This is a story and a question for you ! Three months ago by a chance I came across the "Siren" album as the first RM album I have ever heard. This event started something that could be called RM & BF mania - you must know what it means. At present I've got nearly all the RM and BF albums, altough it is not easy to get them in our country. I really enjoy listening to them and you will agree what a miracle it is when you realize my favorite artists are The Clash... And now a question : At the "Taxi" booklet there are some snapshots of BF. One of them is showing him walking up the street, half-hiding his face, with closed eyes. And there is a big number "50" on the house in the opposite side of the street. What the hell does it mean ? We had a lot of discussion at our students dormitory room on this theme while listening to "Stranded" after a bottle of wine. At the end we made a solution that Bryan is simply afraid if his age ! What do you think about it ? I hope I didn't prove I am dick and won't be deleted... Bye ! Well, sort of ... From this month's Q magazine: "ROXY MUSIC Roxy Music Virgin LP CENT 37 7243 8 44855 1972 debut recorded for just =A33000. Reached number 10. Roxy Music's muscular glam pop was like a highly wrought juggernaut. Their classic first outing, re-released here on vinyl with posh sleeve and analogue cutting (whatever that is), shows the homage they paid to the kitsch pop art of Velvet Underground, and the trail they laid for punk stalwarts like The Banshees and Magazine. Tracks such as Re-Make/Re-Model and Ladytron combine Brian Eno's poignant pre-ambient sonic spaces with Bryan Ferry's distinctive, vaudeville rock'n'roll. Though it veers into pastiche (Bitters End) or Rocky Horror prog rock like The Bob (Medley), there are moments of sheer beauty (Sea Breezes) to take your breath away. * * * * [ 4 star - Excellent. Definitely worth investigation] Lucy O'Brien Like this? Try these ... New York Dolls - New York Dolls, Mercury, 1973 Sparks - Kimono My House, Island, 1974 Suede - Suede, Nude, 1993" The link with Suede is interesting ... I haven't heard this album but I thought I could detect some "early Roxy" guitars in Bernard Butler's new single "Stay". Certainly, the pictures in the Taxi booklet are pictures of Newcastle upon Tyne, where BF comes from. Bowie has and remains a very arresting/interesting "performer" even if he is the Man Who Sold The World shares of his songs. His innovative work from the early days is still resonating with a lot of bands-just ask Trent Reznor and (if he were alive) Kurt Corbin. So he goes thru CHANGES, but at least he gives it a good shot. Yea I'm a fan but I am a fan of Roxy too for the same reason. They both came from a time when most of the "popular" music was bland to say the least (especially in America). They added some dare, glare, and glam and everthing that followed it has not been the same. And yes both showed very good taste by having ENO as a part of their efforts. I say Viva Roxy/Bryan and Viva Bowie. Okay let's talk it up...... Anyway he always seems to use some wild looking younger guy in the band. I remember seeing and I can't remember his name but he was very pale, played keyboards and I believe he played with the Psychedelic Furs at one point and may now be a Cure member. I really looked in the R&R Museum and he was nowhere to be found. I was hoping for the red leather outfit at least. He might not have made it that big in the US but everytime he comes to Chicago tickets are snapped up pretty quickly. Making it big in the US isn't exactly a measure of taste anyway. Anyone who thinks Bowie has no talent should listen to Station to Station and even to some his latest work. At the least try to open their minds a little, but I guess in the end everyone's entitled to his own opinion.
