties and my black stockings and garter, I slip into my silk Christian Dior robe and get the door. The table is wheeled in....the room service man leaves and we are alone again. I am standing next to the table here, with small, but elegantly-arranged fruit and the champagne bucket... I open the bottle and pour us both a glass.....I take a sip from the flute, and then another....mmmm... Bryan gets up and takes my hand and leads me to the bed, saying, "I am already drunk with lust for you, Dawne....let me drown in your pleasures...better than any wine...." He lays on the bed, and I straddle his body, both of us still partially dressed. We kiss, furiously, his hands running through my tousled blonde hair.... our faces and necks wet with kisses, and hot with passion. He moans as I kiss and lick his nipples, my hot mouth on his skin...He is breathing heavier now, in anticipation of what is to come...His body undulates under mine...and I feel him hard against my body. I wrap my arms around his back and pull his torso upright, still with my legs wrapped around him. We are locked in an embrace and he slips off my bra....He teases and fondles my breasts, and my blood is racing through my veins now... Bryan lays back on the pillows and is holding my waist as I am sitting up on top of him.....my back arches as we grind on each other.....and I fall again slowly on top of him....He still has his black slacks on, so I roll off of him to the side and he slips out of them.....I start to slip out of my garter and heels but he says, "Leave that on....you look incredibly sexy in those...but those pumps, well, one of us could get hurt with those on!" I said, "Hmm, maybe an idea for your next album cover, Bryan??" "Not a bad idea..."So off came the shoes...and everything else that was getting in our way.... We lay together, on our sides, facing each other, and the passion is building. I want him to take me, all of me... to dominate me. I want to please him....We kiss , those eager, wide-open-mouthed kisses, his tongue so deep and hard in my mouth....Our bodies find a rhythm together and I take him inside. The scent of our colognes has been overpowered now by the smell of sex and sweat...It is pure animal instinct propelling us forward....Our sweaty, throbbing bodies mingle as one....His nibbling on my shoulders and neck turns into soft bites....He is a very vocal and demonstrative lover...My soul is ecstactic. We both moan in pleasure and sigh and whisper each other's names....I thought he would be a gentle lover, but he was maddeningly passionate...so vigourous, such stamina........And then....then comes the bliss of a hunger satisfied... (Dim the lights, you can guess the rest..) Laying in each other's arms, basking in the glow, Bryan reaches for the cigarettes. There are only 3 left, and we had forgotten to pick some more up earlier in the evening. He lights up 2 and gently puts one in my mouth..... The Champagne and fruit were waiting for us to feast on them, so I got up and rolled the table close... Like a scene from the decadent Roman Empire days, I feed Bryan a cluster of juicy, red grapes.... we two wrapped up in the white bedsheets....we sip our bubbly and the champagne just goes to my head....meanwhile, the Lakme still floats in the air.... He stayed that night in my room, and I awake first, as I always have with my lovers.....and I watch him sleep... and breathe, still in such wonder that this man who I have idolised for years was in MY bed, in MY hotel room and nothing else on the planet Earth mattered but us.... He wakes, opening his dreamy eyes, and turns to me and we greet the morning together. I open the windowcoverings and show him the glorious view of the Parthenon atop the Acropolis....as he slips into his robe (you know, those nice hotel ones?)and wraps his arm around my waist and nuzzles into the nape of my neck, he whispers breathlessly, "Take me there, Dawne, after breakfast!" We bathe together in the enormous tub in the bathroom, and he returns to his room briefly for some new clothes. After a light breakfast and tea in one of the hotel's restaurants, we buy some more cigarettes and catch a cab to the base of the Acropolis (high city), and make the trek up the slippery marble slopes...We spend hours there, both of us looking so tremendously Hip and Cool in our Up-To-The-Minute sunglasses...smoking like crazy as all the European tourists seem to do...holding hands and marveling at the history and the magnitude that was ancient Greece. We chatter about the history and intrigue of ancient Athens.... We blow through a roll of film snapping photos like the tourists we were...walking along the ancient corridors, envisioning the battles that had taken place here, and all the Hero's Welcomes that this place has witnessed....and how it must have looked during its glorious days of Pericles...He especially seemed to enjoy the Porch of Maidens, the great temple where the columns are actually women instead of the classic Greek columns...And since he was once an art student, he could not miss the Archaeological Museum, which houses some of the greatest works of the ancient world....so we plan to spend a full day there (you really have to in order to soak it all in...), but my dear Avalonians, that is another story.....
