First off is the recent stateside release of Robert Wyatt's "Shleep", several months after the civilized world. This album features performances from Brian Eno and (on one song) Phil Manzanera. Perhaps more important than these performances is the fact that this cd exists in this form is because Phil Manzanera donated time in his studio to Wyatt, whose last several albums were quite sparse and stark. As Wyatt (think of "Frontera" off "Diamond Head" if you have no other reference point) is anything BUT a hot commercial property and can't afford a massive studio budget, Manzanera's generosity allowed Wyatt to record without one eye (at least) on the clock, giving us much more detailed work than on any Wyatt recording in many years. At least one Avalonian (Roberto, you still there?) had it on his short list for the best of '97. I'll have to settle for '98. Great work by a great artist. In fairness though, anyone buying it solely for the Manzanera or Eno connection may be disappointed. It is very much Wyatt's album. The second "sighting" is a bit more bizarre. I like to read items in the illustrated narrative medium. You might call them comic books (although much of what I read is more dark and disturbing than funny or "comic"). I have of late been reading a limited (7 issues) series called "Red Rocket 7", a fairly whimsical sci-fi/rock and roll story of a group of alien clones (#1 thru #7), especially #7 whose particular gifts are musical. It's full of voluminous rockandroll/pop culture references, as Red 7 shares many of his best ideas with Elvis (issue 2) the Beatles (#3) and now Bowie (#4). Peripheral to the the Bowie theme are many artists in Bowies "orbit" at the time (Lou Reed, Mott the Hoople, Iggy, T Rex all get a mention). Also included is Roxy. It's only one panel, and it shows Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno drawn in front of the "Country Life" models (an obvious chronological inaccuracy, but hey...) with the caption "Glam/Glitterrock even subdivided into genres of its own-Art Glam for the sophisticates, personified by Roxy Music." When I saw where the story was headed, I wondered if Roxy would get a nod. A nod is all it was, but any recognition is better than none, I guess. (Perhaps more important is the part where it shows how Brian Jones actually drowned during a skirmish with the evil alien "enfinites".) If anyone is interested they are $3.95 from Dark Horse publishing, by Mike Allred, and are oversized, approximately the size of an LP. It is however a fairly safe bet that anyone coming in for the first time on issue #4 will be a bit confused. Recommended only to the obsessive, unless you like this kind of thing, as I do. Certainly a dubious purchase, if made solely for Roxy content. Still it was cool to see them in a "comic book". Time to crawl back under my rock. Am I present, or am I present through the agency of my writing? After all, can you be sure of MY subjectivity Mr. Vapor? Can you be sure the the "YOU'RE" to which you refered above really corresponds to my "I"? That my name is really Heather Propes? That I am really female? Of course not, all you can be sure of are the words which stand in to signify "me." These words are the only things truly "present." But the meaning of these words is extremely unstable, as you have proven by calling attention to the typo in which I inadvertantly made it sound as if I would like you to wash me, rather than my dishes, which was my true meaning and a more appropriate fit within the context of the sentance. Anyway, Mr. Vapor, the point I am trying to make is that you do have the ability to alter my electronic "identity" by quoting me out of context, referring to me with insulting nicknames (as Mr. Folk is wont to do), etc. And similarly, I have the ability to do this to you. But is it really that much of a kick to spend all your time and energy altering an identity that may be fictitious in the first place? Do you also write letters quoting the characters of your favorite books? > > Please note that contestants do not receive bonus points by lengthening their > already windy entries with obscure footnotes. Ladies and Gentleman of Avalonia! We have a winner in Contest #38! In an unexpected upset, Heather Marie Propes has demolished the competition! Of all the twenty-seven entries that have been posted, who among us can deny the surreal tone--the wild misspellings--and most importantly, the all-consuming RAGE TO LIVE of Ms. "Propes'" multi-part contribution? And so, Ms. "Heather Marie Propes"--if you indeed "exist" (gender is unimportant)--and you have what is known in this dimension as an "address"--please contact PAPTI immediately for your prize. You won't be disappointed! First runner-up, of course, is Brian Folks with his terse but heady melange of candy bars, presidential hijinks and bowel movements (Congratulations--and please contact Jas for your Sambo lessons, Brian!). In other news, please note that Colleen Matan was given a special Lifetime Achievement Award for her 37 years of service to PAPTI. The private ceremony was highlighted by Peter 'Dollface' LaRue's touching four-hour speech and puppet show. And to all you other Avalonians who participated, remember-- It's Not Whether You Win Or Lose, It's How You Play The Game! Stand up and take a bow, one and all! And look for Contest #62!
