Sir Elton John joined Sting and Suede at the concert, which coincided with a new album recorded to commemorate the centenary of the songwriter and playwright, which is in two years' time. The concert was organised by Neil Tennant, one half of the Pet Shop Boys, and also featured Robbie Williams and Marianne Faithfull. The record, Twentieth Century Blues, will be released in April, when the concert will also be broadcast. - -=Charity fundraiser=- Actors Ned Sherrin, Nigel Hawthorne and Imogen Stubbs also made guest appearances. Money raised will go to the Red Hot Aids Charitable Trust, set up in 1992 to channel funds to HIV/Aids prevention projects in this country and abroad. - -=Generations influenced=- Neil Tennant said Noel Coward had influenced generations of British musicians, from the Beatles to Britpop. "The Beatles, when they started, were in the showbusiness tradition, because Britain did not have rock and roll. John Lennon used to go to parties at Alma Cogan's flat and chatted to Noel Coward. "Bryan Ferry virtually modelled his image on Noel Coward." He said it had been important to give the songs a contemporary feel without losing Coward's spirit. "Some tribute albums have done things like rap versions that bear no resemblance to the original. Twentieth Century Blues is quite a convincing jazz song, and his ballads are very beautiful without being slushy." - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ •"Work is more fun than fun." •When Churchill said he did not see whyEdward VIII should not marry his "little cutie" during the Abdicationcrisis of 1937, Coward responded: "Because England does not want a Queen Cutie!" •Of Churchill himself, he wrote that he was "a great man withmore Achilles heels than are usual in a bi-ped, one of which is a remarkable capacity for self-deception and another a strong vein for cheapness." •Of the death of Lord Beaverbrook, Coward said: "This long -too long - delayed occurrence requires no comment. God is still presumably in his heaven unless he had been forced to move over." •Of Jamaica he wrote: "The reefs are enchanting; the water is clear, Thecolouring couldn't be dreamier But one coral scratch and you may spend ayear In bed with acute septicemia" •Of God he said: "We've never been intimate, but maybe we have a few things in common." You are in a private jet, on your way to promote 'Let's Stick Together,' a surprise hit in Zambia. Sitting next to you in the plane are Mr. Bryan Ferry and Ms. Jerry Hall. As this is your first trip as Mr. Ferry's personal assistant, and because you admire him so very much for the very extraordinary artiste he is, you are deathly nervous. Suddenly there is bad turbulence, and the plane plunges into a nose dive. Mr. Ferry and Ms. Hall are visibly upset, although you don't act on the impulse to hold his hand. The plane crashes, catapulting its inhabitants into a lush tropical jungle setting. Smoke and the smell of death fills your nostils. The captain--who, it will later be revealed via an autopsy, was in the process of doing bumps of cocaine off the stewardess's derierre--is dead (as is the aformentioned stewardess). You find yourself caught in a tree, nose-to-nose with Ms. Hall, and for the first time you are cognizant of the fact she is not wearing any panties under the faux tigerskin skirt. As you have been smitten with Ms. Hall since first gazing upon the infamous 'cowboy-hat, smile and no bra' picture on page 158 of 'Tall Tales,'* you take action, and while groggy and a bit bloody, she responds in an affirmative manner (you may be male or female, of course). After vividly consumating your union, you both look down to ground below, where a dazed but alive Bryan Ferry stands staring up at the two of you in the tree. In spite of his condition, he seems rather pensive, as if there is something very much on his mind. You look at Ms. Hall. Ms. Hall looks at Mr. Ferry. And Mr. Ferry looks at you. Will you continue the affair with Ms. Hall? And most importantly...what do you tell Bryan? * I am fully aware that 'Tall Tales' came out in 1985, long after the Ferry-Hall split, but it's my contest, so all you anal-retentive chronology types please return to alphabetizing your King Crimson albums. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Feb 1998 17:26:55 -0600 From: Will Subject: Re: [AVALON] Contest #72--A Moral Dilemma JVapor7@aol.com wrote: > Will you continue the affair with Ms. Hall? > And most importantly...what do you tell Bryan? > > * I am fully aware that 'Tall Tales' came out in 1985, long after the > Ferry-Hall split, but it's my contest, so all you anal-retentive chronology > types please return to alphabetizing your King Crimson albums.
