What follows is a reminiscence from my youth, my friends groan when I tell the story so feel free to delete now. I have always been a Roxy fan, I am from Birmingham (the one in the middle of England). In 1979, when I was 19, I skived a day off work and queued with around 40 other people from 7.30am outside the Odeon = Theatre in New Street, Birmingham. By 11am when the box office opened there = were about 300 people queuing. They were all my age and extremely trendy (as I was then). I managed to get 4 tickets for each of the 2 nights (Thu and Fri, I think). The first night arrived, it was the MANIFESTO tour. I parked my car in = a secret place I knew, not far from the theatre and met my friends. We were all FABULOUS!! As we walked down New St. we actually blended in with the crowd for once. Loads of guys were dressed like me, white Tux, dyed black hair - so COOL !! The girls all looked amazing, tight dresses, or RAF uniforms, skin tight split skirts, very high stilettos, too much make up (especially my friend Joanne!). The theatre was a proper old picture house, gold balustrades, huge chandeliers, it was so exciting, an EVENT, not just a concert. It started, Bryan had a red leather suit on (I bought one 2 weeks later in London for =A3700, a FORTUNE then!) and his hair was VERY black and = he was wearing loads of make up. It was brilliant, we were all standing up and in the aisles the entire time, we were three rows from the front. When the concert finished everybody piled outside and at the side Entrance were two brand new Jaguars (Series III, which had been out about a week, I had not seen one before). While everyone crowded round the cars by the stage door I ran and got = my car and we sat in it outside the theatre. There was a huge commotion = and a rush of people and Security guards as the band got in the Jags. As they drove off two girls lay in front of the cars and had to be = removed! We followed the cars and they went to the Albany Hotel, about half a mile round the corner. So, the next night we repeated the whole event (it was even better), except we left immediately after the last song and drove to the Albany, walked in as casually as we could and ordered loads of drinks in the hotel Balcony Cocktail Bar. We knew they would not throw you out of a hotel at closing time (10H30) if you had a drink on the go. It was obvious quite a few other fans were there and at 10H50 some mean security men said 'if you lot are waiting for the band you can forget it, they have gone to a club, so sod off!'. My friend Joanne had made friends by now (typical) with a businessman who was a hotel resident. = He kindly told the guards that we were with him and they left us alone. About 11H00 there was a terrible commotion and screaming outside the hotel and as we peered over the balcony loads of security men helped = the Band out of the cars, past the fans who had followed and into the hotel and then they locked the doors behind them. Bryan was wearing a full length black fur coat and looked harassed. He was first and the guards put him in the ground floor lift, alone.=20 I ran to the lifts on the first floor, where we were and pressed the button and held it.................the lift stopped and standing right in front of me, 2 feet away, was Bryan. I said 'hi' and completely FROZE, I have never been so scared, my hero, face to face !!!. He = smiled and pressed his lift button, the doors started to close but I had my finger on the call button so the opened again, this happened perhaps five times (I'm embarrassed NOW). Suddenly I was dragged to the ground by two guards who flung me out the hotel doors. I sat on the pavement, dazed..................... Meanwhile, Joanne had run to the second floor, pressed the button and got in the lift, just her and Bryan !!! ................. She is very attractive and lives near me in London now. She swears this was ALL that happened: She said hello and told him she loved the concert, he thanked her and asked her were she was from. The lift arrived at the penthouse (of course!) and she got out with him. He showed Joanne round the suite and told her that the guards came to = check the room and she really should leave before they threw her out. He was polite and thanked her for coming. She offered a pen but had no paper (the programmes were in the car), for an autograph. He signed her arm and put her in the lift. Eventually she came and found me on the pavement. She showed me her = arm, I was so jealous. I still have the photograph of her arm that I took. = It wore off in about a week, she never washed it!! Subsequently, being fashion victims, we became New Romantics (a bit = sad, I know) and frequented a Birmingham night club called the Rum Runner. = It was the place to go and we (Joanne, of course) became friendly with a guy called Simon Le Bon and his friend John Taylor. The owners of the club (two brothers, whose names I forget) wanted to manage a trendy = band and created and backed and managed Duran Duran. We saw them do their first ever live gig at the club (it was hopeless) and all us trendsetters laughed at them and they were embarrassed. Well I reckon they had the last laugh, they were soon off touring the world!! So that is it. I have been to EVERY Roxy/Bran tour. The best since then was the 'try out' at the London Palladium (a tiny, old theatre, that recalled the Odeon memories) before he did the NEC (New Town/Mamouna), that was brilliant, huge pots of incense burning on the stage and the best rendition of Avalon I ever heard and In every Dream Home a Heartache to the synthesizer backing tape. The audience was completely silent for both these, you have probably seen the video. Apologies if you were bored !!!
