The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame is a farce. It's basically a mouthpiece for the self-congratulatory Jann Wenner Perrier and Coke crowd that wouldn't know real Rock & Roll if it bit them in the ass. They're too busy grooming their stock portfolios to worry whether Link Wray (who - did he ever play with Clapton?) gets inducted before he's dead or not. While Bryan Ferry has my highest esteem I wouldn't stay awake nights worrying whether Roxy Music's inducted or not. As much as I hate to admit it, the few times I have felt the REAL POWER of R & R the experience had nothing to do with Ferry and 7 session musicians sweating elegantly on a 100 foot stage. I waited 20 years to finally see Ferry in 1994 and I even managed to meet the man. It was neat but it had didley squat to do with Rock & Roll. In contrast, I will never forget the first time I saw Dick Dale 18 months earlier! It was like a religious epiphany! The music was as powerful as a fistful of dynamite. Waves of incredibly powerful energy were emanating from that Fender amp. My perceptions of life changed as sure as if I'd taken a hit of acid. THAT was R & R! Link Wray? The man IS Rock & Roll - period! I saw him in a bar in Atlanta last November and he had more in common with a 20 year old than a 68 year old. Hell, most 20 year olds are pathetic next to the guy. Like Dick Dale, it was being in the presence of a force of nature. Meanwhile, do you know what band gets the most write-in votes in the annual Goldmine reader's poll for the R&R HOF? Every year they've conducted it it's been the freaking Moody Blues by a w i d e margin! Here's a band whose lasting contribution to Rock & Roll was its monumental attempt to bury it via the horror of unintentional kitsch and staggering pretension! I would be highly chagrined to have Roxy rubbing shoulders with most of the contents of the HOF! We should worry about bigger things - like when/if Ferry manages to make another album. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Apr 1998 10:23:46 +0500 From: "Graham Howard" Subject: [AVALON] Is there an objective criteria? > Date: Wed, 22 Apr 1998 08:59:32 -0400 > From: JIM DONATO > To: avalon@smoe.org > Subject: [AVALON] Hall Of Fame Sham > Reply-to: avalon@smoe.org > I agree with David Bowie. This raises the interesting question of what constitutes rock n roll. I have never liked the term, as it seems too narrow. What is rock n roll? Definately Elvis and Bill Haley and the Rolling Stones, but Pink Floyd? I wouldnt call RM/BF rock n roll in the narrow sense of the term; they are too sophisticated and creative! I would call them a rock group, but not rock n roll. > As much as I hate to admit it, the few times I have felt the REAL > POWER of R & R the experience had nothing to do with Ferry and 7 > session musicians sweating elegantly on a 100 foot stage. I saw Jimi Hendrix four times, and I also saw many times the most exciting stage group of them all - FAMILY. Ive seen RM once and BF twice and in all three, especially the BF concert in Sydney in 95, there were moments of exctement that rivalled either Hendrix or Family. I think there is very little likelihood of the contribution of Roxy Music being recognized and enshrined in the HOF. Most likely, when Bowie is inducted Roxy will mistakenly be cited as bands influenced by the Thin White Duke/Aladinn Sane, etc. In the meantime, Bryan, some of us have been sitting here patiently waiting for the next album. Even the glacial King Crimson has energized itself by splitting into experimental sub-units and (gasp!!!) touring before recording. If you've retired how about an announcement to that effect? We can then become a nostalgia list and endlessly rehash all your catalog (which we seem to do anyway) instead of holding out hope that you'll deliver something new for our pleasure.
