It's a really good recording and performance-wise is very well done also. My enjoyment is somewhat tempered by my lukewarm feelings regarding James Wraith. He is technically a fine singer, but I can't help but feel that Phil and Andy would have been better served by finding a singer that owed a little less to Bryan, thus removing some of the temptation to compare what they were doing to their previous outfit. The playing is topnotch, but some of JW's vocal mannerisms were too Ferry-esque for me to not compare JW unfavorably. I sometimes found myself waiting for the vocal parts to get over so I could hear Phil and/or Andy work their magic, which probably isn't a good sign. I also thought their compositions were a bit spotty. Some of their tunes are great and some I find kind of mediocre. Unfortunately, some of their less exciting tunes are featured here. So not exactly a glowing 100% recommendation, but still well worth seeking out for fans of Manzanera or Mackay, and no doubt James Wraith has his supporters as well. On a related note has anyone ever found a copy of the Manzanera/801 Live at Manchester CD? It has proven to be exceptionally elusive to the point where I was starting to think that it was one of those releases that sometimes show up on some companies schedule of forthcoming releases but never seem to actually materialize. Then this showed up on the Eno list about a week ago. So apparently it does actually exist, at least in some part of the world (the gentleman who passed along this info was from Germany). I do a lot of CD shopping online, and have several different sites that I check on a semi-regular basis for hard to find items. The only place that ever had it listed (Artist Shop), now doesn't. Following is the basic track/lineup info of the disc >The line-up is as follows: > >Simon Ainley: lead vocals, guitar >Bill Maccormick: bass >Phil Manzanera: guess what >Dave Skinner: keyboards >Paul Thompson: drums > >guesting: > >Lol Creme: background vocals (?) >Kevin Godley: background vocals (?) >Andy Mackay: sax > >Tracks are: > >01. If there is anybody else having difficulty finding this in th U.K. send a cheque for stlg7.99 to: Espirit mail order, Espirit house, Railway Sidings, Meopham, Kent, DA13 OYS, England. O.K. you could always have got it on the phenomenon soundtrack but it's worth buying the single for varios reasons: it has a nice picture of Bryan on the cover, it is a picture disc, and it has extra tracks "Help me" and the extended version of "I.Y.L.S.E." which are both excellent. The catalogue has a number of rarities, the dearest of which is a number of remixes of "the 39 Steps" by Eno which were never released. These are priced at stlg50. I presume this "B.f.: the Greatest" is the same one as "Will you still love me tomorrow" released in Japan a few years ago? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Feb 1998 15:55:45 -0600 From: angela Subject: Re: [AVALON] Exploreres live Victor Hastings wrote: > crazy about manzanera and mackay (but there are probably not too many of > those on this list!). > Au contraire mon frere/soure(sorry for poor french, la bete americain). Andy Mackay was the first member of Roxy Music that I went crazy about with Eno and BF in a close second. I have recently come to regard all the members of RM(except the bassists, since they are too many for me to regard individually) with equal appreciation. I have had the chance to read a book Andy Mackay wrote about electronic music, a few years ago. Anyways, just thought I would speak out. Anywayz, just thought I would tell. regards, Frank ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V3 #51 *************************** ======================================================================== Please send any questions or comments about the list to avalon-digest-owner@smoe.org
