What do you have to say about what you were trying to get across with that video? POE: Let me get back there in my brain. Well, basically, that video... there is no question that it wasnt executed the way I would have liked. We had a whole different premise for that video, which was the thing my brother and I came up with. The thing was taking place in a showroom with cars and you dont know that until the very end, but in the end I sort of get out of the car and Im in my overalls with my bookbag, and its all just a fantasy of this car as sexual object, not me. It really made a lot more sense, and then you could venture into this total sexpot area and have a bit of a wink at the end of it, which made more sense to me. And we kind of, as usual, got fucked, because there was not enough money and at the end of the day the guy says we cant shoot those scenes. So we had a one day shoot and I was pretty livid. On the other hand, there was definitely something in me... I knew that there would be dissonant reactions to that video, and I just have never understood why, as a woman... I always had this sense, even growing up. Either you are this kind of smart girl that is respected, and even in music you have these stereotypes. You had the smart person whose music had a certain amount of depth but they werent allowed to be overtly sexual. Suzanne Vega and Tracy Chapman. Even go back to the 60s, Joan Baez, etc. And then you have your pop stars who usually dont write their own material and usually dont really have anything to say on their own and its all about sex. For me, there are all these elements in every human being, let alone a woman. We all have different sets of powers. Were all sexual, we all have our brains, we have our bodies, we have our philosophical self, we have our poetic self, our funny self. Thats all of it. And why is it that when you express one of those things the rest of it is sort of left out in the cold? And it even works the other way, when somebody expresses themselves in an extremely sexual way and if they try to go further than that theyre kind of laughed at. Ah! This person has no brain. There are few people who have crossed those things. To some degree Madonna has done it, but more because shes such an incredible business woman and her taste is so exquisite. But in an intellectual way she really hasnt done that either. And I thought it was interesting because everyone sort of thought of me as more of this academic rebel, and I thought why the hell shouldnt I be able to dance around a car and express sexual fantasy and then also be able to sing a song like If You Were Here or Spanish Doll? It seems sad, because in life you are all those things. And I, quite frankly between you and me, enjoyed all the descent. I really did. I was like no, this is good. Because any time you upset somebodys preconceptions you are making them think. Theyre going whoa! POEs not supposed to do that! BRAD: And also, the character in the video fits your character in the song. POE: Oh, exactly! BRAD: More than with Spanish Doll. If that were the video for Spanish Doll it would be a very different thing than for Hey Pretty. POE: Yeah! Exactly, I mean, that whole song is absolutely about that. Its inviting someone into your world in a very intimate, sexual way. It also, in a strange way, for me really was a journey towards intimacy. And usually intimacy begins with a sexual connection. Do you know what I mean? Even some of the more complicated things that happen. Youre attracted to someone, you fall in love with them, you get into a relationship, then all shit breaks loose. Every fear youve ever had starts coming to the surface. Every insecurity. Usually that stuff is not stemming from the relationship, but everything that came before. For me thats where you start to go and analyze your very first bond, which, you know, one extremely important one for me was my father. For most people its our parents. Until you really understand how those voices function in your head its really difficult to find your own voice. Also, to know the difference in a relationship between whats your shit and whats the other persons shit. Where youre all of a sudden insecure, and the truth is that person isnt making you insecure at all. Youre really seeing your father, or your mother, I dont know. The record went to those places and it sort of... the mud was really meant to be like if youre going to come into my world in this way then expect to get a little dirty. Its not going to be all smooth sailing. But the thing is, it was shot like such a fashion ad. I dont know if that really communicated so much. My only sadness about it was that it didnt have this little cap at the end of it, which I thought would have been so hilarious. We were going to have my brother come out as a security guard and kick me out of the car, which would have been so much closer to the truth in terms of who I am, even. For a minute you see yourself as this, like, yeah! I am the diva pop star! and then youre like okay, Im getting kicked out of the car at the auto show. But anyway, thats that. ===== Visit EVERYTHING'S FINE!
