The result is two visually stunning new commercials ... based around the theme that Britain isn't what it used to be - and neither, by implication, is Rover. ... Now (Rover) wants to portray itself as young urban and hip without losing the British feel: no longer the cars for the John Majors of this world but one for New Labour. Thus the ad for the Rover 200 shows a trendy girl driving her car through a carnival. She is wearing arresting red, white and blue contact lenses. The voice over talks about the cliches of dull, boring Britain and refers to the pearly queens. The final shot shows two girls parking their Rover to go clubbing, each with a pearl in their navel. The second ad, for the Rover 400, takes us on a tour of Britain. Again the voiceover talks of guide-book Britain - from Lancashire hot pots to the Edinburgh tattoo. Again the film contrasts vividly with the voiceover by showing modern-day Lancashire and a tattooed girl dancing in the streets at the Edinburgh Festival. Both films have been heavily doctored to give them a speeded-up look and heighten the colour. The soundtracks are also instructive. Old Rover adds used Handel's Largo to give a relaxed and unfussy feel to the car. The new ads use two 70s hits, This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us by Sparks and VIRGINIA PLAIN by ROXY MUSIC. the music picks up on the fact that the 70s are cool again, while also appealing to thirtysomethings who associate the music with their youth. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Apr 1998 21:40:45 +0200 From: Bahi Para Subject: Re: [AVALON] Roxy are "Cool" ... official Chris Garrett, everyone's favourite librarian, quoted: >The new [Rover] ads use >two 70s hits, This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us by Sparks >and VIRGINIA PLAIN by ROXY MUSIC. the music picks up on the fact that >the 70s are cool again, while also appealing to thirtysomethings who >associate the music with their youth. Two excellent songs but we never thought he'd be [selling] a Rover. What a bitter end... Something to cheer us up: there's a critical but revealing on-line interview with Ferry carried out at the time of the last Roxy box set ("The Thrill of it All") and the Roxy/Ferry Greatest Hits collection. Don't trust the accuracy of Clara's transcription or rely on her memory, even though she implies that the interview was taped. Apart from careless references to "Brian Ferry" and a "Mammounia" album, she quotes Ferry talking about Amanda Lear appearing on the *third* Roxy album cover and referring to his friend and mentor Richard Hamilton as David. No way. But the carelessness doesn't detract from an essential read.
