AND that mofo KATHY told my friend who'd gotten hired at that CHEAP ass company for $7 an hour that i couldn't work any extra hours b/c i'm "too expensive" i get paid what i am fucking worth and today i just got hired by one of the agents i used to work with for even more than what coldwell banker pays me ... i really want to report Cendant to the stock market because what does it say about a company who can't afford to pay me to work 4 extra hours (while making the 15 year old work so they can save 20 bucks) . i have a HOT stock tip here. anyway..this mistreatment earned my lovely job an "i quit, someone else can afford to pay me more and you guys can save some pennies" at the beginning of my shift >:-)..... anyway...the point of this email was to say that i believe purplemojo completely... didn't you say you live an apartment? that makes her physical phone line all that easier to access. also i believe that you can make calls from phone boxes near the residence which does require a bit of phreaker knowledge but i'm sure it happens a lot. the fact that the line is used for the computer was to point out that the calls were not made by accident, guest, etc. purplemojo you can b---me out if you feel i am mis representing you but i know scams like this happen all the time. its good readers digest material. anyway.... :) Shari ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 02:03:55 EDT From: PURPLMOJO@aol.com Subject: Re: angry-psychos-digest V7 #208 In a message dated 7/28/2002 9:39:40 PM Alaskan Daylight Time, Krod Knid writes: > The trick was that the website had a little box for you to check...but it > didn't matter whether you checked it or not, since if you clicked to close > it, it would take that as a yes...and then it just connected to the 900# > from the computer using the line that was already open (webpages are loaded > onto your hard drive, in case you didn't already know...this is how that > damned JPilot virus gets in there and causes Internet Explorer to open link > after link after link). I mentioned originaly how those programs would pop up and if you did not read fine print it downloads the dialing program to your computer. I had one do the same thing. I found the program in my system one day goign through files.. Good thing I had a 900 block on my line. I'm sure it probably tried as i do have a phone plugged into my comp ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 02:16:58 EDT From: LivTheMdns@aol.com Subject: Re: angry-psychos-digest V7 #208 If I remember right, there was a porn site that claimed to be entirely free, all you'd have to do is download their special viewer. This special viewer was nothing special as far as viewers go, but it's primary function was to first turn off the modem speaker (so that a user couldn't hear a number being dialed on it) and then dial a phone number somewhere in moldovia. Many people were taken by this one. That being said, it also isn't hard to modify phone equipment so that you don't need to actually hook it into a modular jack (I did this once when a contact in my only phone jack broke and I would have been without a phone until the company came to repair it). The only things it takes to call a 900 number from outside someone's house is a phone you don't need, some wire cutters, a pair of alligator clips and a willingness to break a few laws. Don't believe me? I've seen linemen do the same thing at my house in VA when the phones went dead using what amounts to the same device. Were you home at the time of the calls? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 02:17:51 EDT From: PURPLMOJO@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR: the phony phone calls & etc In a message dated 7/28/2002 9:52:27 PM Alaskan Daylight Time, Sharonda220@aol.com writes: > anyway...the point of this email was to say that i believe purplemojo > completely... didn't you say you live an apartment? that makes her physical > > phone line all that easier to access. also i believe that you can make > calls > from phone boxes near the residence which does require a bit of phreaker > knowledge but i'm sure it happens a lot. the fact that the line is used for > > the computer was to point out that the calls were not made by accident, > guest, etc. purplemojo you can b---me out if you feel i am mis representing > > you but i know scams like this happen all the time. its good readers digest > > material. anyway.... :) Shari Actually depends on the apartments. Some apartments have the box where dialtone is delivered to in a secured room. Any decent apartment complex does.. Condo's and houses are easiest. Condo's and apartments are little harder to tap into. Houses are easy.. Course i'm talking from knowledge of the equipment used in my area, but if you know what your doing, just like cable service you can tap into someone elses service.. Best way to protect yourself in any scenerio is put international and 900 and collect/third party blocks on your line. Which if you don't use those services it will save you problems in the future.. In my area phone company don't charge for these blocks so better to be safe than sorry later I always say.. P.S. Congradulations on your new job Shari .. I hope it's a company that you'll be happy to work for, cause no matter what a company pays if you don't enjoy being there it's not worth it.. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 02:27:55 EDT From: PURPLMOJO@aol.com Subject: Re: angry-psychos-digest V7 #208 In a message dated 7/28/2002 10:17:53 PM Alaskan Daylight Time, LivTheMdns@aol.com writes: > If I remember right, there was a porn site that claimed to be entirely free, > > all you'd have to do is download their special viewer Yeah those are still around. They are the sites that say no credit card needed.. They give you option to download the viewer and unless you read the terms/agreement or fine print you don't know that it will disconnect you from the internet and dial a 900 number.. Guess I should also point out that 900 numbers are not just adult sex lines. they range from tech support TO trivia or information services.. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 02:32:35 -0400 From: jak at ircii dot org Subject: phone thread I don't really have anything to say to this thread except that I've NEVER come across a website that has been able to install a dialling program, hang up, and dial another number _without user intervention_. Don't have any answers to the computer questions, but I know now that I have Zone Alarm, I feel much safer about using my computer. It blocks port scans, routed packets, etc. Very cool. Had to do something seeing as how someone put either a trojan horse or a worm into my computer and was using my e-mail address to send out porn mail. Talk about pissed off!!! AOL shut down my account; had to get that all straightened out before I was even able to log back on and see what they were talking about. Zone Alarm is available on MSN, for those of you who want to know. If you get the Pro version, it will map out IP addresses on the computers who try to get into yours. Pretty cool. Well, that's enough of that. Gonna go play around a bit. Later!! Jpilot Virus? Never heard of it, just checked the web, no such record. Can you point to documentaion on this "Jpilot virus" ? I have been a Jpilot user for more than a few years now, and just checked the http://www.jpilot.com web site and there is no record of virus issues. I know of many Java scripts that can be employed to produce the effect you speak of, but not via Jpilot. Also, if there is anybody on this list that actualy has a working knowledge of making 900 calls from a connected phone, other than what they think is possible please step forward. I know I have heard that it is possible to do. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 17:49:41 EDT From: KrodKnid@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR Jpilot Virus? 900#'s Re: angry-psychos-digest V7 #208 In a message dated 7/29/2002 2:49:25 PM Eastern Daylight Time, usscvn65@frontiernet.net writes: > Jpilot Virus? There are several variations. You can read about it here: McAfee.com - Virus Information Library http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=98882 There are fixes for it...also you can download the latest version of Microsoft VML (or the VML vulnerability patch) to block further infestations. What JS/Seeker does is alter the way IE opens, so that it will open multiple links when you get to certain sites (usually porno or warez links) and keep opening more as you try to close the many that are already open. If you have surfed the "warez" undernet at all you have undoubtedly encountered JS/Se3eker. A nifty program that counters pop-ups and multiple URL openings is "CloseIEx". It is freeware. It allows you to close all instances of IE with a single click or, alternately, all instances except for the one that is currently on top. It integrates into the IE taskbar...very handy. You can get it here: CloseIEx http://geocities.com/closeiex/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 19:20:40 -0700 (PDT) From: PoePunkPrincess Subject: Re: NPR: Reiki A bit, what do you want to know?
