A lot of viruses forge the "from" address on the messages they send out. Then the "from" address gets the bounce message when it's kicked back. - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, January 28, 2004 4:13 AM Subject: dave@poe.org has been hacked... > > And is currently sending out viruses. Send an e-mail to jarrod@poe.org to have him disable/remove your forwarding address. Someone kept sending me viruses to my poe.org address, so I had it stopped. I may reactivate it in a few months. - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, January 28, 2004 3:13 AM Subject: dave@poe.org has been hacked... > > And is currently sending out viruses. This is from a friend of mine who specializes in internet security, maybe this has something to do with this, maybe not, but its a good heads up anyway. ~D Hi Folks, You may have heard about a new virus/worm that's going around by now. It's called Novarg or Mydoom and is spreading pretty widely. This one infects your computer by way of an email attachment being opened, with the attachments being a zip file (something.ZIP), a screen saver (something.SCR), and others (.bat, .cmd, .exe, .pif). Once a computer is infected, it then sends itself via email to people it finds in address books or other local files. It can also hide who it's from by substituting these or similar email addresses in the 'From' field. (This is why you may be getting bounce-back messages from people you never sent mail to - if someone who has your email address somewhere on their computer has been infected.) This is one of those 'blended threat' types that does several things. The worm sets up a backdoor on infected computers, allowing an attacker the possibility to connect to the computer remotely. It can also download and execute files on its own, as well as participating in a Denial-of-Service attack scheduled for Feb 1. Here's a link to a writeup on Novarg by Symantec (Norton): http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.novarg.a@mm.html They also have a special removal tool that you can download, along with instructions. http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.novarg.a@mm.removal.tool.html And here's a brief description from McAfee: http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=helpCenter&hcName=mydoom&cid=9547 > > Send an e-mail to jarrod@poe.org to have him disable/remove your forwarding > address. Chances are it's a virus/worm email with faked headers and not really sending out viruses.. I've received a couple of emails like this, and I only use webbased email/Evolution (in linux)/Sidekick to access my email, none of which has a virus. > > I have disabled it... > > It is a relay, not a physical account. > > Regardless, it has been deactivated. > > *** > If anybody else is having this problem, please let me know. > > > Jarrod > poe.org admin > > On Wed, 28 Jan 2004 Davey08@aol.com wrote: > >> >> And is currently sending out viruses.
