Mark's tour kicked off last Saturday with much support from the hometown crowd. Skylight Books in Los Feliz had set up about 30 chairs, but easily over twice that many people crowded into the limited space to hear and see Mark. He read five passages from the book, and took Q&A afterward. They were not my favorite passages, as I don't feel most of them illustrated the really beautiful, stunning prose that is in the book, but what he did read still captivated the crowd and led to many many book sales, and a good two hours of signing books. Spotted in the crowd were Toby, Danny Elfman, Libbie Schrader of Think of England, Angie and her twin boys, Peyote Cody, Alexis from the (||) Audio Project, and of course Poe and her website crew of Johnny and Trigger. I have to admit, I wasn't 100% convinced it was really her when I first saw her, cuz her nails were just white, no funky colors. ;) I'm sure she's probably painted some crazy stuff on them by now. As Mark signed, Poe greeted friends and fans, and Trigger filmed some sound bites for realpoe.com. Finally a chance to chat with Poe to find out how she's doing. She has taken the situation as she always has when she's had difficulty: studied the hell out of it, figured out why it is the way it is and how it works, and used the knowledge to her benefit. She's learned a lot about the business side to music, and she says it's really going to help her with decision making, and who she will want to work with so she can have the best for her music. However, as important as that was for her, it took a long time away from actually making music! and of course she is happy to be jumping back into it. That said, she is still really going to need the help from us, way more than ever. And throughout this whole thing, fans have been helping her, somtimes in strange, unexpected places and ways. She lucked out with her vocal chord surgery, as insurance paid for a whole ton of it, but it was still a fan that helped seal the deal with the surgeon. Fans helped straighten out the MySpace thing. All that stuff was a reminder of how Poe, and all of us, have to remember not to take the support for granted, and how connected we are to each other. As for the music itself, as we've been told already, we don't know when she'll be able to put something out. Haunted should hopefully get back on iTunes soon. I guess Sheridan's parent label, Artemis, got bought out by V2. While this might have caused yet a new set of problems, Poe thinks that the label is willing to be supportive. Hopefully that works out so that Hello and Haunted at least have a good home. So keep spreading the word about those albums, buy some copies for Christmas, all that good stuff. I asked Poe what she's listening to right now. She got stuck on that Mogwai album again, and listened to Le Tigre for a while. She's been listening to 60s classics, Billie Holliday, Jimi Hendrix, and Velvet Underground's Nico. Also, a band called Gram Rabbit, which I had heard about from AngryTerry's Concrete Blonde touring buddy. Very very strange that Poe knew of them too...but then again at the same time, not so strange at all. You hear how Los Angeles can be so competetive, but in music at least I've seen so much support and a real community, so I can't be so surprised if word about a band gets around. We managed to pry the page number Poe is on from Mark so she could sign it, but in doing so I think I've used up all my free passes for the whole book tour. She didn't know her name was in it! Mark is ready for the book tour now that he's gotten his first reading done. Please see him on the tour if you can. Apparently the book sold well, locally at least, for the first week. Poe helped us out a bit by saying the historical sidebar is more there for reference to help you figure out what time you are in the story. She said that you don't have to be anal and read the whole thing. I think you can figure out my response ;) Poe asked where my fish was. LOL ::) I had put the trout in storage and couldn't find it the night before. I will try to find it for the San Francisco Bay Area readings. I have some Poe stuff to pass out that is with the trout... Angie's kids had grown at least a foot, if not a foot and a half, since the last time we saw them. It was unreal, and I don't know where all the time has gone. Angie took a vacation to Thailand and went snorkeling. Her passport picture is hot, of course. She's working now, but with the kids older, she actually has more personal time to herself, and also time to help out Poe more. And speaking of helping, Trigger is really really nice. Please give him a chance first, and don't go all psycho on him right off the bat as we love to do ;) I think he might be a little more straightforward to deal with. I was disappointed when Poe handed off the personal contact duties to him, but when I saw how many MySpace comments she gets in a day, and add those to how many messages she must get, IMO she really does need someone to help her out with that. Poe is not confirmed to go to any other readings yet. Hope she's back soon. My apologies to all the PsYcHoS that I did not get to talk to as much as I would have liked. I was running around trying to find Toby so he could sign my copy of Haunted. Then I saw Cody and tried to chase him, big mistake! I had forgotten that he is very shy, fortunately he got away before I was able to mob him. There will be other events someday, so we'll see you around... Please check out our tour blog for a clip from Poe about the book: http://onlyrevolutions.blogspot.com/ We will allso be posting more about Mark's readings on the houseofleaves.com forum. - --Michele ------------------------------ End of angry-psychos-digest V11 #55 ***********************************
