Can't comment on the rest of the cd as I went straight to track 6. I have to say it bought a tear to my eye. Definately a different sound but I like it. It's beatiful, very sad but very fitting. The piano in the backround is splendid and it's nice to hear Ferry again. Old Shakey would have approved. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Dec 1997 23:37:40 +0100 From: Bahi Para Subject: [AVALON] Ferry in Demo Tape Shock I haven't heard the track yet, but I'm looking forward to it. On November 30th, the Sunday Times carried an article on the Diana tribute - the excerpt below briefly mentions Ferry. - ---- Singing Together for the Princess, by Rachel Cooke. Picture this: in the offices of Richard Branson's V2 label, a compilation album is being put together. The idea is that it will feature some of the biggest artists in the world, and raise at least 50 million pounds for charity. A list is drawn up of those to be approached but even before their numbers can be dialled, the phone rings red hot with calls from *very famous* pop stars, all of whom are desperate to lend a hand. Some of these artists are so keen that they take the trouble to send in demo tapes, just like they did when they first began their careers. Even Bryan Ferry, the king of cool, dispatches one. This may sound like an unlikely scenario, but it also happens to be true. The death of Diana, Princess of Wales, has galvanised the music industry like no other event before it, paling even Bob Geldof's efforts by comparison. Tomorrow, a tribute double album celebrating Diana's life and work goes on sale. Put together in just a little over three weeks, it features 36 tracks, including 13 completely new recordings by artists such as Michael Jackson, George Michael, Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart, Simply Red, the Spice Girls, the Bee Gees, Diana Ross, and Eric Clapton. Even Barbara Streisand, who has never before donated a track to a compilation album, has coughed up. Bryan Ferry will also be pleased to hear that his recording of Shakespeare's sonnet No 18, with full orchestra, puts in an appearance on album one. Diana's sister Sarah helped choose the cover - - a photograph by Mario Testino of Diana wearing a beaded Catherine Walker gown - and to write the sleeve notes. After the princess's death, several record companies indicated that they intended to release albums in her memory; however, the trustees of the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund decided that they would prefer one single musical project, a decision the 6 major record companies unanimously respected. The man largely responsible for organising this logistic nightmare was Steve Abbott, a producer at V2 and the recipient of no less than 1,200 demo tapes. "When it came to choosing what went on the album, it was all down to the music," says Abbott, who survived on only two and a half hours' sleep a night during the time it took to put the album together. "We want the record to be a classic of its time, to capture the mood of the nation just after Diana's death. That's why it's not exactly what you'd call upbeat. I'd like it to be what Street Fightin' Man by the Rolling Stones was to Vietnam." - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V2 #55 *************************** ======================================================================== Please send any questions or comments about the list to avalon-digest-owner@smoe.org
