If you (or anyone) did, I don't think I'd be the only one who'd be interested . . . I suppose the first step would be to try and get together a comprehensive-ish list of Roxy/Ferry film and video that exists and is in general circulation. Does something like this already exist somewhere? I mean the guy is as sharp as they come. Ferry is usually bathed in sweat sans jacket and perhaps even tie by the encore. Palmer, on the other hand, looks like you could slice cheese on the creases - a real sharpie. Palmer has many of the same influences as Ferry and there's a definite kinship to his music. Since vocally he's nothing like Ferry [unlike scads of others who shall go nameless] I would stop short of saying that he's influenced by Ferry. One big difference with Palmer is that he's also widely influenced by ethnic music. Definitely a cool guy in his own right. Too bad about those videos. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 09:26:09 -0400 From: JIM DONATO Subject: [AVALON] Video Comp The proposal that we compile Ferry/Roxy television appearances is a good one. On the Blue Nile mailing list I've been attempting to do this for months to little avail. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be anyone with much to offer in NTSC. I can deal with the standards conversion but that takes the footage down 2 generations. I do have keeno prosumer quality equipment [AV computer, S-VHS, Hi-Band Beta] so maybe I should offer to compile for this list too. I have some good stuff but if North American readers of this list would send me a listing of: 1. What Ferry/Roxy TV footage they have [songs performed/interviews/ which TV show] 2. The video format they have it in [VHS/Beta] 3. The quality of the footage [Tape Speed: SLP/EP/SP for VHS, Beta II/III for Beta] 4. And whether it is in stereo or mono... I would be in a position to request the appropriate footage offered. Music videos are not needed. The commercial compilation that came out 2 years ago takes care of that. I have nice versions of "Avalon" and "More Than This" [missing from the Best Of] which I would include in this tape. People would then send me their original tape[s] which I would dub to the distribution master and send back. After 2 hours of footage was reached I would then post the contents to this list and anyone in North America who wanted a copy would then send me a blank tape and s.a.s.e. Does that sound like a good idea? I ask that no European readers offer footage since I would rather not deal with standards conversion issues [PAL to NTSC]. This NTSC tape alone will complexify my life ehough! - - Jim D. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 14:59:15 -0700 From: thesonics Subject: [AVALON] BEST OFFER APPLIES! hi Jay here: I have 2 record shows this weekend in So. If you've retired how about an announcement to that effect? We can then become a nostalgia list and endlessly rehash all your catalog (which we seem to do anyway) instead of holding out hope that you'll deliver something new for our pleasure Yes a part of King Crimson is touring. Fripp, Adrian Belew, and Trey Gunn will hit Chicago in late May. I will try to be at that one. Oh, speaking of concerts/reunions, the Pretenders and the B-52's are touring together this summer. Cindy Wilson, who left the band, and had a baby, has returned. If anyone gets a chance they should check this one out too. I have been fans of both bands since they first arrived. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 23:16:41 -0500 From: jas2347@xsite.net Subject: [AVALON] Hendrix/Family/Roxy This is entirely subjective. I saw Jimi Hendrix four times, and I also saw many times the most exciting stage group of them all - FAMILY. Ive seen RM once and BF twice and in all three, especially the BF concert in Sydney in 95, there were moments of exctement that rivalled either Hendrix or Family. Graham. > I truely envy you Graham. You saw Hendrix when he was alive! I would have given anything to have even witnessed him once. The last time he came to Chicago was in January 1968. I was 13 at the time and was months away from "discovering" him so I did not go to the concert. I was also taking exams to get into High School at that time. If only I'd been "experinced".... I have heard of the Family (was this the band that had the bass player form Blind Faith?). Of course I've seen Roxy live (twice) and Bryan live (3 times)so I can attest to those shows. Whether they were comprable to a Hendrix show, hmmmm..... But hey, YOU were there- I'm still jealous ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 22:57:00 -0500 From: jas2347@xsite.net Subject: [AVALON] the Cure does Roxy From: David Nickel To: avalon@smoe.org Date: Thursday, April 23, 1998 7:25 PM Subject: [AVALON] X-Files soundtrack ready to go - Including Roxy cover >Hi all...how do you think this will turn out? > >(cut and pasted from somewhere (can't remember where) on the net) >... The Cure "More Than This" (Roxy Music cover) odd choice considering the merchantless maniacs covered the same song last year. why not use the original? the cure is IMHO a boring mope rock band that is not nearly as deserving of the pub as RM. - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 02:03:52 -0400 (EDT) From: shin Subject: Re: [AVALON] X-Files soundtrack ready to go - Including Roxy cover Cure doing More Than This will be interesting. I didn't really like the Maniacs cover. It was little to up beat for me. Maybe RM/BM will finally get some recognition in this country. Having 2 different artist cover your song w/in a year will prompt people to go out and pick up Avalon at least. Being a BIG Cure Fan and of course a Roxy/Bryan fan, I beg to differ. I am truely astonshied that they were asked to do a cover of a Roxy song. IMHO it will help class up the soundtrack. In case anyone questions the Cure's abilities, they have done some covers in the recent past that have totally redefined the originals they were covering. In particular they did a cover of Hello I Love You by the Doors that made that nugget sound very fresh. They also did a cover of Purple Haze on the Hendrix Tribute CD that was way better than everything else on that complilations INCLUDING Eric Clapton's and Buddy Guy's contributions ( and they actually KNEW Hendrix when he was alive!!). I have a lot of FAITH that the Cure will do another bang up job on the Roxy cover. Robert Smith has good instincts and is a Roxy Fan as well. Yes it is a shame that the original will not be included, but at least Roxy will be acknowledged. I'm sure Bryan has given his blessing to all of this. Of course if the soundtrack, and of course the movie is successful, Bryan will reap the rewards. ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V3 #97 *************************** ======================================================================== Please send any questions or comments about the list to avalon-digest-owner@smoe.org
