I actually felt guilty about my last post since I forgot to mention that Roxy were to appear on the best of the Old Grey Whistle Test on Saturday on B.B.C.2. To my disappointment though to your relief, I imagine, most of you will have seen it before. It was not in fact Roxys first TV performance but instead that performance of Do the Strand that appears on Total Recall. The only extra bit was where the introducer (forget his name) said "Well you all know my feelings on Roxy Music by now so I'll say no more except to say that nothing they've done since first appearing on this show has made me change my opinions". The modern day introducer said that Roxy was one of the very few bands this man disliked as he regarded them as comedians. Any more info on this introducer? What did he think of later Roxy? Also can anybody give me details about Ferrys performance on Jools Holland a few years ago and also details about a programme concerning Taxi which appeared on I.T.V. I think it was part of a series called "The Beat". - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Feb 1998 10:06:04 +0500 From: "Graham Howard" Subject: RE: [AVALON] photos > From: "MCGINLEY GA" > Organization: University of Ulster > To: avalon@smoe.org > Date: Mon, 9 Feb 1998 12:32:03 GMT > Subject: RE: [AVALON] photos > Reply-to: avalon@smoe.org > The photos of the 95 tour are size 6" by 4". I think the story is that he objected to RM being a "manufactured" band because of their "overnight success" (or more likely he just didn't "get it"!) and in his introduction to their first appearance on OGWT attempted to disassociate himself from them even being allowed into building. His comment on their second appearance is interesting ... he obviously hadn't bothered to listen to FYP. Anyway, Harris now works for BBC Radio 2 ... says it all really! I saw one of the OGWT re-runs the other week and it was introduced by Paul Morley ... he used to write for the NME in the early eighties ... a bit of a tosser but I think he's got a soft spot for RM. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Feb 1998 13:21:14 -0600 From: "Victor Hastings" Subject: [AVALON] Girl of my Best Briend The CDNow discography includes a Ferry import (presumably British) called "Girl of my Best Friend" and describes it as containing "rare and unreleased" material. If they're referring to the 3rd single from Taxi, it might come with with a few live "New Town" tour tracks that are otherwise unavailable on CD. Like the other two singles from Taxi, there were two versions issued, one forming part of a Live and Archive box set, the other containing rare(ish) studio material. I think "...Best Friend" came with Ferry's excellent recording of "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" but I could be wrong - my copies aren't to hand. That track is also available on a Japanese pressing of Taxi and on the soundtrack of that film with a truckload of fake Elvises in it, whatever it was called. I think in this case, both versions came with the album mix of "...Best Friend". The marketing men made sure that all 6 versions of the Taxi singles contained something of interest, either a CD issue of a slightly obscure track like Nocturne, some New Town performances, or sharper remixes of Taxi songs. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Feb 1998 22:23:02 +0100 From: Bahi Para Subject: RE: [AVALON] photos >That would be "whispering" Bob Harris ... During his last days at Radio 1, WBH - a middle-of-the-road imbecile - played a Roxy track from (of course) "Flesh and Blood". Knowing his opinion of early Roxy, I waited with baited breath for even the smallest suggestion of a change of mind, but none was forthcoming. It was a great day for Radio One when it parted company with the old fool. >Also can anybody give me details about Ferrys performance on Jools >Holland a few years ago Bryan played "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" accompanied only by Jools on piano and Neil Hubbard in stripped-down, Zamba-esque mode on guitar. It was a heartfelt performance, albeit with an alarming amount of facial tremor from the man in the K-Mart clobber. He miraculously managed to loose the shakes before the Mamouna tour. Jools mentioned at the beginning of the program that Ferry was absent for the usual opening jam but was at that moment in a taxi on the way to the studio, the significance of which comment was lost on me at the time. >also details about a programme concerning Taxi which appeared on I.T.V. I missed that one. There was something similar on Mamouna, featuring David Williams' amusing tale of the time he first played on a Bete Noire session, asking a slightly puzzled Bryan Ferry whether he had a recording deal, to the horror of Pat Leonard, frantically maving his hand across his throat and trying to signal "Cut!" but to no avail... - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Feb 1998 16:38:20 -0600 From: "Victor Hastings" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Girl of my Best Briend - -----Original Message----- From: Bahi Para To: avalon@smoe.org Date: Monday, February 09, 1998 3:44 PM Subject: Re: [AVALON] Girl of my Best Briend >>The CDNow discography includes a Ferry import (presumably British) called >>"Girl of my Best Friend" and describes it as containing "rare and >>unreleased" material. Bahi, Thanks for the info. The CDNow web site lists "Girl of my Best Friend" at a hefty $32.99 US, which would be far too expensive for a single but could be a collection of singles perhaps. Pasi's web site refers to a series of Taxi-era singles backed with some live & archive material so perhaps "Girl of my Best Friend" is the name under which the CD singles were compiled and sold. I may just have to order the thing out of curiosity! Sorry for breaking "list ettiquette" but..I have often wondered if any list members are fans of the band Talk Talk and/or the lead vocalist, Mark Hollis? I just picked up the import of Hollis's brand new release,(Self titled) and it is brilliant! Somewhat reminiscent of Talk Talk's last two releases "Spirit of Eden" and "Laughingstock" but more accoustical. Mark Hollis is A beautifull record which features woodwind intruments, a piano, and no electric guitars! Do not think MTV un-plugged-it is way, way,way more sophisticated and subtle for that kind of stereotype. I would not exctly draw too much of a comparison between Talk Talk and BF/RM but Since most of the list loves BF/RM as much as I do, (We probably have some similarities in our music tastes) might I suggest members check out "Natural History-the best of Talk Talk" This would be a nice introduction to one of the most under-rated bands of the 80's and early 90's. Similiar to BF/RM- it is almost impossible to find any Talk Talk fans in the United States! Please post either to the list or me personally if you are into Talk Talk/Mark Hollis Thanx, Steve > > - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Feb 1998 00:03:33 -0800 From: erik simpson Subject: Re: [AVALON] Talk Talk/Mark Hollis At 09:37 PM 2/9/98 -0500, you wrote: >Similiar to BF/RM- it is almost impossible to find any Talk Talk fans in the >United States! I also have the remix cd "History Revisited", which is fun at times, if not exactly of the same caliber as the later recordings. I have been hearing excellent things about the new solo cd and you seem to be in agreement. Any word on a stateside release? Or is it going to stay a pricey, import only item?
