The tree structure will be posted as soon as Gene determines which leaves go to which branch. 2.) CD-R'd audio discs will play in a regular CD player. - --Don - -- Don Becker becker@panther.adelphi.edu Unix System Administrator, Adelphi University http://www.adelphi.edu/don "Deep down inside we're all one and the same" --Marillion, "The Last Straw" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 May 1998 08:18:02 -0500 From: "Sara Kerr" Subject: Re: [AVALON] So, Who Wants A Copy? Yes please. On tape from someone in the UK would probably be easier. 'Fraid I don't have anything too exciting myself - I've got the 1994 Radio 1 documentary The Bryan Ferry Story (three hours, interviews with virtually all the main players, snippets from the early Peel sessions), and a Wolverhampton concert from around Feb '94, taped from Radio 2 (!!!!). I caught the bassist's name as Melvin Lee Davis, by the way, and his bass solo in the middle of The 39 Steps makes me feel quite ill. That is all. From what I've read, the first album enjoyed instant success without even the release of a single. And then they released Virginia Plain a bit later and it was this super-huge mega big deal right? Well I dig the song VPlain, as well as a few parts of that first album, but it just doesn't seem all that commercial to me. VirginiaP is a groovy song and all, but it seems like the total 'un-single.' In that it almost has a hook, it almost has a chorus, but kind of transcends all the traditional poppy rules and regulations. So I'm wondering how Roxy actually caught on in their early days. Did the glam thing just appeal to a certain group of people or what? Were they exceptionally well marketed? Did Eno sell his soul to Satan? I don't doubt this has been chronicled or discussed before, but any opinions would be appreciated, 1960 Joey Trum (formerly Mr. Pleasant) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 May 1998 22:11:07 +0100 From: Peter Dewey Subject: [AVALON] Remake-remodel I noted that someone mentioned an article in the Sun last Tuesday regarding a reforming of the old group. I think glam was a reaction against the the anti-war/hippy movement that ruled the 60`s. It was for the most part decadent, gaudy, and theatracial. It was a great time for music and most of the top bands at that time dabbled in it to one degree or another. I saw them at the Lincoln Festival back in May 1972, and I think I am correct in saying that they were unheared of at that time, their debut album had just been released a few weeks before. Roxy came on stage early Sunday afternoon, hardly a primetime spot, but they proceeded to put on a performance that had the crowd on their feet. They were incredible. Within a matter of weeks Virginia Plain was released, they embarked on their first tour and the English music press was full of Roxy Music. VP became a big UK hit and tickets for their tour (played in small venues) became as rare as hen's teeth. And the rest, as they say, is history. Mick Humphrey. Toronto, Canada. Yes, it is I, the dreaded Vapor, back once again. So much has happened, my little friends--Cannes with Milla, a little Madrid sunshine with Bjork, a long, oh- so-restful restful monastery stay with Mr. (I call him Leonard) Cohen, not to mention the 14th Annual Vapor All-Star Celebrity Spankathon in Aspen. But enough about me. So much excitement at the same old Avalon scene: To birth or not to birth, the Very Controversial VH-1 Top 100, arm bands, who-opened-for-who-in-1972, our Texas Rose Mr Pleasant changing his name to the rather mysterious '1960 Joey Trum,' a very talkative new creature going by the monicker HipChimp (an Arnie alias, perhaps?), and some rather tasteless bashing of Kurt, ahem, Corbain, not to mention Our Great Child-Bearing Icon Jerry Hall (shame on Ms Matan, as a PAPTI official you should know better). Yes, no matter what far corners of the earth I traverse, I still hear those slinky sirens of Avalonia wail. Pure whiskey reeling round and around my brain, etc etc. But my heart, while still faintly beating, lies heavy with a question: What of Contest #77/78? In the Battle of the Avalonian Amazons, who will win? Ms. Dawndalian, of course, is the drug I'm thinking of. Has she succumbed to a Welles-like fear of finishing of her 'Night With Bryan' magnum opus? A simple case of Creatus Interruptus, perhaps? Maybe that customized, ready-made, heavy-metal-trick-or-treat-and-sporting-the-Fancy-Underpants, Odds-On-Favorita creaturia they call Heather Marie Propes seduced Dawndalian into premature silence via that odious affliction known as Friendship? Or is Ms D just Having Us On? Please Dawne, move your sweet fingers a little closer to the keyboard. The time has come, don't hesitate. After all, other contests await.
