(snip) your suggestion about where RM/BF fits is probably fair. the problem with such lists is that the criteria are seldom spelled out in advance so you get an apples to oranges problem. are we talking about longevity or peak achievement? (in other words, if we could graph an artist's career, would we be analyzing the highest point on the curve, or the total area under the curve?) based on longevity the stones surpass the beatles. based on peak performance it's the beatles. and on a peak performance scale buddy holly is probably second all-time. the nirvana/kinks comparison illustrates this problem too. are we measuring commercial success or creative influence? the velvet underground never sold a lot of albums in comparison to the popular bands of the time, but their creative influence is enormous. same could be said for chuck berry. OTOH if we're looking at commercial success then the bee gees deserve (ecch) a higher rank. RM/BF have never enjoyed enormous commercial success on this side of the atlantic but their creative impact is huge. and including non-rock artists like coltrane, cash, robert johnson and miles davis makes a comparison damn near impossible. if we're going to include them, then what about charlie parker? frank sinatra? glenn miller? duke ellington? the platters, drifters and coasters? hank williams sr.? louis armstrong? andres segovia? vladimir horowitz? george gershwin? cole porter? in the sake of brevity i'll stop now.... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 May 1998 11:03:37 EDT From: ASchulberg Subject: [AVALON] Roxy In Support << I am an avid Roxy Music fan since the spring of 1976 when I happened upon a concert where Roxy Music opened. >> Question: Who was the headliner? What's the basis here, sales? It can't be influence, 'cause without Elvis and Chuck Berry most, if not all, of these bands wouldn't have been created. I'm a Beatles fan and have no problem with them in the number one slot but some of this is just pure fabrication and nonsense. Why separate listings for Paul and John? Yeah, I know they had solo careers but I defy someone to tell me that McCartney's solo career was more influential or important than Frank Zappa's entire career. Paul Simon is on the list twice; is there that big a difference between his solo stuff and his work with Garfunkel? Sting AND the Police? What's the difference? Coltrane and Miles in the bottom half of the list? I love those guys and they should be listed higher but what the hell are they doing on a rock band list anyway? There are many more listings I could object to but you get the drift. This is one of the most worthless listings I've ever seen. Ignore it. I'm sure that Roxy never toured with anyone as an opening act, certainly not in the UK anyway, they were as far as I can remember one of the elite few that started their careers as headline arstists. I saw Roxy perform their first major live performance at the Lincolnshire Festival back in 1972, and again later that summer in their first tour, they were the headliners on each tour I saw them perform. However, the band picked to play Mardi Gras always played solo, but these bands are always headliners. (Peter Frampton played Mardi Gras in '76 and Boston in '77) I don`t think Roxy opened for anyone, in '75 anyway. I do remember Gary Wright playing in '76, but Roxy wasn`t with him. I suspect that since it was basically the same tour, they skipped N.O. in '76. Just out of curiosity, those of you who did see Roxy in '76, what kind of set did they do? Was it similar to the set done on the '76 Stockholm bootleg? The set I remember was a combination of the "Viva Live" and "Live in New York '75" boot. Also, they played without the "Sirens", something I found kind of odd given all the good press the '75 Roxy tour was getting in various Rock magazines. (and deadline for the doorprizes) Hi folks :-) Just wanted to again say thanx to all those that contributed to the fund raiser for the new smoe.org hardware :-) As Jeff Wasilko posted yesterday, over $3500 thus far has been sent in and he is installing a new $4600 system this weekend. Also, as he said I am still accepting donations towards this cause, as we did fall about a grand short of the final cost (not to mention Jeff pays the $150+ a month operating costs....so I myself wouldn't mind seeing us foot the whole bill for the hardware :-) Also, also - I'd like to announce that the deadline for me to receive donations where you would be eligible for one of the door prizes is next weekend, as I am going to randomly pick the winners next Sunday May 31st, meaning donations I receive in the mail by next Saturday the 30th will be eligible. No matter if you donated one dollar or two-hundred fifty dollars, you have an equal chance for any of the prizes. (All of the door prizes are Jewel related) In addition to a bunch of Jewel key chains & Jewel pins, I have the seven Jewel autographed items listed below (at the end of this email). These items were autographed by Jewel herself, not some stamp, not another person, not some machine. (People have been asking me if her presigned poetry books that are available at various Virgin Megastore bookstores around the USA were actually signed by her....that I cannot answer, as I don't have an answer) I might add that the odds of winning one of these autographed items isn't too bad, since as of this moment there's only been 145 donations sent in. So the odds right now are just a tad over 20-1. To donate, send cash, check or money order. PLEASE make out any checks or money orders to Jeff Wasilko. Send donations to: Mike Connell PO Box 1206 Binghamton NY 13902-1206 This is the last time I'll be ringing that bell :-) Again, I wish to thank all of you who have donated already, all who may soon do so, and all of you who belong to any smoe.org mailing list, as it is the people and their love of the artists' music that make these lists special :-) To see what artists mailing lists exist for on smoe.org, check out http://www.smoe.org/lists cybernetly yours, Mike :-) P.S. If you are new to any of these lists and want more info on this fund raiser, just email me privately and I'll send you copies of my previous posts, and/or answer any questions you may have. *************************************************************************** THE DOOR PRIZES THE DOOR PRIZES THE DOOR PRIZES *************************************************************************** (In addition to a bunch of Jewel key chains and pins) The seven autographed items are (each individually awarded) a) Two twenty page, full of pictures, full color Jewel lyric books autographed in gold ink on the front cover. These are the same books that were being sold at last summers' Lilith Fair and Jewel's 1997 Fall Tour. b) Two sets of five 5x7 semi-glossy color photo packs, with the first picture autographed in gold ink. The pictures and lyric book can be viewed here: http://www.jeweljk.com/catalog1164/catalog.htm c) TWO of Jewel's ten times platinum Pieces Of You CD, with the insert autographed in gold ink. d) This is the top prize, especially to the collectors out there! A brand spanking new autographed in gold ink, RARE promotional CD, commonly known as "Phyllis Barnaby Finally Gets A Bra". It's a 4 track "You Were Meant For Me" promo CD that is pretty much impossible to find now a days. In fact, I myself consider it harder to find than her other promo CD "Save The Linoleum". The 4 tracks are an unreleased version of You Were Meant For Me (known as the Juan Patino version), and three other unreleased tracks Cold Song, Rocker Girl and Emily (although all three have subsequently been released on the vinyl version of Pieces Of You) * The Patty Griffin/Mad-Mission@smoe List Homepage is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/pattyg.htm * * The Jewel EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * * aka DuckOfPrey@aol.com WhyADuck55 on AOL Instant Messenger ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 May 1998 23:06:49 -0500 From: HIPCHIP@IIIFLOYD.COM (C. Completely forgettable The headliner was Gary Wright, who didn't come on stage until after midnight. Roxy came on about 11:00 PM and played apporximately 90 minutes. The set opened with Sentimental Fool and closed with Do the Strand. Also in the set was Out of the Blue, Chance Meeting, Both Ends Burning, Love is the Drug, The Bogus Man, In Every Dream Home, Editions of You, and If There is Something; which was, by the way, the greatest live song I have ever heard performed. I don't recall the other songs, but I believe Whirlwind and Pyjamarama were in the set. For thoses of you who won't take my word about Roxy opening for Gary Wright, I shall go to the Library tomorrow and get a copy of the Review in the Houston Post by Bob Claypool and if I can find one, a copy of an advertisement for the concert. I'll scan these and include them as an attachment to anyone who wishes to have a copy. Email me: hipchip@iiifloyd.com By the way, I was a senior in high school in 76 and was dating a very tall and beautiful girl from Memorial High School in Houston. She want to see Gary Wright, so I got tickets. We were sitting fourth row, center aisle. I had never heard of or any Roxy Music before this concert. Sitting directly in front of us was a young man dressed in the strangest outfit, a Khaki ROTC looking getup with an armband which said ROXY MUSIC. He had a pencil thin moustache and spoke with a British Accent. Since the concert was so late in starting, we began a conversation. It turned out he was the scion of some titled (or Noble) Brit and was traveling around the country following Roxy Music. At the time, I thought this young man was quite insane, following a band around the country, and an opening act that. Anyway, I became an instant fan during the opening strains of Sentimental Fool. I didn't even stay for Gary Wright, I want to get to Cactus Records before they closed. I didn't make it, but the next day I went and bought every Roxy Music album I could find. Imagine my surprise when I gazed upon the cover of Siren and found the the cover model looked just like the girl I brought to the concert. The Sirens were part of the band during this show. Flash forward to 1987 and 1994. See this fat, dumb and happy (and quite insane) Texan flying around the country to see Bryan Ferry. Did anyone catch the Berkely Show in December 94. I saw four shows on this tour, Ft Worth, Austin, Las Vegas and Berkley. The Berkley show rocked. Robin Trower sat in on The 39 Steps and In Every Dream Home. Unbelievable. >From: C.
