What's this about a concert in NYC- WHERE? WHEN? TELL US!! Don Heatley - -- "I am for the life around the corner that takes you by surprise" - Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music, Manifesto ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Mar 1998 09:52:56 -0500 From: JIM DONATO Subject: [AVALON] avalon-digest V3 #52 -Reply Seekers of the BF/RM video collection can get the godlike Japanese laserdisc of it for only $62 from Laser Exchange [www.laserexchange.com]. Discs like this are reason enough to buy a laserdisc player! Gems like this will take years [if ever] to make it to DVD so why wait? It contains over 90 minutes of mind boggling videos from Roxy and Ferry solo. The only notable omissions are "More Than This" and "Avalon," amazingly enough. The only reason for their absence I can think of is that the label has lost the video masters for these clips. Unfortunately, this is known to happen. But what it does have more than makes up! Laser Exchange also has "Total Recall" on Japanese laserdisc, which as some may know, is a whole different kettle of fish. That program is a historic overview of the band where only song excerpts are shown. Laser Exchange are good people whom I've dealt with for years and can vouch for. Better yet, these discs are in stock and will not require a special order [and subsequent waiting period]. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Mar 1998 10:14:34 -0500 From: JIM DONATO Subject: [AVALON] avalon-digest V3 #53 -Reply The '79 Manifesto-era Japanese Laserdisc is also another Japanese laserdisc bounty. Known as "On The Road," it is basically a BBC TV concert that was broadcast in England at the time and as such, sports a mono soundtrack. But the laserdisc looks and sounds great and where else can you get such quality video of BF as a red leather Vulcan? While we're on the subject, here's a listing of each RM/BF optical format video that I know about. 1. "The High Road" - U.S. laserdisc of "Avalon" tour. Domestic tape available. 2. "On The Road" - Japanese laserdisc of "Manifesto" tour. Tape unknown. 3. "Virginia Plain" - Japanese "Beat Club" 5" CDV featuring live performance of this song from German TV ["Musikladen" - different from the version shown on "Total Recall"]. No tape. 4. "New Town" - Japanese laserdisc of "Bete Noir" tour. Domestic tape available. 5. "Total Recall" - Japanese laserdisc of RM documentary. Domestic tape available. 6. "Bryan Ferry + Roxy Music Video Collection" - Japanese laserdisc of RM/BF music videos from 72-94. No domestic tape. Can anyone add to this list? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Mar 1998 10:57:23 +0500 From: "Graham Howard" Subject: [AVALON] Re: Manifesto lyrics > Date: Tue, 03 Mar 1998 07:42:56 -0500 > From: Don Heatley > To: avalon@smoe.org > Subject: [AVALON] WHAT NYC CONCERT???? > Reply-to: avalon@smoe.org > What's this about a concert in NYC- WHERE? Yes, he does say something about "Brute force" towards the end. Manifesto is my all time fav Roxy track. I never get tired of listening to it. Yes, Actually, I hear "Brute strain" -- and pretty clearly enunciated at that. Of course, now and then I've suffered imperfection (and my attempts at deciphering RM lyrics are no exception). :-) -wfs ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Mar 1998 16:01:03 +0500 From: "Graham Howard" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: Manifesto lyrics > Date: Tue, 03 Mar 1998 12:25:39 -0800 > To: avalon@smoe.org > From: William Sommers > Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: Manifesto lyrics > Reply-to: avalon@smoe.org > At 14:19 3/3/98 +0500, Graham Howard wrote: > > >> > > I am for a life and time by numbers, blast n fast in low. > > Well, while we're picking it apart, it's "blast in fast and low"... > > >> Me thinks the man is singin', "Brute strength, against the grain...", > >> because he also later yodels something about "brute force". > > > I'll listen to it again but I still think it's "Root strain". I've heard that Bryan Ferry is going to shot the new video clip in St=Petersburg, Russia. Not sure whether he's still there, but he used to sing (not literally) the praises of life in St Petersburg, and wrote about it for The Observer in the UK. Whenever I get a chance to read UK magazines and papers, I notice that St Petersburg's portrayed in a very flattering light... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Mar 1998 22:03:43 EST From: JSMITH900 Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: Manifesto lyrics Graham, In a message dated 98-03-03 14:32:44 EST, you write: << Manifesto is my all time fav Roxy track.
