I sent a bunch of emails off to my friends and then as I woke up more, I realized that it was all just a joke. I was really disappointed because I miss p+E!!!! I just wish that she would release MORE than two songs. She also desperately NEEDS to go back on tour and talk to the Psychos HERE. She had a bunch of dM fans who became p+E fans. She built up a really nice fanbase just with us. She added to her Psychos and all was groovy. Then, the mess with Atlantic came. We rarely hear from her. It's just all very disheartening to go yet another day with NO communication and NO word on an album or a tour. I have seen all of my favorite bands and singers this year in concert, *except* for p+E. It's really frustrating. That means that every dime she makes is from making music. Tours and Albums both COST MONEY! Sure they profit, but you've gotta have the cash to fork over to get them started. Since when is making money sleazy? Besides, I seriously doubt that we're all gonna stop getting to meet her after shows just because we don't have a pass. I think it was a bloody brilliant idea. What better item for a psycho than the certainty that you'll get to meet your goddess every time she does a show? So don't expect to see anything new, or even old, released until this is resolved. Last we heard Poe was in talks with another label, and by her own words 'freedom is near", so all we can do is wait. Let's all be patient, we all hope it won't take another 5 years for another album, but if it does, it'll be that much sweeter when it arrives. I for one am willing to wait as long as it takes, as perfection takes time (and some insanity ;)) As for the auctioning off of Poe memorabilia, I think it's great, and I'm sure she's doing it for us, her fans, not necessarily the almighty dollar. Wouldn't we all want a piece of Poe history, there were some real gems in there. The lifetime passes are cool, but look what else they are, they are backstage passes from her first tour, so even if you never use them to get backstage, they would look great in a display case. Also that Poe Box, featuring the picture that inspired the cover of Hello, was killer, [congrats to SirKyl on winning that one (I assume he got it) I would have loved to fight for that one if I had the cash. Having recently bought a house, I find myself short on money for anything else] Let's also remember that Poe is a musician, and derives her income from that. So I think these auctions are a great vehicle for her to earn some money to support herself. The proceeds from the auctions would go directly to her, and not be divided up in the record company, leaving her with only a small fraction. Finally a few comments on Angie, AKA RealProTool. Like it or not, she is Poe's appointed figurehead, and all we did was tear her apart when she joined us. We can't blame her for not participating on this list anymore, for what happened here last year. Perhaps if we were more welcoming then, we would have more news now. All I can say is that any dealings I have had with Angie have been truely pleasant ones, and I think she deserves more respect form the members of this list. It would have been great to have one of our own to have been given that position, but Poe for her own reasons, for better or worse, chose Angie. Now there was some confusion when she started, as to her relationship with Poe, Poe said one thing and Angie said another, and we all got upset trying to figure out the truth. The truth is that it doesn't matter! I say we all move on, and make this list the great thing it once was again. We are all Poe fans here, including Angie. just my 2" worth I leave you with a quote from Poe's last post to this list, hopefully to renew all your hopes and wishes "Well it's been a while now, and I am passionately moved to see all you old schoolers (and new) popping up on this list. Nope, just selling a pass to see her IF she tours again, we don't know what she is going to do. Am I wrong in remembering her telling APs they were always welcome to hang with her? If we are (or were) always welcome, and she did think of us as family, then what's the deal with this? The lack of communication doesn't help this issue. And you are right, she is a professional musician. That's why I give her my cash for albums and tours. But now, she isn't selling music - she is selling herself, or rather access to herself. And I'm sorry but the last profession I've heard of where women make money for selling access to themselves isn't a musician. I buy her cds and go to her concerts for her music. I drag people with me to those shows, and make people to listen to her cds in my car because of who she is. I promote her because I want to see her succeed and I believed that she cared about the efforts of myself and the APs to help her career. This backstage auction tells me she might care about what I do, but she still doesn't want to meet me. Unless I want to fork over thousands for the privilege. Maybe that's not how it was meant, but there has been no communication from her or her people to indicate anything else. See You! What happens every time anything significantly Poe goes up on Ebay? The board lights up with encouragement and hopes that one of the Psycho family will be the winners of the item. Who gets our money then? Sometimes fans, but much more often it is blood sucking memorabilia brokers who could not care less about Poe. What is being offered in the auctions are authentic, one of a kind Poe items and, if we are to believe all we are told, the money goes directly to Poe! I have a feeling the bidding would go WILD had she offered such a pass on Ebay, but she chose a semiprivate auction open primarily to her fans. I suggest she would have gotten more then 2K had she offered it to the memoribilia mongers on Ebay. Some here are calling that a sell out, I think not! I don't think the REAL issue is the auction though. My concerns are different. My concern remains the distance Poe has put between herself and her fans. Between herself and EVERYONE, truth be known! There was a concern here that she has only posted here once in recent years, but that post was only a few weeks ago, I hope we don't make her feel unwelcome to come back now that she has finally surfaced! Might I point out that she has not posted on her OWN site since October of 2001! It is also of interest to note that she was responding to a thread so we know that she at least occasionally is still keeping track of US by reading the list. That she acknowledged the work Jarrod has done thru the years brought a HUGE smile to many of us, I am sure. During the pre-Haunted Poe shows she spoke often of her desire to gift long time APs who have hung with her thru the years with lifetime passes that would be laminates very much like the ones she is auctioning. She even commissioned Mike Vaughn, a Portland AP, to design the pass. He and his company put considerable work into the design. Poe accepted one of the designs at the Portland Depeche Mode show. There is nothing to say that her intent has changed, but she would have, ( by practical necessity), had a cut off date of those who were on the AP list prior to July of 2001 ( other dates were mentioned, but that was the last I was given by Poe.) This auction gives some of her new fans an opportunity to get to know Poe in a way that many of we Psychos seem to have taken for granted - --- with Poe's active encouragement. The REAL frustration, in my opinion, is the lack of communication from an artist who's very artistic theme IS communication! I love Poe as a person and an artist, but any suggestion that the lack of touch is due to contractual issues is just not the case. It saddens me that she would use that as an excuse. Poe's "recording contract" with Atlantic was over LONG ago, she has a current contract that is in force for three more CDs. It is HER choice not to be recording TODAY! She has her reasons as to why she is making that choice and I doubt anyone but she and Johnny know what those reasons are...but that is a decision for her alone to make. There are some good reasons to be optimistic. The distribution rights to her already published music are still held by Atlantic but that contract expires in a few weeks and they may release it as early as next month. This is a different contract then a recording contract, she can make any NEW music she wants ( i.e. Conjure One) under her current label, but her already published music, while owned by her current label, can only be distributed by Atlantic. There has been talk by her current label of remastering Hello, maybe even putting some different mixes on the disc as well as putting a new marketing push in for Haunted maybe even some live material and singles. There is talk of a fall tour with a band, rumors ONLY must be stressed hear, but rumors from knowledgeable sources. And Poe herself has said she has many songs in various stages of readiness since before Haunted was released. Bottom line is that Poe's future is in Poe's hands. She can release a new CD anytime she wants to. She has offers for tour money on the table. She knows that she will have our support when she DOES choose to go public again, but I think right now she needs our encouragement more then ever! I believe STRONGLY that this is a time that Poe needs US. I know that some of the things that I have said are at odds with what Poe has said in her recent post. I cannot explain why Poe is choosing to be silent, I still maintain the hope that she just wanted time to be with Johnny and be a Mom for a while ( to stop any rumors before they start I am thinking of Henry, Johnny's son - I am not suggesting a new baby, though Poe has made no secret that she would like to be REALMom.) I can tell you, without going into details, that it is NOT just the APs she has been hiding from, we have actually heard more directly from Poe then EITHER her current record label or her own site! That being said, it has only been a few weeks since we received a (IMHO) very sweet, and most welcome message from her and here is to hoping that it will not be the last. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jul 2003 13:58:31 EDT From: StphLadd@aol.com Subject: Re:Poe Auctions I am on the digest of this list and was forwarded some interesting emails. I for one am GLAD that we are FINALLY talking about Poe. I am sick to death of non poe emails. Miki, the reason people are bitching about *this* auction is because poe is *not* touring. There is *no* word on an album. There is *no* word from her. There is *nothing*. I don't even know *if* she will tour again. It's not like she has said that she would tour. I hardly call benefits a tour. Why is she selling this kind of access when she used to take time to talk to Psychos after a show for *free*? Why is she selling it now??? If she is starving, then get a day time job. I don't buy that whole starving artist argument. She doesn't have a day job because I asked her. She has a sponsor, so clearly, she isn't starving on the streets of Hollywood. I have a problem with Duran Duran as well selling access at high prices. THAT is what bothers me the absolute *most*. It means that only the ones with the most money are entitled to hang out with the artist. The one with the most money wins. That is really sad because who the hell has thousands of dollars lying around? This is what we are talking about. It's not about an auction for shirts, shoes, boxes and what have you. It's the whole whoever pays the most money gets to see her for a lifetime. We h can't blame her for not participating on this list h anymore, for what happened here last year. Perhaps if h we were more welcoming then, we would have more h news now. All I can say is that any dealings I have had h with Angie have been truely pleasant ones, and I think h she deserves more respect form the members of this h list. It would have been great to have one of our own to h have been given that position, but Poe for her own h reasons, for better or worse, chose Angie. Now there h was some confusion when she started, as to her h relationship with Poe, Poe said one thing and Angie h said another, and we all got upset trying to figure out h the truth. The truth is that it doesn't matter! I say we h all move on, and make this list the great thing it once h was again. We are all Poe fans here, including Angie. Well stated, as usual, Mark! Thank you for this post... I have been one of, if not THE biggest, critic of Angie. All of the direct contacts that I had had with her had all been pleasant ones as well. The issues that developed with her seem to be all resolved. What has happened in the past is the past and I have seen NO reason to be critical of Angie in more then a year. She can only report what she is given to report. I also hope that this list will remain a positive experience for ALL Poe fans, and I agree that it does include Protools. None of us know what she has had to work with from her end either. It has been noted in the past that Poe has been leader among artists who are fans OF their fans ... let's hope she always feels welcome and happy to be here with us regardless of how often she posts. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jul 2003 13:42:53 -0500 From: "Megan Denny" Subject: re: poe auctions This is ridiculous and you all should be ashamed of yourself. I did not see the pass myself, but if it was even considerable as Poe memorabilia I would have coughed up some money without haste. Whatever crazy amount it went for, merely defines how big of a Poe fan that person was, not the avarice of Poe. Do you really think she was out to get thousands of dollars, and would not be satisfied if it went for $20??? Every naysayer is taking their fan relationship with Poe for granted. You should be elated with the fact that you are not only lucky enough to have her music as a part of your life, but your extreme fortune if you've spent even a moment of your life in her presence. How many musician's offer such a gift to their fans??? You're taking it too far to assume that since you've even fucking met her that you have a say in her life. Are we in High School still? They are from Tom Petty's latest CD - The Last DJ, it is a theme CD about the corporate state of music today --- this has NOTHING to do with Poe ( I hope) - - hence the NPR. Money Becomes King - Tom Petty - The Last DJ "If you reach back in your memory A little bell might ring 'Bout a time that once existed When money wasn't king If you stretch your imagination I'll tell you all a tale About a time when everything Wasn't up for sale There was this cat named Johnny Who loved to play and sing When money wasn't king We'd all get so excited when John would give a show We'd raise the cash between us And down the road we'd go To hear him play that music It spoke right to my soul Every verse a diamond Every chorus gold The sound was my salvation It was only everything Before money became king Well I ain't sure how it happened And I don't know exactly when But everything got bigger And the rules began to bend And the TV taught the people How to get their hair to shine And how sweet life can be If you keep a tight behind And they raised the cost of living And how could we have known They'd double the price of tickets To go see Johnny's show So we hocked all our possessions And we sold a little dope And went off to rock and roll We arrived there early In time to see rehearsal And John came out and lip-synched His new lite beer commercial And as the crowd arrived As far as I could see The faces were all different There was no one there like me They sat in golden circles And waiters served them wine And talked through all the music And paid to John paid little mind And way up in the nosebleeds We watched him on the screen They'd hung between the billboards So cheaper seats could see Johnny rock that golden circle An all those VIP's And that music that had freed us Became a tired routine And I saw his face in close-up Trying to give it all he had And sometimes his eyes betrayed him You could see that he was sad And I tried to rock on with him But I slowly became bored Could that man on stage With everything Somehow need some more? There was no use in pretending No magic left to hear All the music gave me Was a craving for lite beer As I walked out of the arena My ears began to ring And money became king" I gotta add the lyrics to two other songs on the same CD, thinking of some of the recent posts about non-musician musicians .... some say this song is about Brittny, Tom has never said who he had in mind .... Joe My name's Joe, I'm the CEO Yeah, I'm the man makes the big wheels roll I'm the hand on the green light switch You get to famous I get to be rich Go get me a kid with a good-looking face Bring me a kid can remember his place Some hungry poet son of a bitch He gets to be famous I get to be rich Or bring me a girl theybre always the best You put bem on stage and have bem undress Some angel whore who can learn a guitar lick Hey, now thatbs what I call music Yeah theybll come looking for money when the public gets bored I will fight bem with lawyers they could never afford Yeah Ibll make her look like a spoiled little bitch She gets to be famous I get to be rich Or bring me a girl theybre always the best You put bem on stage and have bem undress Some angel whore who can learn a guitar lick Hey, now thatbs what I call music So burned out Johnny thinks the books are shifty What goodbs that alkie to me when hebs fifty Well we could move catalog if hebd only die quicker Send my regards to the gig and a case of good liquor He gets to be famous I get to be rich He gets to be famous I get to be rich My namebs Joe. Ibm the ceo Ibm the man makes the big wheels roll. FInally he talks about the state of airplay on the radio these days in the title cut, The Last DJ .... Well you canbt turn him into a company man You canbt turn him into a whore And the boys upstairs just donbt understand anymore Well the top brass donbt like him talking so much And he wonbt play what they say to play And he donbt want to change what donbt need to change And there goes the last DJ Who plays what he wants to play And says what he wants to say Hey, hey, hey And there goes your freedom of choice There goes the last human voice There goes the last DJ Well some folks say theybre gonna hang him so high Because you just canbt do what he did Therebs some things you just canbt put in the minds of those kids As we celebrate mediocrity all the boys upstairs want to see How much youbll pay for what you used to get for free And there goes the last DJ Who plays what he wants to play And says what he wants to say Hey, hey, hey And there goes your freedom of choice There goes the last human voice And there goes the last DJ (Instrumental break) Well he got him a station down in Mexico And sometimes it will kinda come in And Ibll bust a move and remember how it was back then There goes the last DJ Who plays what he wants to play And says what he wants to say Hey, hey, hey And there goes your freedom of choice There goes the last human voice And there goes the last DJ Any of this sound familiar? So sad.... ------------------------------ End of angry-psychos-digest V8 #149 ***********************************
