Included with this disc is a booklet on EMI history - and towards the end of the booklet is a mention of the purchase of Virgin by EMI and the artists that they inherited. And there it is in EMI's pamphlet as "Brian Ferry" - what hope do we stand of getting as good a set of releases as Virgin Japan manage in the UK if the UK EMI can't even spell his name right - DOH Andy BTW has anyone else heard Bryan's track on the Noel Coward compilation - it's very Ferry and it is still growing on me slowly. Bryan if you are listening - hurry up with the new album. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1998 18:18:16 -0500 From: "Mr. Pleasant" Subject: Re: [AVALON] New Clown? Or Town? As far as I'm concerned, now that the Bee Gees are in, everybody else that gets in after should consider it an insult (it's like saying that you're not as good a band as the Bee Gees). What I meant by the question was that even from people I respect, I have never even see a mention of any Roxy albums while everybody salivates over old David Bowie and the like. Since I've started listening to them (by pure chance) I've been amazed at the general quality of the early albums and so I was just curious as to who's wife Brian Ferry had slept with to get such a cold shoulder. I have no intention of reopening a stale argument. > > We have high hopes for you, Joey. Please don't disappoint us. And I to you all. Remember, you folks are the first Roxy Music fans that I've ever met (however informally it may be) so I hope that I don't unsubscribe from this group in two weeks in frustrated anger over the fact that all Roxy fans are pretentious weirdos sitting behind their computers dressed like Jane Mansfield. But if that's your thing, then that's cool. Joey Trum. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Apr 1998 11:56:05 +1200 (NZST) From: David Fairley Subject: Re: [AVALON] New Clown? Or Town? The fact that RM have not been inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame may simply be because they have only just become eligible for consideration, as somebody commented earlier...doesn't a band become eligible for induction 25 years after forming? RM would therefore only have become eligible in 1997. The fact that the Bee Gees got there first may simply reflect the fact they've been around longer. Who votes for inductees into the Hall of Fame anyway? and is there more than one Hall of Fame? dave. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1998 19:43:47 -0500 (CDT) From: Heather Marie Propes Subject: Re: [AVALON] New Clown? Or Town? Hi Joey, Welcome to the group! Sorry I didn't welcome you earlier, but I've been busy over at the Pulp list (a lot of people are calling Pulp the new Roxy Music. You should check them out!). > JVapor7 wrote: > > > > > > 3) Critics are somewhere below lepers and disc jockeys in the food chain. > > Please refrain from mentioning them or the tired Why-Aren't-Roxy-In-The-Roque- > > And-Rolle-Hall-Of-Fame non-discussion or else you will get a very long visit You can just ignore Jimmy. He's kind of an anomalous Roxy Music fan. For one thing, he doesn't like Europe. Sometimes he comes up with some funny contests and then everyone comes out from the shadows. It has been pretty quiet around here lately. And in my opinon, you are absolutely right, Roxy Music's recognition has been sorely lacking from the media. But most decent artists don't get much media attention, do they? It is my opinion that Roxy Music are just considered too "far out" for most people. They would rather listen to Oasis and remember the Beatles. I'm a recent convert to Roxy's early material too. My first exposure to them was back in the 80's with Avalon. I loved the album, but found the early stuff too...dorky? I don't know. It was too inacessible for me back then. Then long about '93 I heard "If There is Something" on their first album (still my favorite) and fell in love with the band as much as I was in love with the (now ex) boyfriend who had introduced me to them. Well, I've got to run. My fiance needs to use the phone. I'll finish the story later. But welcome! You've got good taste! As far as I'm concerned, now that the Bee Gees are in, >everybody else that gets in after should consider it an insult (it's >like saying that you're not as good a band as the Bee Gees). anecdote time.... about fifteen years ago, while i was still in college, i was hanging around my fraternity house during a party when "born to run" blasted over the sound system. everybody in the room (except me and the friend i was talking to) stopped what they were doing and began singing along loudly at the top of their lungs. my friend stopped for a second and said, "I dunno .... anything _THAT_ many people get into, there's gotta be something wrong with it." and that sums up how i feel about roxy/ferry. their music is challenging, unconventional and sometimes damn near inaccessible. and i like that. who wants to have everybody else's taste? >What I >meant by the question was that even from people I respect, I have >never even see a mention of any Roxy albums while everybody >salivates over old David Bowie and the like. Yesyesyesyesyesyesyes. But does anyone actually KNOW anything about the album? I remember reading about three years ago that just as soon as Bryan came off his world tour, he had his next two albums planned out. The first was to be a collection of 30s, 40s and 50s cover versions, and the next was to be an acoustic album - "Just me and the piano". Er. Take care, Mark "Running around with a man on your back like a train in the night - yeah, like a train in the night." ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V3 #102 **************************** ======================================================================== Please send any questions or comments about the list to avalon-digest-owner@smoe.org
